lachlan-sneff··on A Meta-Layer for Notes
I'd be grateful if you could notify me when you release what you're working on. Email is in profile. Thank you :)
lachlan-sneff··on Google proposed Web Bundles could threaten the Web as we know it
> Is it "simple coincidence" that "conspiracy theories" almost always come true?

That's quite a statement to make. In no way do "conspiracy theories almost always come true."

lachlan-sneff··on A Brief Explanation of Greg Egan’s Dust Theory
I read Permutation City a year or two ago, so bear with me.

I believe they run the computation on physical computers so that the people running in the simulation can, at any point, check if their reality is a descendant of the initial garden-of-eden configuration.

lachlan-sneff··on Lesser-known Web APIs
Not really, if the user wants they can post their location, credit card number, etc online. They stand between themselves and their own exploitation. Removing apis doesn't change that.
lachlan-sneff··on Lesser-known Web APIs
It's a shame that Firefox has said they won't implement many of these. The Bluetooth and USB apis would legitimately be really useful. I'm not sure the privacy issues really matter if there's a dialog that the website is trying to use one.
lachlan-sneff··on Bevy: A Game Engine in Rust
I'm not sure OpenGL will ever be deprecated, but it's always been a pretty awful and very complex api.
lachlan-sneff··on Mind Emulation Foundation
Can you be clearer about what’s going on behind the scenes here? Additionally, are you aware of the humanityplus and ##hplusroadmap communities?
lachlan-sneff··on Nvidia Unveils GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs
3080 ($700) apparently has 238 teraflops of "tensor compute." We're frighteningly close to a petaflop of compute for less than a thousand usd.
lachlan-sneff··on Bevy: A Game Engine in Rust
The rendering backend is a work in progress. In the near term, it'll let you use several levels of rendering abstraction, down to wgpu, which is what it currently uses, and eventually vulkan as well.

At the very least, you should move to a more modern rendering api like vulkan, wgpu (though I'm biased), metal, or dx12.

lachlan-sneff··on Bevy: A Game Engine in Rust
There's going to be an editor, but these things take time.
lachlan-sneff··on Longevity FAQ: A beginner's guide to longevity research
Perhaps stagnation is due to experience, perhaps it's due to accumulated, age-related brain damage. I doubt we'll know until people do live hundreds or thousands of years.

Surely you can be a beginner again. Pick something you've never done before, and do that. As fledgling as humanity is, humans already have millions of different traditions and areas of study. Just pick one (or many).

lachlan-sneff··on Longevity FAQ: A beginner's guide to longevity research
I have no idea, I'm not a scientist, I'm just a transhumanist.
lachlan-sneff··on Longevity FAQ: A beginner's guide to longevity research
I can't say I understand this viewpoint. If you feel you're going to become an agent of stagnation, as you put it, simply put effort into not stagnating.
lachlan-sneff··on Longevity FAQ: A beginner's guide to longevity research
The whole point of this is to be able to extend your healthspan, not just your lifespan. This includes age "reversal" and maintenance. A complete solution does not leave you in your 80s, it leaves you in your 20s indefinitely.
lachlan-sneff··on Longevity FAQ: A beginner's guide to longevity research
I do want to live in a world where people can take as much time as they want! I'm 20 years old, and there already isn't enough time to do everything I want to do. I also disagree that increased longevity will lead to a stagnant society. Just as we don't expect a 30 year old to be the same person when they're aged to 40 or 50, I don't expect a 100 year old to be the same person when they're 300. Neurons are replaced, old memories are forgotten, old habits are redefined.
lachlan-sneff··on Longevity FAQ: A beginner's guide to longevity research
Never understood why so many people are so vehemently against anti-aging sentiments. Are they in denial about their own, current mortality?
lachlan-sneff··on Longevity FAQ: A beginner's guide to longevity research
Do you not want to live longer?
lachlan-sneff··on WebBundles harmful to content blocking, security tools, and the open web
WebBundles would be great for distributing applications to users as a single, well, bundle.
lachlan-sneff··on "Much" of the Rust/Wasmtime team hit by layoffs at Mozilla
Thank you for commenting here Steve. The fallout from the layoffs is possibly quite harrowing but, from my biased point of view, this may be a watershed moment for Rust. It'll have to expand beyond its incubating organization.

(And don't cut yourself short, your actions are a significant part of why Rust has such a promising future.)

lachlan-sneff··on IAM is hard – Thoughts on $80M fine from the Capital One Breach
What got breached?
lachlan-sneff··on Programming with RISC-V Vector Instructions
Whoa, that's a well designed ISA.
lachlan-sneff··on RISC-V OS using Rust: Graphics
The rust std library doesn't hide allocations at all. It's very explicit.
lachlan-sneff··on Show HN: A bookmarking tool designed to help synthesize your web research
Any chance of being able to host on my own server?
lachlan-sneff··on Ask HN: What weird or hard problems are you trying to solve?
I'm building cad software for designing atomically precise objects.

I don't expect atomically precise manufacturing (at least in the form of molecular nanotechnology) to show up for at least a decade or two.

But the software to design things that can be built using nanotech can be written before the technology to synthesize them exists.

lachlan-sneff··on Back to old tricks, or, baby steps in Rust
This is essentially the iterator trait, right?
lachlan-sneff··on Closos: Specification of a Lisp operating system (2013) [pdf]
I love thinking about ideas like this. A few years back, I wrote a kernel that ran wasm similar to how Closos would run lisp. Webassembly is perhaps a bit uninspired compared to lisp, but there are many advantages, although the system cannot be dynamic in the same way that this would be.

I'd love to see these kinds of ideas revisited.

lachlan-sneff··on In the future, lab mice will live in computer chips, not cages?
I must be quite confused then, but how is free will not linked to determinism?
lachlan-sneff··on Ask HN: What kind of ideas are not VC-backable but should exist in the future?
Moore's law isn't dead yet, we've got quite a ways to go. There are feasible paths to 1cm³ processors with billions of cores and enough processing power to host thousands of humans minds.
lachlan-sneff··on An overview of V8
Err, what?
lachlan-sneff··on Google Acquires North
I think this is a pretty solid acquisition by google. I have doubts that the tech from North will be able to match the tech in the "upcoming" apple ar glasses, but things will probably eventually match up, like Android and iOS.
