kubiiii··on People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts
You would still be able to attribute a contribution to the visitor of the secret link. What lacks for a longer use is the ability to recover a lost secret url.
kubiiii··on People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts
Well I somehow expected a better score for your top user. But many games scores were totally unexpected. Sorry for England by the way.

It's great to hear from you again. When I saw the feature on nospronos, I thought that maybe your authentification strategy was not giving good enough results. Sounds like I was wrong.

Did you try to know why they wanted a real account in the first place? Was it because they kept loosing their secret URL? If yes, a resend feature via email would have done the trick.

Anyway kudos for the website, we are having great funs with our (mostly wrong) predictions.

Did you try to see how close from reality have been your best user?

kubiiii··on Sndtst: 8-bit video game music
Great sounding. I can only imagine the work behind this soundtrack!
kubiiii··on Sndtst: 8-bit video game music
There are so many fine music pieces trapped in video games, from composers no one will ever hear of (with notable exceptions). Check battle of olympus "name entry" (sic). Ok its a very simple tune, but that reminds me of François de Roubaix. Battle of Olympus is famous for its soundtrack but you can hardly find anything on the composer.
kubiiii··on Sndtst: 8-bit video game music
Mute city, classic.

Thanks for sharing. Apart from the surge of nostalgia, anyone should listen to the streets of rage soundtrack (1991). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discography_of_the_Streets_of_R... I used to play the game just to listen to the music. It might sound old fashioned now but it was incredible back then.

Pro tip : when dealing with the idea that there are many people better than you realize that you are better than them for thinking that, and if they do to, you still are better for being thinking that they think that too. A few recursions later you are the brightest guy in the world!

Hey wait, you can't be, I am. Ok it used to work when I was 8 or 10, doesnt work anymore.

kubiiii··on Boy, 9, creates library in his front yard. City, stupid, shuts it down.
Same in France, and they are always full of books. People like this kind of social experience and there are very few abuses. I have not checked if the overal quality of the books tend to go down after a few months ending up with yellow pages.
kubiiii··on EBay Valet
Local smaller valets would be something nice, since as a seller and buyer on ebay I enjoy the occasional local delivery of an item which spares the hassles, pollution and the costs of shipping. You can come accross assholes too but that's part of the charm.
kubiiii··on People (understandably) hate to register
I might miss something, but why is a password and account management page required for sending out email alerts? I imagine it is because the logged user can simply check boxes to enable alerts on a specific product rather than inputing his email adress once again but the hassle is minimal with autofill.
kubiiii··on People (understandably) hate to register
Storing emails would be a convenient way to send the link if the user did not send it from the registration page or lost it in the meantime. As a user I would love seeing this kind of identification and would probably set a email account only used to recover links and avoid sharing my main email account.

Nice work by the way.

Same for the quite advanced Alesis IO dock.

kubiiii··on Facebook Hidden Friends Vulnerability?
HN, 1492. Christopher Columbus discovers America. HN user comment : pretty misleading title, large parts of America are most probably not discovered yet. Joke aside, I've seen far worse titles than this one.
kubiiii··on You shouldn’t use a spreadsheet for important work
Maybe the problem with Excel is that errors are more likely to stay under the radar. You can refer to the wrong cell, extend formulas with relative reference where it should be absolute (or the opposite) whithout noticing. When programming logical errors will more often lead to fatal errors upon running the program.

If anything, it's more a matter of using Excel correctly. Tools like slate for excel make it easier to audit spreadsheet especially other people's.

kubiiii··on Stop Leaning In. Put Down Your IPhone. And HELP ME.
The main argument is that its more likely to hurt your loved ones with your own weapons.
kubiiii··on How to write your name on the moon
Great read. I thought that maybe it would be even more impossible to project the text on the moon with a geostationary moon projector. I heard that making a geostationary moon satellite is tricky, adding to the benefits of this solution.
kubiiii··on My Open Wireless Network (2008)
It's a way to share an Internet access while requiring proper authentification of your guests, so that you will not be responsible for their behaviour.
kubiiii··on Soylent 1.0 arrives at Ars: We mix it up and slurp it down
I think it was the preparation time, not the cooking time. You can prepare a vegetable soup from raw vegetables in less than 15 minutes. With some training you can do that in 5 minutes. You'll need an extra 30 minutes simmering though but no more work after preparation unless you want it mixed. You really can't overcook a vegetable soup. You can even keep it a couple of days in the pan without it getting sour. It's a hassle free meal.

But you are right, the truth lies between 15 minutes and an hour.

kubiiii··on Soylent 1.0 arrives at Ars: We mix it up and slurp it down
You are right, one should consider preparation time per serving. In your example something like 2 to 3' per serving which is more than reasonable.

When our life became busier (young kids + work), we started to cook 2 hours or so every week end, several recipes at a time. We order vegetables from a local producer (no fancy app, just a excel sheet) on thursday, get them early on saturday, and then cook stews, soups, meals that will feed us for the rest of the week. This requires some planification and organization but makes the whole cooking time argument irrelevant.

The other thing that bothers me with soylent enthusiasts is that they seem to disregard how the ingredients are sourced and their environnemental costs. The website's FAQ "From what is it made" links to the nutrition facts.

kubiiii··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
This other infraction is also clearly mentionned in the lawyer letter.
kubiiii··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
You might have a point. Imagine that I am ashamed at having been ashamed, and I'm often ashamed at french being ashamed for random reasons. Maybe we have too high expectations.
kubiiii··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
You have a point, but even if the author rebranded his website, he would still violate the TOS when providing direct links to listings (and maybe when scraping the website but this is not clearly forbidden in the TOS). The discussion is mostly about this (I think).
kubiiii··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
It was more about the TOS than the lawyer letter. People from all around the world get to be ashamed by their lawyers.
kubiiii··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
There is no official API for Leboncoin, neither alert option, explaining the creation of the op website.
kubiiii··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
This is our craiglist. And they also have the craiglist of many other countries. The website op made crawls leboncoin and other websites to look for specific items for people. The letter mentions both the use of a "closely" related name and the linking of listings as in violation of the TOS.
kubiiii··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
Salut confrère Bordelais! The thing is that with 24 M+ listings and a free basic service, no one will ever be able to compete. Maybe alternatives would be possible if limited to a specific area.

The weak spot of leboncoin is that you need to pay a stranger before getting your stuff. There is a non negligible portion of scam.

If you want a hand...

kubiiii··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
I'm ashamed to be french when I see this kind of horse shit. The internet is not compatible with their TOS.
