London, Hong Kong and somehow California*.
Often a Contrarian.
The unwritten rule of HN: You do not criticise The Rusted Holy Grail and the Riscy Silver Bullet.
Interest: JPEG-XL, AAC-LC, VVC / LCEVC, Patent Free AVC, FreeBSD, TigerBeetle, ZFS, DTrace, Vitess, Vespa, Objective-C, Java, Zig, Odin, Crystal, Ada, Ruby, Graal, Rails, 5G/6G, OpenPOWER, Apple/China, Supply Chain / Manufacturing, Retail.
@Google: Why No Pixel Phone in Hong Kong?
Is this 1800 buildings? Or 1800 sites? How can there be so many DC being built concurrently? Why are they not 180 or at best 18? Where are all these new appetite coming from? It can't be all AI because if only a few players are training and centralised we would have a few big AI DC only. Instead these are like the edge.
I can't quite wrap my head around these number. So do we have 18,000+ DC in US currently being built? No wonder why people are against DC building.
This isn't so much about Bun or Node.js any more. It is the battleground for AI and non-AI coding.
For most, they are still waiting for official release so they could make their own judgment, the problem is that it is still not released. I guess we should just wait a little longer.
Had these DATA and message been tossed around more people wouldn't be so frustrated and would be more understanding.
I am also interested if EVC Baseline profile will become patent free soon. Given it is built on top of AVC.

The next 10 years of computing is going to be VERY interesting. May be not just computing but everything, an even wider reach and disruption than iPhone.
Unlike iPhone / Smartphone which I thought was obvious, a computer or web browser in your pocket that basically extends the internet to anywhere. Local Model AI in our computer or pocket that controls other things opens seemingly unlimited possibilities.
I initially thought it was going to be 15-20 years time frame, with perhaps a bubble burst in between. But development of both software and hardware is accelerating.
But it keep explaining what El Niño and Super El Niño and how it develops without giving me any context of how strong it will be.
And while things has died down a lot in the past few years, there is a reason why I wrote the line.
"You do not criticise The Rusted Holy Grail and the Riscy Silver Bullet."
I mean that is not even 10 page view per second. We are not living in 2006. Actually even in 2006 Apache with static page would have been able to handle that on a small VPS. And that is excluding CDN.
It is not that working 365 days is hard. It is the job in today's world are very different, Muti tasking, context switching and anything but simple even in the lowest rank.
This is mentally tiring and I have also wondered if it is a recent thing. My argument is that cutting cost over the past 20 - 30 years meant what used to be a 5 person's job is now a 1 to 2 person job.
They actually have ESC key with a later update. Although I thought it was too late. They should have done it the next year after first Touch Bar was introduced. I believe that is not because product designer don't want to change but some part of the supply chain / operation don't want to waste money on new design so quickly.
Now we are at 20PB in 4U. Or 5PB in 1U.
This is using Solidigm D5-P5336 122TB drive which was announced in 2024. We expect to have 256TB [1] by end of 2026 based on 200 This would put this at 40PB or 10PB per 1U!
These are all based on ~250 layer NAND. SK Hynix intend to ship 375 NAND by end of 2026, with 480 to 600 between 2028 and 2030+. i.e We could see another doubling of capacity by 2030.
In 2020, Backblaze reached 1EB, or 1000PB. What used thousands of PODs, and hundreds of racks. By 2030 it be could be fitted into just 1 Rack. The magic number is 625TB per drive, we will reach 1EB per Rack.

I want the iteration of the product that is in its 2nd or 3rd official iteration. Where you have a lot of learning done and battle tested. Preferably without the backward compatibility to create something truly beautiful. Would it be perfect? Of course not. But it will be Great.
I so wish ARM had some counter offering. They might as well give away their their low end design for free.
2nd most useful feature is vibrate alarm.
Telling time not even that important on my list.
I don't do payment with watch. Since I think the motion of making my wrist to the counter is awkward. Since we are always on our phone it doesn't make it much simpler.
There isn't one simply because there was't ( yet ) a market for it. Now we have, we also have SLC and may see a come back of Z-NAND ( Samsung specially tuned SLC ).
With the insane money going around AI. Hardware industry is finally enjoying some decent profits and can afford to spend more on R&D. Looking at PCIe 7.0 with 100M IOPS and 100*GB/s next year.
So this is another nice direction which is hope is part of John's big plan.
On another note: A lot of these personnel changes is happening under the last phase of Tim Cook as CEO. I seriously doubt this is Tim's plan given his past 10 - 12 years of management restructure and HR. My guess is likely the new structure and people are picked by John while happening ahead of time under Tim to speed up the whole transaction. And it is likely something John requested.
If that is the case, this is another win of my vote for John.
In hindsight, it is great that they milk it for an additional 12 years. But the part I still don't understand is their insistence to not break out Games into its own Game Store. Gaming represent ~80% of the App Store Revenue. They could have kept it at 30%. While lowering the rest to more reasonable trucks as suggested here.
Instead they keep dragging it on and make the pricing structure extremely complicated with different "program".
But even offline there are huge differences, say Visa / Mastercard EMV and Suicia's Felica in Japan, where the whole transaction finish in 150ms.
There were previously some work where they try to get it down to 50ms, I don't know if they are still working on it or has abandoned it.
I guess I am the only one excited to see this.
Because it is decelerating growth. There is a reason why we use YoY percentage in annual and financial reporting.
I am 100% sure this won't happen in 10 years time. At least not on a $200 SSD. But I wouldn't be surprised if it ran on $1K to $2K HBF SSD. It will still be better than a $50K Rack.
