kubiiii··on Ask HN: Gaming with one arm
Pretty much any rts even if keyboards have practical shortcuts. Some rpg too. I'm playing shadowrun dragonfall with only the mouse, awesome game (rpg with turn based combats, bargain price). But its very cool from you to try to come out with a solution for your friend. It would be useful mostly for fps shooters or rpg.
kubiiii··on Cool-retro-term: A terminal emulator which mimics the old cathode display
Better resolution and frames per second than modern games :)
kubiiii··on Halfbike
I kinda like it, and I don't get all the negative comments. I've been a user of folding bikes for a couple of years and, while easier to store/get into buildings with/carry around, they are still quite heavy, tricky to fold, and bulky.

Strida nailed that a few years ago, even if they are not as efficient as a proper bike (while some folding bikes are). This halfbike would probably be ok (if cheaper) for shorter rides and for rides that requires walking every now and then or indoor rides.

I hope he has another account to post mildly relevant/interesting stuff.
kubiiii··on iPhone 6 Plus bending in pockets
Maybe the bending is a consequence of a better than average shock proof design. Not an apple fan boy here but I find hard to believe that a top selling phone would go on the market without extensive mechanical testing.
kubiiii··on This email may be worth millions of dollars in sales
Right. The striking thing is that op's decision to choose the more expensive solution is now both confirmed by the fact that the solution was better because more expensive and by the fact that it works.

An email from the cheaper company explaining why they were cheaper could have had the exact same effect.

kubiiii··on Dremel Releases a Mass-Market 3D Printer
3d printing is a way to extend a product's life. But I think it will prove useful for a repair guy/technician rather than for a hobbyist. Making small series of spares for a unsupported product is profitable vs used spares market. One example are vintage synthesizers. There is such demand for some spares that synths are being dismantled rather than repaired. Sometimes the upper C key (which is unique on a keyboard) can be sold for 50 bucks or more.
kubiiii··on Apple Just Uploaded a U2 Album to Your iPhone and iPad – And Seriously, WTF
How can you hate the weezer buddy holly clip which came with windows 95? It was by far the best file on the windows 95 cd.
kubiiii··on Apple Just Uploaded a U2 Album to Your iPhone and iPad – And Seriously, WTF
I haven't checked yet but what I know is that if the album was pushed onto my ipad, my bluetooth speaker will autoplay it everytime I turn it on. Anticipating edit : I know there might be parameters to avoid that wether on the ipad or on the speaker but keeping a clean itunes was the minimum hassle solution I adopted.
kubiiii··on Show HN: MealDays – Meal planner for my wife
Or maybe op's wife order meals and op cooks.
kubiiii··on Nearly All U.S. Home Depot Stores Hit By Credit Card Theft
Contactless payment is more and more widespread in france for purchases < € 20.
kubiiii··on Logitech K480 – Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard
Existing mac keyboard. Interesting alternative though.
kubiiii··on Show HN: RandomStartup.org – Refresh the page to discover another startup
Same here. A generator was posted a few days ago and it took me a couple of startups to realize this was not a (far) better generator. Great initiative though.
kubiiii··on Ask HN: I have to analyze 100M lines of Java – where do I start?
Why not (sounds easy eh?) go one application at a time? Are there interactions between apps? Maybe you can start with documenting all the interaction (~ api). Then you'd go deeper in each app.
kubiiii··on Bitcoin’s Earliest Adopter Is Cryonically Freezing His Body to See the Future
Plus what companies from 50 years ago are still around?
kubiiii··on Ask HN: Is it reasonable to cover your webCam?
Pretty useful to play games designed for the 8086 on a 286 or 386. Alley cat with the turbo was more like alley cat on meth.
kubiiii··on Google's questionnaire response to Article 29 Working Party
It depends on each url popularity, I doubt any of the requests deals with a ressource you would find on the 500 th page of a search result.
kubiiii··on Hacking Online Polls and Other Ways British Spies Seek to Control the Internet
Apparently UK government does.
kubiiii··on How Music Affects Your Productivity | Business + Innovation
Great opportunity to share some of our listening habits and playlists while working. What seems to work for me go from ambient (boards of canada, tycho, you should really try rone Tohu bohu) to IDM like Aphex Twin (the newly released caustic window LP is great for working). Soft shoegaze like slowdive or soft psychedelic folk like mazzy star does the trick. I think that neo classical music such as Max Richter's is a good choice for working either. But I want to find out more!

Can't really measure productivity impact but it does seem to lower distraction and to even output over a long time span.

kubiiii··on How We Hire
I really suck at pretending I am not. Well I am more touchy about wrong culture and wrong fit than about culture fit.
kubiiii··on How We Hire
Looks like I skipped that part, thanks. I would love to have a snippnet of the questions though.
kubiiii··on How We Hire
"Culture fit is really important."

We could discuss hours about culture fit but this might reveal an uncontroled bias on your (remarkable) bias free hiring process because it is highly subjective. How do you ensure a recruiter assesses culture fit correctly (i.e not by the way someone dresses for example or just by ensuring that the candidate looks sufficiently like him).

kubiiii··on GPS and Relativity
Cors data is limited to the USA, we used RGP data, a network of ground stations maintained by the IGN which is analogous to Cors. The IGS gathers data throughout the world to enable global applications but it looks like the data is more complete when accessed through national networks.

I worked a few years ago on precision guidance. I was supposed to assess the performance of automatically guided tractors. Sub centimetric guidance on 4 tons huge tractors was pretty tricky to test. On what exactly did you work?

kubiiii··on GPS and Relativity
Thanks. This work is interesting http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00444081 Unfortunately the main thesis is in french, however there are included articles in english and lots of references. I am currently working on a project using a high density GPS stations network we deployed in the south east of France. We have had good results for nowcasting and to map in 3d the atmospheric weather content. No publication yet though.

2d maps of rainfall have also been derived from interpolated GSM antennas, using the signal loss.

kubiiii··on GPS and Relativity
It does, in fact GPS positioning error, derived from fixed GPS stations, is often used as an input for weather forecast models like WRF. The error is closely binded to the atmospheric water content. Using the different azimuths from the GPS constellation you can even build up a 3d representation of the water content on different layers of the atmosphere.
kubiiii··on Show HN: Pangoly – Build your shiny new PC
Indeed. But alerts would be a nice addition to expert mode anyway. You can't build a PC with a processor that does not fit in the socket, expert or not. Pre filtered list of motherboards or cpu based on selected cpu or motherboards would be nice. Anyway, great website.
kubiiii··on Developers: stop re-AOLizing the web!
Don't put a bad restaurant review on yelp if you don't know how to cook. I understand that the difference here is that the reviewer is also a dev, but it does not change much since he put this up as a user.
kubiiii··on Paint.Net 4.0 is now available
There is a built in workaround in word itself : pasting the huge picture, adjusting size, cut & paste as PNG.
kubiiii··on [dead]
Pretty hard to come out with a TL;DR because of the cumulative nature of this text.
kubiiii··on People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts
This explains the nospronos name then. Sorry, je comprends vite mais il faut m'expliquer longtemps :)* Finger crossed for the french squad then.
