kubiiii··on How much energy can you store in a stack of cement blocks?
I was about to post the exact same idea. I don't know if it would be efficient (plus mechanicaly lifting up a building is an engineering nightmare to do) but it would be a very elegant way of storing solar energy, or energy recovered from lost calories.
kubiiii··on Palestine's unique stretchy ice cream [video]
I discovered it (the skinos brand) in greece this summer (Halkidiki-sithonia : magnificent beaches), just with an ice cube. Very unusual smell (reminiscent of pine trees) and very nice taste. I am still to find someone who dislikes it.
kubiiii··on Making music using new sounds generated with machine learning
Even when it comes to electronic music, most of the stunning new sounds we come across are achieved by hacking or tweaking simple systems : over use of compressor, overuse of LFO for dubstep basses, bitcrushing, use of half defective samplers producing slightly out of tune sound, prepared pianos...
kubiiii··on Making music using new sounds generated with machine learning
Somewhat related (released in 2002) the Hartmann neuron. http://www.vintagesynth.com/misc/neuron.php Never had the "chance" to put my hands on it.
kubiiii··on Raspberry Pi 3B+ Specs and Benchmarks – The MagPi MagazineThe MagPi Magazine
Hope to see some improvements for the A+ in the future either. There are not many low power alternative to it right now (the zero would be but too scarce right now). Out of the box a pi 3 is roughly sucks 300/400 mA whereas the A+ is arount 100 and 50/60 can be achieved by tweaking it.
kubiiii··on Europe still burns witches – if they’re named Monsanto
Few verifiable facts? I'm sure you can verify that the author really has a garden and controls weeds using round-up (why remove weeds by hand which is totally feasible, part of growing a garden responsably, and an infinite source of satisfaction upon achievement?), and has had no symptoms of intoxication (yet). Point proven!
kubiiii··on What’s up with the Beep driver in Windows 7? (2010)
Somewhat (maybe) related : another world from Éric Chahi used to support the pc speaker as sound output, and had digitized sound effects and voices (very low quality but still incredible).
kubiiii··on Will your driverless car kill you so others may live?
There ils also an issue with making different cars from different car makers cooperate efficiently. When an accident can't be avoided, involved cars would need to share info and processing power to behave optimaly and act as master and slaves.
kubiiii··on Raspberry Pi Zero: the $5 computer
I immediately ordered one. It does not have a camera port though, I hoped there were ways to operate the camera through the GPIO but could not find anything.
kubiiii··on Computers made between the 70s and the early 90s
I found it and it was a PC sorry for the wrong lead. http://www.hpmuseum.net/display_item.php?hw=43 Awesome piece of gear anyway. My first computer, given to me by my uncle in 92.
kubiiii··on Computers made between the 70s and the early 90s
Anyone remember a pre PC era computer with a "touch screen" and a printer built into the screen?
kubiiii··on What Happened After Gravity Payments Set a $70k Minimum Wage
He fails at getting the most he can out of every dollar since he overpays Mary according to the rest of his quote.
kubiiii··on Raspberry Pi touch display
Well for most of us €30 (the cheapest I found here in france) for a tablet makes it a disposable device (this is different in developping countries).

There is a recycling tax here that is as low as ~5 cts for a tablet or a comparable electronic device. The burden of recycling is on the developping countries we send our used gear to. Not to mention the use of raw materials.

Can't say that this does not apply to higher end device that tend to be unrepairable but their lifespan is longer.

kubiiii··on Raspberry Pi touch display
A budget android tablet can cost slightly less than $60, and comes with the touch display, the processing power ( more than a raspberry's), the memory (more than a raspberry's), embedded wifi, bluetooth, sometimes GPS, two cameras.

Don't get me wrong, i love the pi, and the problem is not the price tag of the pi + accessories but the unsustainable pricetag of entry level android tablets.

