ktallett··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
We seem to have become a culture where we unrealistically believe we have a solution. The big issue with many who label themselves as entrepreneurs is that often the problem doesn't exist. You end up networking with people who are less aware and also don't recognise that the problem doesn't exist and then motivate you even more. Then you have funders who rarely have expertise so they will believe you when you say it will change the world which basically all the time it won't.

Now I'm not of the view people shouldn't try to change the world but why should that be fixated on a business, why not a community effort, why not research, why not charity based, they all provide you with a range of skills. We have got a saturation of those starting businesses in every industry (especially mine which is quantum computing) and most have a poor idea or a repetitive idea or an idea that so unthought out it can't go anywhere.

(I will say less should go backpacking. Travelling on the whole now has become a distraction from life instead of a discovery. You are better taking that year or 6 months and spending it on something you love to do. That will show you who you are more than visiting some of the poorest nations on earth.)

ktallett··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
It can be viewed that way or it can be viewed that large companies have destroyed smaller companies by utilising slave labour and grey area practices to get the market share and then they are the only employers left for many.
ktallett··on The first search engine for Internet-connected devices
The advert that states more than 1000 universities and 89% of the fortune 100 companies are signed up. Is that meaning there is a decision maker that has signed up on behalf of the university or company and is using it in an official role, or has someone signed up that stated they happened to work at a uni or one of those companies or used their work or uni email to sign up?
ktallett··on My favorite nonfiction books about cults, scams, and schemes
As an academic, I wouldn't like to state papers are any different in regards to reliability of sources. They will just be testimonies and author viewpoint.
ktallett··on My favorite nonfiction books about cults, scams, and schemes
If we are talking about scams an obvious one is Bad Blood, about the Theranos scam.
ktallett··on Iranian hackers shut down UK power plant for 4 days
It is either the fact most major infrastructure in the UK seems to be run on computer systems introduced by a man with no knowledge and struggles to turn on a computer. Or it is the start of a UK government attempt to reduce freedoms by stating look there are naughty terrorists out there that will do harm to the UK if we don't restrict programs and usage of systems.

I imagine the former, but it will be used for the latter.

ktallett··on I Dream of Quieter Computing
Often we are missing something in that we don't need to change what we use quite so regularly. We can learn to enjoy tech of the past and still find it useful today. It would both be better for the planet and satisfy our realisation that constant upgrades and changes aren't always needed or even better.

Does a Canon S90 suddenly take bad photos or take photos that can't be printed? No, of course not, and that's a decade old.

Can you still write on a Thinkpad X201? Yes of course. If anything, that keyboard is far better.

ktallett··on I like 'em thick: an apology to my English teachers
I had this incident with the Miraikan in Tokyo. I visited it in the summer of 2017 and just seeing the fascinating future I knew I had to be a part of it. The week after I got home I decided to apply late to University to finally take that step. A PhD and lots of research later and I'm finally getting papers accepted that are planning the future I want to see.
ktallett··on Japan tried to build an operating system for the world, the US intervened
This is a tricky one as it's similar to Amiga OS and Be OS where it's obviously so forward thinking but as other comments state that doesn't automatically lead to uptake.

Of a similar ilk, I always felt the MSX base deserved a higher usage rate in the rest of the world, PC engine as a console too. Neither really took off elsewhere.

ktallett··on Japan's Gen X workers are struggling
They don't buy the same as before internally either. Numerous industries are propped up by tourist cash whilst many locals struggle financially.
ktallett··on Japan's Gen X workers are struggling
Wages etc are in a far better place in Germany than Japan.
ktallett··on λλ: A Programming Language for Silicon Photonics
Well the logical step would be that you are creating a silicon photonics environment that has comparable input and output to the real world (classical computing) which is always into another system to appropriately input, readout, and feedback into the system. Hence why interaction with the languages that readout and input will involve are essential.
ktallett··on λλ: A Programming Language for Silicon Photonics
I read that but unless they are able to encode construction, input, output, material, and packaging restraints which I'm not sure this does then I can't see the benefit. It's only ever going to be idealised which are realistically unrealizable.

A key focus of silicon photonics is that it has to interact with classical systems to do readout and input right now so it would be logical to design with that built in.

ktallett··on λλ: A Programming Language for Silicon Photonics
I am curious why develop a new language instead of building a library for an existing language. What are the benefits as I didn't see this in the paper? Can it interact with other languages?
ktallett··on Japan's Gen X workers are struggling
There are many societies where we can apply your description yet we could still say the economy is failing. In particular many in the former socialist Eastern Europe.

I would be curious what your description of a high quality of life is. As I don't believe that for one of the great global powers is what is considered a high quality of life.

