lambdas··on Was Y Combinator worth it?
The y combinator is used to implement recursion in a language without recursion no?

That definition is dependent on recursion already being present.

lambdas··on Super sorry to the guy with the username reset on GitHub
We had something similar. Public board that went by an acronym that was also used in gay paddling fetish.

You’d be scrolling through hashtags/mentions of us and occasionally be greeted by some young actor being coquettishly tapped on the bare bum with a cricket bat or something.

lambdas··on Geddit: Open-source, Reddit client for Android without using API
That conveniently glosses over the fact that users provide all the content for free, that these “vandals” then moderate 24/7 for free.

To say “well, I’m not going to do it if you take away my tools” is entirely fair imo.

lambdas··on Reddit CEO tells employees that subreddit blackout ‘will pass’
I don’t doubt they’ll have people lining up out the door to be mods… whether someone you picked with zero vetting because you’re in dire straits is going to be a good mod though is very doubtful.

I can see things going very sour if they choose to replace long standing mods.

lambdas··on Find out where you can afford to buy or rent in Great Britain
But those immigrants are never going to earn the necessary 5%, never mind 10% for a deposit.

That’s with an established stream of income. Without, the deposit would be almost 50% leaving the homes to be scooped not by immigrants but those with high capital.

No immigrant is buying a home. It’s banks buying them up, landlords, foreign nationals as investments.

The UK housing is a commodity worth investing with no regard to the people who need them. Something has to give.

lambdas··on Guitar Effects Guidebook, Vol. 20 [pdf]
I’d be cautious. I’ve had two friends who bought it, were let down, sold it, thought maybe they weren’t using it right, bought it again, then sold it again.

It’s opinionated granulated synthethesis; it’s a good way to get that sound but if you find yourself not liking something about the sound, tough luck tweaking it.

lambdas··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
I don’t see that as a fair equivalent - it’s a legal broadcast, it’s not obscured or private by any means. Every time that plane changes destinations it’s a legal requirement to put that information out into the open.

He just doesn’t like it, so goodbye freedom of speech.

lambdas··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
You can just save to a folder on your iOS device and push/pull changes with the app “working copy”, which is a full gift client. It costs a pretty penny though.
lambdas··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast $50K expands to hundreds of homes
Damn, this project is even hurting me in the UK then because we're also at 10%. Curse you Jared.
lambdas··on Germany is offering a summer of cheap trains
More needs to be done by the government. I was interested to learn the other day that Great British Rail will recieve the same, if not less, in subsidies. It's purely to 'streamline' buying tickets and the ticket costs will be barely effected.

It's being fronted as preventing further taxpayer costs, but I can't but feel maybe if there weren't a million private ToC's and the RoC's bleeding the railways dry this would be a non-issue.

lambdas··on Introducing the Windows Pseudo Console (ConPty)
No termcaps which ncurses depends on though so I don't think so
lambdas··on IOTA: The Brave Little Toaster That Couldn’t
Yeah it was on his domain at http://come-from-beyond.com, unfortunately since last month he's not renewed it and wayback just loads a blank page.

Shame, I'm going to see if it's available anywhere as it was a riot. Technology NASA is making him keep secret until this countdown he had going.

lambdas··on IOTA: The Brave Little Toaster That Couldn’t
Is this the same coin that has both incredibly rude developers and one that claims to have invented time travel?
lambdas··on Start Your Own ISP
Do you have a link to the scientific evidence?

I've never heard this before. Don't want to dismiss it as tin-foil paranoia without reading the data!

lambdas··on 2017 Was Bad for Facebook. 2018 Will Be Worse
Oh god no. I hide their results from google searches, that horrible wall they put up to make you sign up to read something or look at an image.
lambdas··on Non-determinism: a sublanguage rather than a monad
Sometimes two monads composed don't form another monad. Unlike Functors and Applicatives.

Simple example, if you have a list containing functions ([Reader r a]) it forms an Applicative fine as they compose. However you can't satisfy the conditions needed to form a Monad.

lambdas··on How Booking.com manipulates users
Part of being a grownup is doing whatever the hell you want. If you want to ring that phone (and have a potentially awkward conversation with some immature developer that's not yet picking up on your opportunity), do it.

Goes both ways.

lambdas··on A collection of things software developers should know
Stay humble. You don't know as much as you think you do. That's the takeaway from these IMO.

Don't think anyone can commit all of these guides to memory but a very nice reference.

lambdas··on It's Never Too Late to Learn Guitar
Tycho as in the Scott Hansen Tycho? If it is then I would like to say four years ago I listened to your music in a depressed slump, a week later I picked up the guitar and never looked back.

Either which way, that's some good advice and as a beginner it's hard to realise these things if you're self learning. Scales can feel like a practice routine rather than a palette.