Plus the pi comes with its GPIO, raspbian, and is more suited than an aout of the box android tablet for most projects.

kubiiii··on The Myth of Big, Bad Gluten
About comparing with the ability to digest lactose, the big difference it is notably "easier" for evolution to keep in adulthood a gene that exists in 100% of children than to come up randomly with something that would allow digesting something new. It would come in handy to digest cellulose, and would have avoided many famins yet we still can't.
kubiiii··on Vim on a Mechanical Typewriter
You can also use an old usb keyboard controller board. Besides the hassle of point to point soldering all keys to the keyboard controller matrix (after mapping all combinations), you get a USB compliant device. Disclaimer : I have never used this technique for a whole keyboard but it worked pretty well to transform an old arcade controler to use mame or to midify an old organ bass pedal.
kubiiii··on Russia bans Reddit
There are ~ three employees (ok sometimes 1 or 2) managing complaints in every average size home appliance store throughout the world, so why not for a successful internet company?
kubiiii··on The Cars Uber Shows You Before You Hail a Ride Are Bogus

kubiiii··on 8-bit GIFs of Japanese life

kubiiii··on Why “Whiplash” Won an Oscar for Best Editing
I really liked the player when I was a a teen, I would always pick the Fiorentina in FIFA games to play with him. Overmedication (if not worse) so that he can always be on the field has put him in this condition. Very sad. But I read he feels better with his legs now.
kubiiii··on Why “Whiplash” Won an Oscar for Best Editing
Many examples would prove you right, but I can't help thinking it would be better to fuel someone's desire for excellence instead of abusively pushing him.

Counter example would be Marion Bartoli who won wimbledon against all odds and her own limits, pushed by her father, then immediately stopped being a professional tennis player. Too many sacrifices. Pretty common in women pro tennis.

kubiiii··on PixQL: SQL for image processing
You can imagine composing a mask from several images using Join or Union. Summing up images to make HDR, only on some areas of the pictures based on different criteria to produce the mask.

Another possibility would be to output a mosaic based on properties of a set of pictures.

I also vote for the use of UPDATE and also the use of INSERT to insert some part of image 1 x mask in image 2 x mask, or insert geometric features x mask.

I think this project is a great idea, thanks for submiting it.

kubiiii··on PixQL: SQL for image processing
You could even apply it to the mask resulting from the select. Mathematical morphology, advection using several pictures, interpolation, there are many use case that would be possible with a single query. But maybe I'm too optimistic with the current possibilities. Promising project anyway.
kubiiii··on PixQL: SQL for image processing
I find this interesting, but I also would like to see more complex use cases. For example using using some kind of select union on several images to output a synthetic image highlighting differences or similarities?
kubiiii··on Nuon, the gaming chip that nearly changed the world but didn’t
When it came out the PS2 was a rather cheap DVD player considering it also was a gaming console. I think the PS3 was among the cheaper if not the cheapest bluray player when it was released. And I found pretty cool that my ps1 was able to play audio cds with a neat interface.
kubiiii··on Nuon, the gaming chip that nearly changed the world but didn’t
It had a competitor, the Commodore CDTV (basically an amiga). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_CDTV Pretty cool machine, CD rom drives were sparse in 91.
kubiiii··on Anti-Uber Taxi Protest Blocks Access to Paris’s Roissy Airport
I'll try next time I go to Greece, thanks for the tip. I was amazed at how cheap and easy to find taxi are in Greece. Add the evaluation on top of that (with the app you mention) : all problems solved without Uber's help. You need to put some pressure on taxis to get a correct service, either competition or evaluation (= competition with peers). Otherwise you end up with France's situation.
kubiiii··on Top-CEO Pay Isn’t Driven By Talent, New Study Says
Then just base the hourly CEO wage a multiple of the lowest hourly wage a sub sub sub contractor makes when working for the company. Including developping countries workers.

kubiiii··on Rental America: Why the poor pay $4,150 for a $1,500 sofa (2014)
Spot on I think. But are those fears 100 % irrational? Weatlthy people can build their own furniture with old wood skids, their neighbours will never raise an eyebrow. Try doing that if you are poor. You'll get child protection in no time.
