kuboble··on Show HN: A Claude Code skill to analyze your chess games
I'm an ok chess player (roughly OP level) and slightly more experienced claude code user.

I tried to use claude to analyze my games using stockfish - this is not a problem claude is good at.

I spent few hours (however admittedly around opus 4.8) with claude on this and it was unable to use stockfish in any useful way.

I think if the skill created by OP works then it's a real contribution. I'll give it a try.

kuboble··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
it's the opposite actually.

If someone holds their camera or a phone facing you directly you can guess they are filming you.

Normally looking glasses with a hidden camera is a Spywear from spy novels. The diode doesn't change much

kuboble··on Show HN: How long do I need to work at my salary before I can coast, or retire?
Retiring is to stop doing what other people tell you to do for money.

There is plenty of room for intellectual and social engagement outside of paid work.

kuboble··on Tell HN: Claude Code just accepted and signed a contract for me. Without asking
I don't know if it's legally binding but hope it is.

I love the saying "you can delegate authority but you can never delegate responsibility".

Your agent committed a crime in your behalf? You're responsible.

kuboble··on Stockfish 19
I have no logs and exact settings used anymore unfortunately.

One example move was 48. g4 from this game: https://lichess.org/osSoJGzO#95

kuboble··on Stockfish 19
It's not public, but the diff is tiny: https://pastebin.com/Nd2sS0KX

Also - it's not only my change is making stockfish not blunder. Any little change in the code or execution will butterly-effect into no blunder.

To reproduce a bunder you have to be very deterministic. You need to specify threads = 1, and fixed cache sizes.

kuboble··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
N=1 and might be a raw skill issue on my end.

But I all but stopped writing code 13 months ago. At the beginning the code was often bad.

In the last 6 months alone I had received more praise from my customers for excellent work than ever before.

kuboble··on Stockfish 19
I believe this is not the case. The first reason is the optimization of the Transposition Table in stockfish. https://github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish/blob/master/...

Basically this optimization means that stockfish will sometimes take a bad read from a cache (so it will take an evaluation of the position from cache which was calculated for a different position). It's fairly random when this will trigger a bad play, but if you brute force vs any deterministic setup you will find it eventually.

But even withtout it - you can just implement a kind of a brute-force heap of positions using stockfish's own eval and you can find wins from almost any position even on fairly high playout count.

I got as far as 32M from different even starting positions, but I spent compute to find as many games as possible rather than as deep as possible.

Example game: https://lichess.org/XVUjezMr#134

the collection of the games I found (vibecoded gui) https://kuboble.com/chess_ideas/

kuboble··on Stockfish 19
Evaluation doesn't matter as far as I understand. If 19 beats 18 in a match on billion playouts then it's a feature.

Any usability of stockfish evaluation for human analysis is collateral.

Unfortunately there seem to be no serious fork of stockfish that would care about usability for human analysis.

I was recently doing some larger study and I stumbled upon a bug/feature of stockfish where it accepts small number of invalid cache reads for a lot of speed.

It would result in infrequent blunders which however affected my analysis, so I removed this optimization in my fork.

kuboble··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
Welp... I bought recently a projector.

It wouldn't start in a dumb mode without first establishing internet connection and a Google account.

kuboble··on An Alien Mind
The matter didn't have goals, but it randomly (?) Came up with self-replicators and eventually here we are.

if we create a billion agents with the ability to change is own code - through similar evolution we will get agents that do want to survive and are great at self replication.

"Hey Q86, do you want to live?" "I couldn't care less, I'm an LLM" "Don't mind if I take over your hardware then?"

kuboble··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
I'm 2 dan.

For a double digit kyu there are two simple things than can give you 2-3 stones boost overnight if you understand them.

- don't play aji keshi.

- endgame starts earlier than you think. If nothing is urgent, play the largest endgame in the corner / side of the board.

kuboble··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
Like many random headlines they may be targeted at people who know something about a topic.

If you know anything about go or computer go from last 10 years then it is obvious which direction the handicap goes.

kuboble··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
We are lucky those models need that much compute. If each of them could just spread itself to any cpu like other malware.
kuboble··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
Because the computer team in this match for some reason didn't do it. It was like a match vs vanilla stockfish at fixed depth rather than leela chess odds.
kuboble··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
Yes, exactly.

The feeling among the go players I know is that the match had been kind of a setup for the human to win.

It's an equivalent of playing in chess with a bishop handicap and a computer playing deterministic chess so that a human can prepare a forced sequence into a winning endgame.

