It is stunning to see this brought in the open - and in such a clear and seemingly easily reproducible way. Kudos to the OP for digging into this as much as he did. In a world of 8 billion people, I don't think anyone would have dug so deep to reproduce this problem affecting a large portion of population. I'd love to see this fixed. Hope Microsoft pays attention and fixes this, rather than ignore it like they do all the Feedback Hub/Uservoice feedbacks.

You should read the rest of his blog posts.

These are really good ones:

This is my personal favorite: https://randomascii.wordpress.com/2018/01/07/finding-a-cpu-d...

His posts on floating point maths are very interesting too.

You'd think Microsoft would have automated perf / regression tests running with scenarios for large amounts of files.

But then, there's so much variability with Windows that it's impossible to think of all scenarios to test for.

It may be too hard to do with a source base that old. Who knows what's required to even build it!

I think it has more to do with Microsoft shifting towards a more Google-like strategy, where more time is spent coming up with ways to extract value from customers, rather than provide value to customers.

Like when they fired all of those quality assurance people a while back, I can't imagine they made that decision to improve Windows 10 for their customers.
