l-p··on I logged my activities at 15-minute intervals for the whole year
Track & Graph [1] could work for you, it's FOSS and your full DB is easily exportable. You can set reminders and track either numbers, durations, or MCQs. I'm using it to track long-term post-COVID symptoms, fun stuff.

l-p··on What Did the Past Smell Like?
> The reverse of nose-blindness.

I had the pleasure to experience this in Paris during the first lockdown which was pretty strict. With the lack of cars on the streets the pale brown smog went away and for the first time in probably a century another smell became perceptible: sulfur.

Always nice to know that behind the fumes there's another thing ruining your lungs, this one was attributed to agricultural pollution.

l-p··on I accidentally built a spying app
We just wanted to build a gif-making app for a hackathon.

You could search for and browse movies by clicking on directors, actors and other staff, download a movie with one click, preview it to select what you want to clip, and make a gif out of it.

Turns out it was a very convenient interface to discover, download, and view movies. All we had to do was front-end to TMDb, a torrent search scrapper, and a layer between the Transmission CLI and the front-end.

We inadvertently built a popcorn-time clone in a day.

l-p··on A 3D sculpting web application
Like this: https://github.com/stephomi/sculptgl/commit/ba8cc5e60f793b72...

You don't need a framework for anything. You need to know your problem and have an idea on how to solve it.

l-p··on Ansible 2.10
First I used debian packages and maintained a (multiarch!) repository to setup my computers, then I used Ansible and had to first install Python and SSH on every machine, now I just run a script and I'm done in a few minutes and very few manual steps.

I found Ansible for personal computers to be brittle and cumbersome as reinstalls are usually for OS upgrades and those tend to have breaking changes.

l-p··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
There is a way to disable it via a bookmarklet:

l-p··on Ask HN: How's the Paris startup scene?
If you need a better paying job and need it fast, everyone in Paris is looking for developers, including myself. I'd love a good dev with some skills in sys, you can easily find my mail by taking a look at my HN profile if you're interested.
l-p··on Facebook, You Needy Sonofabitch
Imapfilter [1] would work.

It also uses regexes so it would be easy to convert mike-cardwell's rules.

l-p··on Ask HN: What Go framework for web API are you using in production?
I toyed with this: https://github.com/mattes/migrate

Quite simple, does the job.

l-p··on Ask HN: Self-taught developers, what repo helped land your first job?
Despite having completed much more interesting and impressive projects, my first CTO took me based on a few Ti-BASIC programs I wrote because I was bored in high-school.

http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/authors/107/10786.html

Landed me a job in a small game studio. I'll never understand.

l-p··on Show HN: Insect – a high-precision scientific calculator with physical units
There is already MiB (mebibytes) and MB (once actual megabytes, now what you call MMB).
l-p··on SSH Check – public SSH server testing tool
Or https://testssl.sh/ if you don't want to rely on a third-party.
l-p··on Windows Is Bloated, Thanks to Adobe’s Extensible Metadata Platform
Excerpt from the Radicale documentation:

> The Radicale Server does not and will not support the CalDAV and CardDAV standards. It supports the CalDAV and CardDAV implementations of different clients (Lightning, Evolution, Android, iPhone, iCal, and more).

l-p··on De-Googleify Internet
Slides are short, in French, and I only briefly mention gmail as it's the easiest thing to replace.

Also, not much you can say in a 10 minutes talk.

l-p··on De-Googleify Internet
> Gmail is objectively an amazing email app on both desktop browser and mobile.

Hum. I would not say "objectively".

I can't stand gmail, it does not come close to what I can do with Thunderbird and K-9, and I'm not doing anything complex. A webapp still can't compete with a native client.

> Lots of great apps like Google Docs, Calendar, and Translate exist to make your life easier for free.

Google services are not free, your privacy may be worth an app or two, but mine sure isn't.

I'm giving a talk next week on how to get rid of Google so I would not say I'm being impartial here.

l-p··on OverEncrypt: going beyond LetsEncrypt's HTTPS security defaults
Your best option is probably to read, understand, and use the configs at https://cipherli.st
l-p··on Flappy Bird Clone Code Injected into Super Mario World for SNES by Hand
See PoC||GTFO 0x10 [1] for the writeup on "Pokémon plays Twitch chat", a multi-staged hack that exploits Pokémon to exploit the Super GameBoy to exploit the SNES to then display the Twitch chat.

Note that the PDF can be loaded directly as a LSNES input replay and reproduce the exploit.

l-p··on Fedora on non-rooted Android phones – 2016 update
Nothing.

I've been using my phone as a backup git remote for a few years: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.antoniy.gi...

l-p··on Trix: A rich text editor for everyday writing
Actually, not every editor break it, this is not my real issue with WYSIWYG editors anyway.

My problem is that I don't want to use them. Unless they use markdown or another simple formatting language behind the scene, and allow you to switch to a simple `<textarea>` input, you can't avoid them.

I already have a text editor, I already have a way to generate "rich" text, I don't need another tool with another set of bindings, quirks, bugs and incompatibilities. Every editor has its own way to deal with very basic stuff: when writing a list what happens if you press return twice? Backspace on an empty element? Tab? You can't know beforehand.

I'm fine with giving tools to non-technical users, but there should be a way to disable such editors completely so it can adapt to any workflow.

l-p··on Trix: A rich text editor for everyday writing
It breaks Pentadactyl external editor feature as every other WYSIWYG editor do.

This will be a pain to use.

l-p··on How clickbait grew up and got sort of serious
Yup, clickbait is _everywhere_ : https://i.imgur.com/JX8EGpR.png
l-p··on Why I don’t like hackathons
I concur.

I Landed my last job by meeting someone at a hackathon. I found my current mid/long-term project doing another hackathon with the same person where we had the opportunity to develop a prototype and see that it worked.

I like hackathons because it's the only way for me to have two full days to actually _make_ something.

l-p··on Full email validation regex (RFC 2822)

l-p··on UK government's password checker sends plaintext password in the URL over HTTP
Well, how would they fit the passwords in the database if there was no limit? =)
l-p··on Superhot game
That's the opposite for me, I can go back to a good SP game but I can't stand playing the same MP game for more than a few hours per year.

Multiplayer is not pinnacle of gaming.

l-p··on It’s Time to Encrypt the Entire Internet
It's actually worse than plain HTTP, requesting HTTPS redirects you to the plain HTTP version.
l-p··on Half-Life 1 engine based games
It's more than a bunch of headers, the Source SDK contains the code for both `client.dll` and `server.dll`. They contain everything that is not the graphic/audio/net engine.

I assume the same thing applies to goldsrc.
