kxs··on Poll: What do you think of Google+?
me3, I'd really appreciate it, thanks in advance!
kxs··on Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN?
I don't think further restrictions will help. I'd prefer a fixed contingent of up/downvotes (or votes in general) per month/week/day which may be somehow related to your current karma level or will be dynamically altered each period and/or in addition for every 10 upvotes you get, you'll have an extra vote yourself.

Submissions should hardly give any karma. That should take care of most of the problems regarding submissions.

About the approval: It should probably be the other way around. Flagged submissions are added to a queue for review (maybe letting the community to vote once more and therefor reviving the submission) and duplicates with comments are merged.

Random mumble: I have the feeling that many discussions depend too much on the poster. Sometimes complete discussions shift because of a comment of an established poster or live and die with said poster. And it's from time to time not because of some valuable insight but rather the fact that it's him/her. I am probably the only one who feels like that and I don't have a solution (if it needs one). Hiding the username and having to do an extra click (profile e.g.) to see who's behind the post would probably minimize the problem. But it would make it harder to filter out posts (which would need another indicator karma/per comment ratio (e.g.) to make it at least a bit useful).

kxs··on Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN?
I think so too. I don't know whether submissions shouldn't give any karma, but in my opionion it should be limited. For instance they could start out with 0 points and the submitter gets a point for every 50 upvotes the story gets or something like that. Another possibility would be to seperate submission and comment karma and may be have them limited in some way as well. There is currently a big mismatch, you'd need ~5 highly "appreciated" comments to get the same amount of karma one medium apple story "earns" you. This makes karma as - some sort of metric - less useful.

Regarding the "laughs" I don't really understand what the big deal is. I like a funny/sarcastic (read: not stupid) comment that shows at least some insight or understanding of the matter or just pokes fun at a particular view. This is necessary and healthy for a discussion.

kxs··on 2011 MacBook Pros Crash Under Load
Officially? (Edit: Obviously they do now, just checked the Apple link) My Macbook Pro "died" just 1 month out of warranty and I was lucky that I'd purchased my mac from a reseller who replaced it in goodwill, others weren't so lucky. They didn't acknowledge it officially, although NVIDIA did. IIRC they replaced it with the same faulty board (august/september '08).
kxs··on C, The Beautiful Language
Many people want to leave out Java, that's probably why Klose is currently a substitute.
kxs··on Ars reviews the Motorola Xoom
It's still slow, almost unusable sometimes and iOS 4.3 won't come for 3G, so I guess we have to live with that.
kxs··on Why does Adobe Reader need so many updates?
I've no problems with its looks, but is there a way to not start with "fit page width" and therefore a bigger window? I always have to resize and change the modus which is unpleasant. (on Windows) Thanks in advance!
kxs··on Eliminate the Computer Science major
I'm studying CS in Berlin and we have 4 mathematical courses in the first 4 semesters: linear algebra, analysis I + II and stochastic. Besides stochastic, all of those courses are designded for engineers. In the first 4 semesters (basic study) we have 4 modules theoretical cs: basics of algebraic structures, automata and complexity, logic and specification and semantics.

The other 2 main modules are: technical cs and practical cs (methodical and practical basics of cs) in "practical cs" we learnt a functional pl (1st semester) and java (2nd). In technical cs: MIPS assembler (2nd), C and ARM assembler were a requirement in the 3rd semester.

So, although if you just look at the modules, the practical part takes up the biggest chunk (ECTS), it's only about 1/4th of the study.

kxs··on Calculus distilled into hours
I've to second that, it was a bit slow at times but overall pretty decent and far better than my university class. Is there anything similar for Analysis I and/or II?
kxs··on Google.com has an animated logo using an HTML/JavaScript particle simulator
Fine on http://www.google.de as well.
kxs··on Kindle vs. iPad Displays: Up close and personal
I bought a Samsung N210 for my mother which has a surprisingly good keyboard.

As a side note: IIRC there is a 10" thinkpad X netbook in Australia (for schools) and for a short time earlier this year, they displayed a 10" model on the lenovo website, so there may be hope...

