lamnk··on iFixit iPhone Air teardown
The iPhone 13 mini is a cute little device, I really like it, but its battery life is so abysmal — can not last even a half day.
lamnk··on Tell HN: I just updated my wife's Chrome, and uBlock is no longer supported
yes I switched from Chrome to FF for this exact reason but my oh my is FF so slow and laggy!
lamnk··on Twenty: A Modern open-source CRM
Based on my experience, one of the most challenging aspects of CRM is having sales agents manually enter customer data and log activities such as calls and emails, especially when dealing with messaging across different platforms. While many SaaS and open-source CRM systems offer basic contact, lead, and opportunity management features, they often lack comprehensive solutions for these issues.
lamnk··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
Wow, I wasn't aware of this. With such amount of money raised, I would expect a more polished app/frontend. Their core open-source product as a password manager is solid, but the UX/UI could definitely use some improvement.
lamnk··on Doing laundry on campus without a phone
Reading the original article, I must mention the recent LG OLED TV, which required me to create an account to install an app from their app store.
lamnk··on Little Snitch Mini
yes, the price is cheap, but the number subscriptions and the total sum of them add up very quickly.
lamnk··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
> In some cities, especially in the north they are nearly the majority of vehicles on the road.

lol, do you really live in Vietnam?

How many electric scooters do you see on the street in compare to the gasoline counterparts? Honda alone deliver about 2.7 million bikes per year in Vietnam. All of the Honda bikes are ICE. The number of new electric scooters is not even six figures.

> Toyota will never be very popular in Vietnam.

Recently Toyota is not as popular as some years ago. But they still ship the most passenger cars among other manufacturers last year.

lamnk··on Myths about construction
Yes, it is for SEO purposes and to build your own branding presence, and to be less dependant of other major platforms, in this case Youtube.

1. He probably already wrote a script for his video before production. 2. Speech-to-text is quite good and cheap nowadays. So, why not?

lamnk··on Yahoo Japan's password-free authentication reduced inquiries, sped up sign-in
Fido auth may be ok but please, stop the "magic link" or SMS authentication.

Even with very fast delivery, having to switch email or SMS still take time and interrupt the signin process. We all know how costly it is to switch context.

lamnk··on Simple Raspberry Pi Powered SMS Gateway
Sure, they will throttle or suspend your SIM if you send out an abnormal number of SMSs to prevent spam.
lamnk··on Vercel raises $150M Series D
Coca-Cola, Nike ... are some magnitudes different in brand recognition. They can afford to do that. I find it quite frustating when I'm on some startups' websites and after 1-3 clicks around I still don't know what their products or services do, lost in marketing/tech jargons. After that I just quit. Come on people, use English!
lamnk··on We saved millions in SSD costs by upgrading our filesystem
Hardware is cheaper at scale too
lamnk··on We saved millions in SSD costs by upgrading our filesystem
> Colocated systems tend to work very well at first when the original engineers who set it up are all still at the company and it hasn't run long enough to start encountering rare failure modes. They quickly become a nightmare when your engineering staff turns over multiple times and nobody can remember who knows how to do what on the colocated system or if the documentation is up to date or not.

And AWS systems do not have to face the same problem? Is it easier for a new staff to come in and modify a millions worth of AWS system than a colo system?

lamnk··on Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors
My iphone 2G from 2007 still works well into 2013-2014.
lamnk··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
Guess I'm the opposite. I hate USB-A the connector with passion. I always have to try 2-3 times to be able to plug the USB-A connector in. Now I keep only 2 USB-A chargers in my home for legacy devices and advice my wife explitcitly not to buy new gadgets with USB-A connector, be it mini or micro.
lamnk··on A bit of math around Cloudflare's R2 pricing model
Linode, Digital Ocean, OVH, Hetzner all have hourly billing.
lamnk··on A bit of math around Cloudflare's R2 pricing model
Network and bandwidth are absolutely not free but certainly not that expensive as the three major public clouds are charging: $0.1 per GB equals to $100 per 1TB transfer.

Linode, Digital Ocean and other hosting companies sell small VPSs with 4TB bandwidth for $10/month and still making profit. At places like OVH, Hetzner bandwith is virtually unlimited.

lamnk··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
I remember reading from the Epic vs Apple debacle that Apple decided to not open iMessage for Android phones since 2013:

https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/9/22375128/apple-imessage-an...

lamnk··on Spotify Box
Spotify's discovery sucks. I can never ever find a favorite song in Spotify's suggestions. The experience is very similar to Youtube's echo chamber.
lamnk··on Kape Technologies buys ExpressVPN for $936M
Windscribe is cool with generous free tier offer and simple, clean UI/UX
lamnk··on FreeBSD SSH Hardening
Yes, at work we use OpenVPN and only expose VPN, HTTP, HTTPS ports to the public.

But I find VPN a bit overkill on my personal machines.

lamnk··on FreeBSD SSH Hardening
yeah, my mistake, i meant to write copy the public key :D copying by hand is ok but ssh-copy-id is simpler. Can't edit the comment now hmmm...
lamnk··on FreeBSD SSH Hardening
The first thing i do on a new remote box is to move SSH to another non-standard port other than 22. I use the same port for every remote boxes I have. Then add that port into `.ssh/config` on local box.

Second is to disable root login.

Third is to copy my private key over and disable password login.

3 essential steps to secure SSH.

lamnk··on Mistakes I've Made in AWS
You can host your project on DO and connect to SES to send emails. Why do you have to move the complte project over?
lamnk··on Geizhals – Tech Product Price Comparison and Tracking
Could be. As far as i can tell they do not market themselves, word of mouth only work so far within their (German?) tech savvy audience. I was a student in Germany since 2003 and use Geizhals extensively for purchasing stuff, especially computer related stuff. Other price comparison engines like Idealo, Kelkoo etc. suck in compare to Geizhals.
lamnk··on The Applecare Hustle
News at 11: Apple aftersale parts are extremely expensive. Be prepared to pay for two third of a new iPhone or Macbook if their mainboards go south in the case they do not fall under Apple warranty program.
lamnk··on Toyota to spend 1.5T yen on EV battery development
I wonder what make Toyota changes their tone, because Toyota is known to be very reluctant against BEVs as they want to keep their inverstment in hybrids and continue to bet on hydrogen fuel cells.
lamnk··on MangaDex infrastructure overview
A day is 16 * 60 * 60 = 57,600 seconds (night time substracted). So tens thousands users per day is like 1-2 req/s, maybe 50 at peak time.

What is more important is what kind of requests your server has to serve. Nginx can easily serve 50-80k req/s of static content; 100ks range if tuned properly.

lamnk··on Docker Desktop no longer free for large companies
Yes, it's nothing for a single tool, even with hundreds or thousands of dev. But in total it quickly adds up for a lot of tools.
lamnk··on Facebook hacker beat my 2FA, bricked my Oculus, and hit the company credit card
It's very easy to forget to send the sms, which will then make you loose your number. The carrier will take the number back and assign it to another person.
