kukx··on Absurd Trolley Problems
Certainly the simulation and the action in the real life has some connection. It just a matter how strong the connection is. I guess no one will test it though, at least that is what I hope.
kukx··on Why nobody ever wins the car at the mall (2018)
Yeah, like those ads with "I am a doctor and I recommend ...", where the speaker is just an actor.
kukx··on They're made out of meat (1991)
It is false. There are parts of mathematics that have no known application to physics.
kukx··on Laundry symbols make no sense
What about, instead of changing the symbols we add text. Or just teach them at school :) Symbols are great for brevity and aesthetics, but they have to be learned to be useful. Oh I got an idea, what about a QR code with all the info included, you just have to scan it ;)
kukx··on Bullshit Jobs
It apparently was useful to someone. It is only BS insofar it can be automated easily.
kukx··on Mammals can breathe through their intestines (2021)
Ok, so if mouth to mouth does not work, flip over...
kukx··on Religious Discrimination at Google
Are you not moving the bar higher, from just an example, to now evidence? I am for high standards, it is just dangerous that, in the current culture, they are not the same for all.
kukx··on Religious Discrimination at Google
If you were to replace the religious belief with gender in his story would your assessment stay the same? You can use this method for example in this quote: "...VPs of research laughing in my face to HR representatives questioning my sanity based on my sincerely held religious beliefs...".
kukx··on US moves closer to recalling Tesla’s self-driving software
It makes sense as long as it is failproof. But is their tech better than Tesla's? I assume it is not and they will have to severely limit the capabilities of the system. Maybe it will work in traffic jams, simple routes.
kukx··on EU reaches deal to make USB-C a common charger for most electronic devices
Agree 100%. The cookie law is the most visible failure of these regulations. I feel like they should pay me from their own pockets each time I have to click the cookie banner. And by their own pockets I mean the money they got from other sources than taxpayers money. Of course someone will argue that the intentions were good. Often they are! But it does not make it much better.
kukx··on Elon Musk declares end to remote working at Tesla
In short a dedicated employee is the one that is willing to sacrifice a lot for the success of the company.

And assuming employees being equal in capabilities I regard the ones unwilling to take this extra burden as less dedicated than the ones that accept it.

kukx··on Elon Musk declares end to remote working at Tesla
On the other hand the most dedicated will stay. Assuming employees being equal in other respects it will be good for the company in the long run.
kukx··on MIT Engineers Create New Material Stronger Than Steel and Light as Plastic
> for free, as it was American taxpayers who financed this project.

Just because something was financed by taxpayer money does not mean it should be free. It is definitely not a rule or how things work. Although I am curious what are the disadvantages of making it free, I bet there are some, even if lightweight.

kukx··on How to draw sub cutaways in MS Paint (2015)
Paint me surprised. I would never guess that it was made in the old ms paint. It does not seem like an adequate tool for the job. Still the effect is great, so maybe I am missing something.
kukx··on Intuit asked Mailchimp employees to pay medical costs out of pocket
The companies compete for workers, especially highly skilled ones. One company rising wages would push others to react in a similar way assuming they compete for the same talent.
kukx··on Lead exposure in last century shrunk IQ scores of half of Americans: study
Is it certain that the Pb causes the lower IQ or maybe there is some other factor and poorer people happen to have higher concentration?
kukx··on Names of Canada truck convoy donors leaked after reported hack
Well they live in large part on state money according to VivaFrei.
kukx··on AI is changing chemical discovery
The price is great, the downside is that you do not know whether the server owner reads your data. The "jobs" run in a Docker container on somebody's machine.
kukx··on Tesla FSD beta crashes into object [video]
> there appears to be few if any incentives for FSD to improve beyond...

I think it is simply not true. Creating a FSD that could replace human drivers eg in case of trucks is potentially highly lucrative and it would make the economy more efficient.

kukx··on Tesla FSD beta crashes into object [video]
> without trying to kill people Do you suggest that Tesla is trying to kill people? That would be a ridiculous statement.

I bet the risk of getting injured by Tesla beta version of FSD is miniscule compared to a risk of getting into accident caused by a human driver. I am not for banning either of them. Even when we get to the point where FSD is much safer than drivers I would be against of banning humans.

kukx··on Tesla FSD beta crashes into object [video]
Why do you discard the possibility that Tesla will save lives in the long term? You may say it is unlikely, but it is not like Musk did not deliver world scale breakthroughs.

Also, regarding the medicine, do you really believe we do not do "unethical" medical testings? I guess it depends on your ethical standards and how high they are :)

But let's get back to cost benefit trade off. COVID vaccines tests were rushed. So it is obviously sometimes worth it.

There is a risk in not taking a risk.

kukx··on Tesla FSD beta crashes into object [video]
It is faster this way. And anyway it would be impossible to simulate the real world scenarios in the synthetic environment. One of the potential benefits of FSD is that it will save lives, hence should we go slow about it or take a reasonable risk and get it done. There is a risk in going slow too.
kukx··on Who keeps an eye on clipboard access?
It can be useful of you want to use a non standard way to paste stuff, example a right mouse button in putty.
kukx··on No amount of alcohol is good for the heart, says World Heart Federation
Also the exceptions exist usually for a good reason. Trying to get rid of them without understanding it is a bad idea.
kukx··on Basic income would not reduce people’s willingness to work
The conclusion is derived from the basic principles. Of course if even more money was given directly to non productive people the prices would increase even faster!
kukx··on Basic income would not reduce people’s willingness to work
Of course. Printing money inflates its supply. And increasing the demand for products (by providing easy money) without increasing the supply of products (and actually decreasing it by restricting work) will lead to higher prices. It is economics 101 and it was tested by many countries eg Germany before the WW or more recently Venezuela.
kukx··on Basic income would not reduce people’s willingness to work
And their income will grow on trees.

It will fail unless the government gets easy money from eg producing oil like Emirates. Otherwise someone needs to produce stuff. We already have a big inflation problem that is directly related to policies that rain money on those not working. Let's not make things even worse, please.

kukx··on To stop building heat islands, stop overbuilding parking lots
Let's cover parkings with PV roofs then we can make use of this energy.
kukx··on In MySQL, use “utf8mb4” instead of “utf8” (2016)
The strict sql_mode is often manually disabled. I bet it is off on most shared hostings.
kukx··on Why Restaurants Are So Fucked – Part II
Why should everyone be paid a lot? Is everyone's labor really worth the same? Should not people be paid according to the value of their input? I am super fine with people charging me little for their services as long as they deem that it makes sense for them and the quality is acceptable. I want people that can provide great value for a fair price to outcompete others, because I want to promote them and hopefully they will develop and make economy a little bit better a little bit more efficient.
