kwere··on The hikikomori in Asia: A life within four walls
usually social outings become "fake" and being around people to be "social" becomes really sad
kwere··on Almost 30% of Americans Say College Not Worth It in Pew Poll
law in most countries unless you get to sucessfully practice on your own or as a partner of a firm doesnt pay well. Banking/finance is similar to a lesser extent with few good positions open compared to the talent pool.
kwere··on Sal Khan is pioneering innovation in education again
AI tutors can work around student engagement, mostly by making tedious theoretical memorization into small practical problems, trivias, "hand in hand" learning and active recall keeping the average student focused for more time
kwere··on Sal Khan is pioneering innovation in education again
Gini coefficient tell less valuable information than say total poverty rate, but a high gini coefficient can be an indicator of concentration of power in the "elites"
kwere··on Business Booms and Depressions Since 1775 (1943)
Its common knowledge that you should have around 50% of your assets in fixed income generating assets by the time your retire to not be forced to liquidate stocks in a downturn.
kwere··on Business Booms and Depressions Since 1775 (1943)
downturns are more due to the different timescale between investments and business cycles / market saturation. Current Market returns are due to previous allocated capital, investor chase past results hoping the trends continues, but market saturation or other shocks happens, scaring investor who rush to liquidate their positions, cratering the prices. Companies to keep certain profitability levels in the short term cut costs to the extreme, slowing growth/expansion and laying off workforce. IMHO to contain bubbles and busts, a lot more business/market data should be aviable to make informed investment decisions and make long term investment fiscally advantageous compared to shorter holdings
kwere··on Bernie Sanders calls for income over $1B to be taxed at 100%
So the incumbent "nobility" dont have to fear challenges to the status quo from the business arena. Circle back a minute fraction of such taxes to the common folks to keep consensus
kwere··on Jim Simons has died
Being able to BS yourself upward is a skill in itself. Management becomes "political" up the ladder
kwere··on I went to Yale—and I think two-parent families are more important than college
People who makes it tend to have some survivorship bias, overvalue their personal impact, undervalue external factors, merely luck.
kwere··on Dear Europe, please wake up
Front-office jobs will be kept local, but expensive / labour intensive backoffices will be moved to cheaper places.

Right now Eastern Europe due to bilingualism is a Hub for this: Poland, Czechia, Romania, Albania.

India will become appealing when most European business jargons will be english first. Already happens in Software dev, Marketing, Product design, even Legal / compliance, etc...

kwere··on Dear Europe, please wake up
China has eaten European manufacturing, India will eat most of Europe Service jobs through remote positions. Europe will be saddled with debts, looking like a disfunctional Argentina squabbling about populist socialist /nationalist talking points.
kwere··on Korea sees more deaths than births for 52nd consecutive month in February
Work Alienation is the byproduct of a mass-society and standardization/ commodification of goods & Services. Nobody gives a damn about your personal injections in your work bcs your work is fungible by design. Its mostly about being cheap and fast. On other ways very few would pay at scale premiums for "personalized" work.

Such things are even more pronuncied in communist societies where efficiency, political ortodoxy, collective needs are placed well above personal social needs.

kwere··on Korea sees more deaths than births for 52nd consecutive month in February
1. we dont have a couple of decades of runaway decline for most if not all countries. Even USA Social Security will be bankrupt by 2030s

2. People dont want to keep working till death while their parents enjoyed "UBI" in their golden years. Over 45s being the voting block of most countries will continue the Pension scheme bonanza till collapse

kwere··on Korea sees more deaths than births for 52nd consecutive month in February
China health care system is based on their single offsprings, that will be forced to shift hours from working/consuming to taking care of their elderly + offsprings.

8 Grandparents, 4 parents to take care on 2 working adults + 1 or more childrens. UnSustainable

kwere··on Minister defends arrest power for people feared to commit a hate crime in future
The "reasonable" way of handling such situations would be to notify suspects that they are in a watchlist for "terrorist threat" and listing maybe inside a police station what punishment the risk by "acting".
kwere··on Minister defends arrest power for people feared to commit a hate crime in future
in italy we often use as aggravation to senteces "futile reasons" to encompass a vast umbrella of reasons. "hate crime" alone is easily gameable term. Otherwise we would need to put all the leftists in prison for they hate towards the wealthy
kwere··on Former NASA Engineer Says He's Invented a Thruster That Doesn't Require Propell
For sure "Established Publications" have some protocols to pass sensitive informations to relative government agencies.
kwere··on The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the largest industrial co-op
capitalism is about accountability and trust at scale compared to previous systems that worked on connections that didnt scale well across classes / countries / cultures. Bankruptcy, is probably the best idea came out capitalism.

Competition between humans can turn ugly wheter on economic or political fields and "common folks" do ends up as collateral victims. Thats unchecked human nature

kwere··on The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the largest industrial co-op
striking workers usually would occupy factories, property they had no right to "seize". If workers quit / stopped showing on mass, nobody would have done anything
kwere··on The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the largest industrial co-op
co-ops existed well before industrialization, as guilds of artisans. Guilds were quite protective of their markets and IPs. You had to inherit the menbership or pay a hefty sum to enter the guilds.
kwere··on Canada Sought to Be a Hydro Superpower. Now Its Rivers and Lakes Are Drying Up
growth can also mean efficiency increase, not only "expansion". I rember that Japan is the most efficient society in its use of inputs at around 20%. there is enormous space for growth
kwere··on Treemap of World GDP by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) 2020
the economy wealth level should be about disposable income PPP after accounting for shelter, food and other basic necessities
kwere··on The News Business Is Cratering
Indipendent journalists, micro teams publications (<10 people) of hard hitting investigative journalism on topics that go viral on social media to reach millions of potential customers
kwere··on How a Solar Revolution in Farming Is Depleting Groundwater
there is no economy in Antartica besides resource extraction, which is banned. Instead a space economy (logistics, tourism, manufacturing, research) its on the rise. No selfsufficient space colonies in the next 50 years for sure
kwere··on Berlin's techno scene added to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
>culture is not valued in capitalism because it has no landlord

intellectual property is the way to monetize intangible culture

kwere··on Only real people can patent inventions – not AI, US Government says
yeah, making the cost of researh, patentably discovery negligible could kill the whole patent industry, an enourmous bottleneck to application of research and lower compound effects of discovery built on precedent discoveries. Case in point E-ink technology, still extremely expensive due to corporate choices that favoured "milking" over "scaling".
kwere··on A man has been swatted 47 times for making a joke about Norm Macdonald
in italy ambulances are mostly run by ngo-like red cross organization: the building is leased for free by the township, the ambulances are donated by local car dealers or by local fundraising, 80% of the workforce are volunteers. they are free to end users. Still there are private ambulances for specific services but are reasonable priced
kwere··on Is the Media Prepared for an Extinction-Level Event?
you need critical thinking skills to code, not all people can do it.
kwere··on Universities are failing to boost economic growth
universities for working class folks need to be a place to learn employable meta-skills. College enviroment being a space for personal growth, leisure, socialization is more of elitist legacy of a begone era where companies would train you from zero and most of students didnt really need to sell their labour to make a living (why unpaid interships exist).
kwere··on Birth rates are falling in the Nordics. Are natalist policies no longer enough?
human capitals in these countries is not distribuited the same as in the western world or even most of asia. Thats reality under the luxury belief that anybody can be "integrated"
