Yes. It's annoying with the subscription if you need it sporadically. Also, only after producing the video I figured that with the AI Avatar (as well with the TTS voice) I am a bit in a vendor lock situation. Switching to another service would mean losing the character and consistency.

On the other hand maybe just keeping the brand (logos) would be enough if I decide to move to move away from HeyGen for some reason.

I finally made a product demo video — without spending much or showing my face.

I’m a solo dev. A while ago, I built a Jira Service Desk app that turned into a small side project with a few paying customers. For years, I wanted to make a demo video to help explain what it does, but I kept putting it off. Mostly because I didn’t really know how to start — and I didn’t want to spend hundreds on software.

Last week, I finally did it using free-tier of the following tools: HeyGen for AI avatar, ElevenLabs for voice, CapCut for editing, and the Windows Snipping Tool for screen recording.

If like me, you’re doing everything yourself — building, marketing, support — this setup might save you some time. Happy to share how I did it.

I built a niche Jira Service Desk app a few years ago. It wasn’t meant to be a business, but over time it turned into a small side hustle.

For years, I wanted to create a demo video but I kept stalling. Not because of luck of ideas, but because I didn’t have a clear plan. I’d get distracted browsing stock footage or experimenting with AI tools like Stable Diffusion, hoping something would click.

Things finally clicked when I came across a solid tutorial. Looking back, it was probably just a clever ad for Camtasia, but it did the trick. It helped me focus, plan things out properly (based on a template provided) and I ended up putting the whole thing together using (almost) nothing but free tools.

Curious what you think! Happy to share more about the tools I used if you're interested.
