kumarharsh··on UK 'Right to repair' law to come in this summer
I thought the same too, until recently.

We had an old mixer-grinder which ran for a decade or so. After it broke down, I went to an official repair shop, and they quoted an amount which make buying a new one a better option. So we did - from different company. It turned out that the new one constantly gave us problems, but we stuck with it for years. And one day while cleaning up our home, we found the old mixer and gave it to our domestic help to keep if she could get it repaired.

She did get it repaired. For less than a DOLLAR! And it still runs better than the new-fangled mixer.

kumarharsh··on The Last Message Sent on AIM
I don't know about other countries, but in India at least, SMS's are generally paid and won't send if you don't have balance.

While WhatsApp/Telegram messages are actually free if you have got data.

And nowadays I get absolutely zero SMS's from people. All senders are now just bots and notification services.

kumarharsh··on Google Issues Quality Warning for Millions of Google Photos Users
This article reads like senseless hate-mongering.

The email this article is talking about is for users of the Google One subscription only. Of course they'd like their users to know that they can upload full quality photos to Google Photos - that's one of the main reasons I bought the subscription too!

Disclosure: I work at Google, but had bought the subscription before joining.

kumarharsh··on Firefox replaces Google Analytics with fake no-op in strict tracking protection
NoScript evolved over time.

It's not like you downloaded a Mozilla's executable one day and expected to see a Flaming Canine instead of a web browser.

Talk about clickbait!

kumarharsh··on Judge: Citibank isn't entitled to $500M it sent to various creditors last August
Wow, what an interesting piece of UI to manage such a critical piece of financial process. Banks are probably one of the worst offenders of UI and UX design, and half the times, I can't even reason why.
kumarharsh··on Arranging Invisible Icons in Quadratic Time
It is stunning to see this brought in the open - and in such a clear and seemingly easily reproducible way. Kudos to the OP for digging into this as much as he did. In a world of 8 billion people, I don't think anyone would have dug so deep to reproduce this problem affecting a large portion of population. I'd love to see this fixed. Hope Microsoft pays attention and fixes this, rather than ignore it like they do all the Feedback Hub/Uservoice feedbacks.
kumarharsh··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
I was referring to the last line:

"If it was up to these ignorant people we would still have kids getting polio in 2020."

It is quite possible that Polio might make a comeback if we become lax or let anti-vaxxers keep spreading their batshit propoganda.

That's what Trump effectively put in motion by withdrawing from WHO.

kumarharsh··on Average UX Improvements Are Shrinking over Time
That's positively the worst UX for logging in I've seen. Having to connect switch between apps and waiting for/fishing out the login email over 3-5 folders is so painful. And oh yeah - doesn't work in Incognito/non-default browser because the email app always opens the default browser in full cognito mode!
kumarharsh··on Average UX Improvements Are Shrinking over Time
I doubt that's because Windows wants you to use it more. It's the freaking OS! I think it has more to do with UWP and the Settings app itself. On the (slight) plus side, they have improved their search so much over Windows 7.

That's not entirely correct. You can use any regular old SSD: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-games-on-an-external-...
kumarharsh··on Full-Bleed Layout Using CSS Grid
Outlook doesn't even have IE btw... It has a custom MS Word compliant HTML parser/renderer (Facepalm emoji)
kumarharsh··on Full-Bleed Layout Using CSS Grid
Not necessarily. I'm on mobile, so can't link to code right now, but here's how it would happen:

You can have another .background element which spans all the rows (using grid-row-start and grid-row-end) and positioned in the centre column. Apply the shadows on it, and keep it before the content div in DOM order. That should do it.

kumarharsh··on Ask HN: How to get into the chip industry?
If this was reddit, you'd be swimming in reddit gold by now :-)

That's an amazingly detailed answer.

kumarharsh··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
True that the reservation system gets abused a lot in India. Living in North India, I frequently see rich families enjoying reservation benefits even when they don't need it. They don't realise they are eating up positions for the people who really need it. And the children of these rich families that the reserved seat as something they are entitled to and not affording any respect for the opportunity.

It's infuriating that reservations have become so abused, but any step by any party to change it would be met with such a fierce opposition that it's literally impossible to change.

kumarharsh··on Amnesty International India Halts Its Work in India Due to Government Reprisal
Toyota is NOT pulling out of India, and neither is it not expanding/investing more money. It was a newsbyte spread by some papers w/o citing named sources. The news was refuted by Government officials as well as Toyota India's Vice Chairman, who said Toyota would be investing about 20 Billion INR over the next 12 months.

kumarharsh··on India announces plan to connect 600k villages with optical fiber in 1000 days
That's so heartening to hear! I had friends from Assam who were similarly disappointed by the broadband coverage there, and had planned doing something about it, but the problem was too hard to solve unless you had deep pockets. It's great to see Government doing it instead of leaving it up to private operators.

Additionally, the recent announcement of laying Fiber cables to the Andaman and Nicobar islands is another good thing - I don't remember anybody talking any policy related points about the remote islands ever. Note: Andaman is far from Indian mainland (1200km) - about as far as New York is from Georgia, and it's closer to Myanmar (100km). It has a paltry population of only 300,000, spread across scores of islands.

kumarharsh··on I Love MDN, or the cult of the free in action
I think making employers pay for it can cause the cost to be too high. And still there'd be thousands of small-medium companies, schools, and universities who won't buy the subscription - the majority of the population won't have access to it.

I believe it HAS to be kept free for the general public, no matter what.

kumarharsh··on AMA with the Creator of Photopea
I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw such a good work done by a clone. Every feature you use is in the place you'd expect it to be in Photoshop. And it actually works "better" than photoshop for light-medium work because it doesn't take forever to load or eat 2 GB RAM at startup. And boy is it zippy!

I recently needed to do some image manipulation in Chrome OS, and the only thing which was easy enough to use without making an account which came to mind was Photopea.

In fact, just because it has copied the photoshop UX so well, I can say that it might be the best image editor on Linux too! GIMP has been a pain in the neck everytime I've tried to use it. And I've used Linux for like 7 years!

Brilliant clone!

kumarharsh··on Available for preorder today, Surface Duo
I was very excited for it, but it is way too expensive (sensible, given the experimental nature) and seems like US only (nonsensical)... Did the first iPhone or Pixel launch in US only?
kumarharsh··on The story behind Google Books: Torching the Modern-Day Library of Alexandria (2017)
"It was strange to me, the idea that somewhere at Google there is a database containing 25-million books and nobody is allowed to read them. It’s like that scene at the end of the first Indiana Jones movie where they put the Ark of the Covenant back on a shelf somewhere, lost in the chaos of a vast warehouse. It’s there. The books are there. People have been trying to build a library like this for ages—to do so, they’ve said, would be to erect one of the great humanitarian artifacts of all time—and here we’ve done the work to make it real and we were about to give it to the world and now, instead, it’s 50 or 60 petabytes on disk, and the only people who can see it are half a dozen engineers on the project who happen to have access because they’re the ones responsible for locking it up."