Firstly, the worth of the wage locally has dropped by approximately a third in just a few years. I worked there for 7/8 years in recent times and can see such a change from then to now in my colleagues and now friends lifestyle. Most are significantly cutting back in their life in some way.

Secondly openly it looks as if very few go hungry but that's not the case. Pensioners, those with disabilities, and many single parent families are really struggling to put food on the table for all in Japan. For many others, I don't count eating ramen regularly, which is effectively a student diet (also because of poverty) as being satiated.

ktallett··on Careless People (2025)
PARTIAL SPOILER//

It's an interesting book with not unsurprising events considering it's about Facebook and Zucks, but I do find her slightly deluded in her outlook especially at the start. She is part of the problem in this situation and seems to not recognise the level she is an issue in the work being done.

We already know Facebook is doing a lot of shady, morally wrong at best activities, but being a part of that and framing it primarily as it's others not me is not for me.

ktallett··on Kakoune Code Editor
I go either end of editor. The simple in Cot editor on Mac although I now run Linux so I had to develop my own version of cot editor for it as I missed it too much. If not that or on a low powered device I often go neovim.
ktallett··on There's No Reason to Buy a New Phone Anymore
The same with a laptop (what the hell is a copilot Laptop when it's at home? It can run software?). Most people can cope just fine on any laptop that was above a certain price point from the last 10 years. The only issue has been developers have just been forgetting about resource usage and increasing demand with their software which causes some devices to be a little less speedy.

If the EU can force battery replacement then I suspect laptop sales would drop greatly, which for the world would be a good thing

ktallett··on Japan's Gen X workers are struggling
Japan's economy has collapsed. The value of wages in relation to the rest of the world is dropping like a stone. So many who used to be able to take a yearly overseas trip potentially won't be able to for the next decade or two unless things change.
ktallett··on Things That Used to Be Normal and Are Now a Luxury
The clothing quality issue is in manufacturing and reducing the amount of fabric and thread used to make items. Seams are the bare minimum now etc. Likewise trainers soles have stopped using rubber and moved to far less durable synthetic materials.
ktallett··on Suspecting court of using AI, man injected prompts in filings to try to win case
Your point seems to be, if you break down a task into infinitly small points AI can do any task, but then it's the human doing the work and not the AI. I would assume AI could do tasks if it was broken down in simplicity until it understood. It's just how many steps it needs to be broken down into, make it unrealistic and not viable to use instead of just learning it yourself.
ktallett··on Suspecting court of using AI, man injected prompts in filings to try to win case
Considering AI is just and can only be a frequency analyser, it won't become better. It can guess based on percentages but thats all it can ever do, no matter how much AI companies looking for endless growth wish to tell you otherwise. Therefore AI can't and won't ever be able to do nuance cases.
ktallett··on Suspecting court of using AI, man injected prompts in filings to try to win case
It would be important to add as it removes the proof of competency of the lawyer if using AI to aid the case.
ktallett··on Suspecting court of using AI, man injected prompts in filings to try to win case
I think it should be a case whereby if you use AI and there are flaws in your prosecution or defence, it should be thrown out. This is another situation whereby nuance is not handled by AI.
ktallett··on Bundesliga's 50+1 ownership rule permissible under antitrust laws
It's the best sports ownership system and still doesn't reduce competitiveness really as the league regularly has some of the best players in the world (Olise and Kane last year). The clubs that are most vocally against it such as Hannover, are also not really investing anything of note. I suspect the main issue is that they can't run it for profit by buying young, selling, and then just routinely asset stripping.
ktallett··on Jason Arday, ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row, found dead
It isn't really clear what was truth and what wasnt tbh and even if so this is most certainly not the first person to lie to a high position. It is an open secret that a former university chancellor in the uk copied his thesis. He didnt get this treatment. I am also curious where the racism claim comes from?
ktallett··on Dear people who work at the airport
Oh the last minute gate change is always ridiculous. I never find it happens at really busy airports either. It's always at the airports that have around 40 gates but only around 6 flights an hour.
ktallett··on Credibility is the barrier to entry in silicon
You sell the use case and support.
ktallett··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
The issue is that these conscriptions are rarely for the benefit of the person and are usually for the benefit of the nation. They are usually cheap labour or just bodies to put where you need a physical presence but no real skill. If the conscription paid the appropriate wage for the role, absolutely that would be a great idea and help those who were coming out of difficult situations such as foster and poor home life too.
ktallett··on How Blackwing Pencils are Made [video]
Thank you! I should have explained more in-depth what I meant. I forget sometimes this is Hacker News and not, everyone has exactly the same interests as me news. I did have quite a few of the originals till I used them and there is such a difference that I had to switch entirely as I just found the new ones weren't that close to allow me to use them in the same way. So I would prefer to completely change method.
