kubiiii··on Royalty statements of a Grammy-nominated artist
There is a related post from David Lowery (2013), sorry if someone already mentionned this (link is from his own blog):

http://thetrichordist.com/2013/06/24/my-song-got-played-on-p...

His songs seem to have a little bit more exposure than in the discussed article.

kubiiii··on Apple Said to Be in Talks to Buy Beats for $3.2 Billion
I tend to agree when it comes to headphones. I'd go with sennheiser over any other brand anytime. But the bose soundlink mini (bluetooth speaker, they are quite fashionable these days) has an incredible sound and a similar price tag as the vastly inferior beats pill.
kubiiii··on Sell your S.F. street parking spot for $20?
I thought of a similar but somewhat different system where cooperative users of a paying system would point free parking spot when passing by or leaving the spot. This would not ensure the spot to be free upon arrival of a user but it would give an edge and prevent the hassle of dealing with someone who (reasonably) wants the spot you supposedly paid for.

I thought of this while struggling to find a parking spot in Paris. Traffic jams and parking spot searches are great moments to have ideas.

kubiiii··on The End of Food?
You are right. I've been working in this domain for 15 years. Technologies such as GPS, auto guidance, remote sensing, were common in agriculture back then. Some farmers are hackers too. I saw some pretty amazing Excel (!) spreadsheets modeling crop growth or disease damage.

There is something true when he says that farms are inefficient factories. They sometimes fail to give a proper income to the famer, considering the work they put in. But for me the solution is not overspecialized industrialized farms growing one crop for the rest of the world. It would be better to have highly versatile farms dedicated to fulfill the needs of specific areas to minimize transportation impact. I've never seen any environnemental protection concern related to the soylent production. It's all about saving time while eating healthy.

I saw a documentary about chinese farmers growing tomatoes. They could not imagine eating what they were growing. Pretty sad for a farmer.

kubiiii··on When Sued Don't Tweet
Maybe when your position largely depends on the public opinion and will be taken from you before you have a chance to have a trial. Maybe there is no pattern but elected officials, rock stars, often cry out their innocence when being accused of something, while having great lawyers.
kubiiii··on Freelancer.com is destroying my life
Depends on the size of their dream and of the size of their trucks.
kubiiii··on Amazon, in Threat to UPS, Tries Its Own Deliveries
Those are great services. Pro tip if you have a garder, order your compost bags there, they are dirt cheap & they put them in your trunk, no more hassle.
kubiiii··on I wish I could read Wikipedia like this
I like it a lot, my use of wikipedia often leads to a bunch of opened tabs and a lack of focus on what I was looking for in the first place (which might also be a great thing depending on your mood).
kubiiii··on Dart: The World's Smallest Laptop Adapter
Very nice product. I have an (fairly) old compaq laptop with a built in adapter and even though its heavier than it should be, pluging the cable is a delight.

I use the HN facebook feed (yes I do) and there is no direct link on it, just the video (maybe specific to KS?). Also the music in the video is distracting. It is way overcompressed.

kubiiii··on Drop Dropbox
Well it's a start to know this board member stance on this issue and acting accordingly (i.e unsuscribing or dismissing depending on the importance one give to the issue).
kubiiii··on How Dropbox Knows When You’re Sharing Copyrighted Stuff
It's more about watermarks than hashes, maybe the author mentions hashes to make it more simple to understand. Modern watermarks can survive most treatments. Even a screener can still be detected.
kubiiii··on Why Apple Will Never Make Printers Again (2009)
I agree. And I don't think the small margins really is a problem if you come out with a "disrupting" printer. I don't think the portable music players margins were that high when they released the ipod.

Then again, I don't know what a disrupting printer would look like. Printers always appeared to me as awkward computer/realworld interfaces.

kubiiii··on Show HN: Trontium Reactor, the first USB Power Delivery battery
This (nice) feature should be more heavilly advertised on the website. Would the app also allow to schedule power off / on?
kubiiii··on Show HN: Trontium Reactor, the first USB Power Delivery battery
Two things from the website : >We created Trontium to drive humanity forward Ok I cant discuss the reasons why you created trontium and driving humanity forward is indeed a great goal but wow this is just a (rather cool) battery.

Plus I think the keyboard (a yamaha psr E403 I think) featured in the pictures is not usb powered.