A 11.6" or 12" version of the pixel qi diy kit would certainly be great.

kxs··on Kindle vs. iPad Displays: Up close and personal
Pixel Qi maybe, but 10" only atm, iirc.

kxs··on Bill Gates: In Five Years The Best Education Will Come From The Web
Well, tastes differ, but I tend to get bored pretty quick and can't stand verbose texts. In my mind they have to be briefly worded and exact and that's pretty hard to come by. Uwe Schönings "Theoretische Informatik- kurz gefasst" (similar to: Gems of Theoretical Computer Science) is an example of what I have in mind. It's hard to find something like that, most books are a pain to read (in my opinion).
kxs··on Worst Movie Year Ever?
I've to second that, although I haven't watched Toy Story 3 yet, how to Train Your Dragon was really good. I've actually the feeling that this year is better than last year. I really liked Kick Ass and I'm eager to watch despicable me. But yes, Grown Ups was absolutely terrible.
kxs··on Ask HN: How did you quit smoking?
It was cold turkey for me too. I didn't have any money left and no tobacco in the house. So I just stopped. I used to smoke quite a lot; usually hand-rolled cigarettes (non-filter) and about 35-40 a day. (Had been smoking for about 2 1/2 years up until then) It was rough the first couple of days, but it got better pretty quick. I tried to distract myself, with some video games, worked out pretty well, played for hours straight.

But I haven't had much problems quitting any habbits thus far. Overall I get hooked quite fast, but if I try to ignore and overcome the need for e.g. playing Quake Live( or something like that) I seem to don't care anymore after 2-3 days. (until I play again)

I still want to smoke from time to time, because I really liked it, but the desire usually vanishes 10min later.

kxs··on New Kindle Wifi: $139 3g: $189
This is a nice update and I will finally buy one, although the DX would be better suited for my needs, the price isn't quite right yet.

It should be mentioned that the new Kindle will arrive in the UK on August 27th as well. Should be good news for all EU customers. (Apparently can't ship outside the UK...)

£109.00 (~134EUR) Wifi-Only and £149.00 (~180EUR) 3G

kxs··on -2000 lines of code
Sure, but that goes either way and there is no tautology.
kxs··on -2000 lines of code
nothing infinite here.
kxs··on YouTube - iOS 4.0 on 3G iPhone (parody)
It helps to 'turn off' Spotlight:

3G: Settings-General-Home Button-Spotlight search

3GS: Settings-General-Spotlight search

At least my 3G is almost usuable again.

kxs··on IOS 4 on 3G(S) slow? Turn off Spotlight
I did a restart afterwards and it seem to make quite a difference (at least for me, I turned everything off), schould work for 3GS as well:

Settings-General-Spotlight search

kxs··on 15 Movies the Critics Got Wrong
That's why I usually don't care what critics say. Or I take it as a clue to do the opposite. Tastes differ. And my taste seem to differ a lot.

This being said, Freddy Got Fingered is one of my favorite movies.

kxs··on Poll: What OS do you use?
I used to use FreeBSD and switched later to Mac OS X (never really liked it though), which made me quite lazy. After my macbook pro gronked out, I switched back to Windows out of convenience. Besides I wanted to play some games again and had a few applications that would have required emulation, so I swallowed the (once) bitter pill and installed Windows again and I have yet to regret it. Been using Windows 7 x64 from the beginning (MSDNA) and I haven't had any problems. So, this is me, using windows 7.
kxs··on Ask HN: What Card/Board Games Are You Playing?
I enjoy playing Skat, though I only play a few times a year, we usually need some relative visiting to get a game going. I also like playing Catan and Backgammon.
kxs··on Ask HN: What's your computer setup?
e8400, 4GB Ram, 9800GT, Windows 7 x64, 22" Dell 2209WA, happy hacking keyboard <3, razer diamondback

But I'm hoping to be able to replace that machine in the near future with a `smarttop', preferably something like the marvell ebox or similar spec-wise (hopefully cortex a9)

My wm of choice has always been 'pekwm'

kxs··on I am a neuropsychologist. Ask me (almost) anything.
you need a certain karma level to be able to downvote

edit: it used to be 100, I dont know if its still the current threshold

kxs··on Kindle now available on woot.com for $149.99
It's $379 actually, they just introduced a slightly updated version.
kxs··on iOS 4 Update Now Avaliable
It feels slower. It seems to be possible to downgrade from iOS 4:

http://translate.google.de/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl...

kxs··on iOS 4 Update Now Avaliable
My update took about 45min (3G). But I don't have that much data on it, only ~4gigs.
kxs··on iOS 4 Update Now Avaliable
I've just updated and it certainly feels slower. Menus take forever to load.
kxs··on Low Powered Mini ARM? It is Now Possible
