laconicmatt··on Why old games never die, but new ones do
This perfectly encapsulates the new Fatal Fury game. It's such a great new release but all the Fatal Fury old heads absolutely obliterate any new players, especially players from more popular backgrounds like Street Fighter or GG Strive.
laconicmatt··on 6502 as a Service
Very awesome. Not sure what'd I'd ever use it for anything but it's cool to know the option exists.
laconicmatt··on The Best Size of a Laptop
I was recently helping someone shop for a laptop and stumbled upon the LG gram. I was really impressed with the build quality and how light it was. I think it was a 16in though. I prefer smaller screen 13/14 but I was very tempted to get one myself.
laconicmatt··on Explaining my fast 6502 code generator (2023)
As someone who makes games for two different 6502 systems, this is a really cool read. I'm curious if I could use this in any of the toolchains I use for those platforms.
laconicmatt··on Elite on the 6502: The original 6502 assembly source, heavily commented
This just isn't true. There are plenty of very good NES games that have great game loops and are a blast to play. Some of the good ones have quirks or unintuitive controls but are still quite enjoyable.
laconicmatt··on Show HN: Browse Anime from the Terminal
This is a really cool tool. Will definitely be my go to for downloading anime and then plopping them on my Jellyfin server. May also just replace using Twitch in a browser for background noise, which usually kills resources on my dev machine.

laconicmatt··on Show HN: Obsess Jobs – Apply to jobs in your sleep
I'm not sure if you're saying this tongue-in-cheek but as someone whose looking for a job, this is a requirement already with some employers.
laconicmatt··on Generate Color Palettes from Text
Think some of the palette prompts are being censored and giving no warning. Neat tool though!
laconicmatt··on Show HN: Eonfall – A new third-person co-op action game built for the web
Congrats on the launch. Looking forward to giving this a shot.

Using firefox on android and the play button was hidden, even when I flipped my phone (zfold).

laconicmatt··on Certain names make ChatGPT grind to a halt, and we know why
You must work at a Japanese university.

Joking aside, surely those name exclusions only account for user input and not data the model is trained on.

Professionally, most of my work has been in mobile app development but I'm quite comfortable with backend and frontend web development. Outside of work I've published my own mobile apps as well as had some indie games published (C/ASM). Looking for development work in really any kind of area as long as it's interesting.

laconicmatt··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
This looks really cool, ill definitely be keeping track of it :)
laconicmatt··on Show HN: A Demo for a Strategy Game
This looks very cool. Kind of giving me total war / warhammer vibes. Wishlisted and I'll give the demo a go.

Good luck with the project.

laconicmatt··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
Without a doubt. This is the first time hearing about working in the NIL space like this but it seems so obvious. I'm surprised I haven't come across it before. Good luck!

Been doing web development as well as iOS / Android / React-Native development remotely for the past four years. I also have experience as a indie game dev who has completed and sold games. Not looking for a particular industry, just interesting problems to work on. Recently came from the sports industry and have worked in healthcare in the past.
laconicmatt··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2024)
Looks like both job postings are 404ing.
laconicmatt··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
Would you be willing to share more? That seems like a very ripe (can't think of a better word) place to be working in.
laconicmatt··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
This is a really brilliant idea. I've been learning a language recently and almost everything is either too hard or way to easy to be useful.
laconicmatt··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
I have a soft spot for obscure gaming consoles (couldnt tell you why). So, after I made my PC Engine game, I kind of landed on either Wonderswan or PCFX and the Wonderswan had a really awesome tool chain made for it recently* whereas the PCFX still has some way to go for development.

laconicmatt··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
Working on a Run N Gun for the Wonderswan Color. Starting making "retro" games about 3 years ago and have been really loving it.

After successfully completing my first game, Strife Sisters - a strategy RPG, I decided to try out a new genre. Although I'm having fun working on this style of game, part of me wishes I had stuck with the same genre since I still had a lot of ideas to work with.

laconicmatt··on NexDock turns your smartphone into a laptop
Wild that I'm seeing this on Hacker News. I just found out about the Dex capablilties of my zfold phone. I've been using it pretty much all week and have been considering going all in on this format.

I love that I can just use my phone for virtually everything I use my laptop for (developing probably being the only obsticle).

I've been considering some of the other options out there for portable monitor/keyboards and these seem (so far) the most affordable option. I wonder how the build quality it.