Other than that I'm impressed by the 8 charges you can make with the dewalt drill. Great to build something far from power outlets.

kubiiii··on Show HN: an online shop that bargains with you
Great idea, dissapointing proof of concept. There are many things to do to work out a bargaining algorithm.

What is the price of a similar item in other online stores? What does the potential customer finds appealing in the deal? Is it the first time the user tries to bargain for the same or similar item? Are there other items of interest (that the user browsed) we could throw in the bargain to make the user buy at the listed price? Or redirecting the user to a feature enhanced item for the same price.

Offering a lower price as soon as the user starts bargaining might also make him think that listed prices are not real prices.

kubiiii··on Free Startup Ideas
Problem solved either ways!
kubiiii··on Dragdis – Drag and drop anything anywhere
Awesome. Even more awesome : integration with trello. But I'll definitely use it. Is storage size a concern? I understand that the pictures are actually stored in Dragdis.
kubiiii··on SparkFun: We Hear You
Metrix multimeter usually are blue. I can think of at least another quality multimeter brand that use the yellow/dark grey. What if red was not even an option to make cheap multimeter and if all the colors were covered by patents?
kubiiii··on I am burned out while still in learning phase
So true. On one side you have tech blogs & hackers launching successful (or not) start ups. But one should not forget that on the other side you still have many people in big companies dealing with pre 90' databases or applications, interacting with their unhelpful computer guy, struggling with ie6 or ie7. You can bring some joy to them one application at a time.
kubiiii··on Soulseek is still alive
This brings back memories. Soulseek was(is) super efficient. I remember directly browsing users HDs and sending message to them to congratulate them on their taste. I'd definitely try it out again.
kubiiii··on Radar data suggests missing Malaysia plane flown deliberately toward Andamans
If you hijack a plane odds are high that you screw up everything and crash.
kubiiii··on The gargantuan stupidity of the financial transactions tax
So high frequency trading somewhat helps reducing the spread which is a good thing. I can understand that. But if HFT is a fix, instead of taxing HFT why not making it a task banks would deal with and earn money from it? A percentage of the revenue enabled by HFT would go to the bank and the rest to society.
kubiiii··on Corruption Perceptions Index 2013
I'll stand in line for a TL;DR of the methodology. Another thing bothering me is that corruption perception is somewhat relative. In some countries it is normal behaviour to bribe police agents or administration employees. It comes with the job, as a perk and is hardly considered as corruption. This is less likely to change the ranks of the countries, rather the dynamic of the perceived corruption levels.
kubiiii··on Google Loses Emergency Bid To Keep “Innocence Of Muslims” Film Online
>If she didn't want to be associated with the film, she didn't have to act in it.

>you should expect no control over the final product

So be sure to watch the final product before acting in a movie.

kubiiii··on Instapainting Turns Your Photos Into Hand-Painted Oil Paintings On The Cheap
This might even add an extra value if you somehow link the painting to the artist. But I think it's the idea behind the marketplace.
kubiiii··on How the US Treasury imposes sanctions on me and every other "Stephen Law"
If you have nothing to hide it's fine. Well it's not. Stalkers and bullies love to find informations wether it's shameful or not. It makes their task easier.
kubiiii··on European Commission proposes a reform to the way the Internet is managed and run
He'd be somewhat protected, but most certainely under heavy surveillance and most probably on a no fly list because of his friendship with Iran.
kubiiii··on Glenn Greenwald's news site, The Intercept, is up
I do think that the appearance of this new media matters. If not, why using a template at all? Or even pictures? Only the words matters, thats why the presentation should not be distracting and using a random template is.
kubiiii··on Did English ever have a formal version of “you”?
I learned this while playing Ultima 7, serpent isle. I literally learned english as a teenager while playing that game. Thanks Origin for that.
kubiiii··on You Won’t Believe How Much Money We Wasted On Bad Hires In 2013
Isn't the bad hire/good hire feeling that is described here much to personal? If the so called bad hire somehow senses the hostility, no wonder why he leaves the company.

If you inadvertently cross a few red lines as a new hire you can ring a few alarms in your hirer's mind. If those red lines are in the company culture that's fine, you might be a bad hire (or the company culture might suck, which should have the same consequences). But sometimes those red lines are totally hirer specific.