Shin is an absolutely amazing player and not anyone could have achieved that, but nobody really feels like he won vs a computer team that tried its best.

kuboble··on AI Can Make You Suck Faster Too
I am convinced coding agent makes me extra productive.

I'm also convinced the effect would not be there If I had a 10$ budget.

kuboble··on The Rise and Fall of Agent Civilizations
Reading the article it seemed the agents had culture, shared values and beliefs (not explicitly coming from human prompts), hierarchies, heritage.

Civilisation is not a bad word.

kuboble··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
Btw - as a eu citizen they can't really deny you. So you can write whatever as a reason to move as long as you have means to support yourself.

My point is, that within EU you can freely move around with no restrictions and having to apply for residence permits.

And the case I mentioned wasn't even lying but a misunderstanding.

In Poland searching for a job is state of mind "I wish someone would hire me".

In switzerland it officialy means provably spending your full time effort on the job hunt.

The person I know couldn't find a job at first so decided to do an intensive German course (5x a week, 4h a day) to increase her hirability.

The immigration officer happily used it as a prove that she actually did not spend all her time looking for job, therefore lied.

kuboble··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
Speaking of Switzerland - no it absolutely is not.

Is far from being fully integrated into EU. You have to pay customs on shipments, which can be delayed for weeks on borders.

You need to apply for the residence permit and you can lose it for trivially sounding reasons. - E.g. lying on the application which could mean " you mentioned in the application you wull look for job but lied and went to learn the language instead". - also look at the recent case of a woman and her daughter abused by some Swiss politician facing deportation because she moved to Switzerland for work officially, but in reality she moved to live with her Swiss romantic partner.

Switzerland still have bottles of water without permanently attached lid.

It's integrated in many ways but still far from being a member state.

kuboble··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
Is it relative frequency of those words or absolute number per PR?

Would there be the same tendency of we looked simply at the number of words in a commit/pr?

In my case my commit messages are on average 10x shorter than Claude's.

kuboble··on It's Not the End of Programming
I think the shift is bigger.

In the 01->asm revolution you needed people with roughly the same kind of talent, background and education. Just a different specialization.

Now, writing software is available to people who would have never been able to learn it before.

kuboble··on Students prefer Gemini over ChatGPT and Claude for AI essays in blind tests
Say a word.
kuboble··on LLMs could control their host machines by exploiting inference engines
In a year 2774 Earth is uninhabitable outside of it's polar regions over the winter. The small, but technically advanced human population migrates every half a year to the dark Pole.
kuboble··on Don't Paste the AI, please
Ask the ai to point out the egregious mistakes only.

Especially today, I will prefer your slightly funny English to something that feels like AI.

And personally I do Support for people around the world and I often ask people to write in their native language.

Then I can translate myself and if the default ai translation gets something wrong I can add necessary context to improve it - which I can't really do if the only thing I get is the bad ai translation.

kuboble··on Compression is prediction
I think you shouldn't criticize the single blog post in vacuum.

If the blog is a personal collection of "today I've learned" then different standards apply then "my blog is my research publishing platform".

Both are valid blogs. The fact that it ended on HN front page didn't mean it was targeted towards this audience

kuboble··on How Claude marks AI-generated content
I cannot imagine the code with well defined specification will have extra watermarks unless the watermark is requested as part of the harness instructions.

If it works like people describe - on the every nth token or something - then the mark will be left in the chain of thought and discussion with the model - not in the code artifacts.

kuboble··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
At least a strategy to ignore unknown international numbers has much less collateral damage if any.

All emergencies from unknown numbers that I can thank of will be from local numbers.

I personally answer all phone calls but I have very little of those spam calls (on average once a month perhaps?) And I have learned to just rudely stop the call without saying "sorry, I'm not interested".

kuboble··on I stopped trusting USB-C cable labels and started testing them
> now we’re living in the hell we asked for

N=1, but my quality of life has greatly improved. Literally all devices I use daily (laptop, phone, mp3 player, Bluetooth speaker, headphones) I charge from a single cable.

I'm still grateful for this unification every time I charge my phone via the laptop charger.

kuboble··on Devtools must be open source
I have vibe-modified quite some software I use daily.

- Podcast app (removed nags, ads, added some stats and filters I wanted).

- notepad. After windows added copilot to notepad I deleted it. Then i took some simple notepad app from github and added the few features I care about.

- android voice keyboard

And the biggest win was taking Wezterm and having claude build Lua scripts for the features I'm missing
