krychu··on Perl is dying
Perl won’t be extinct anytime soon due to its quality. Those who know it treasure it for the unmatched performance. Performance of turning ideas into reality. Ideas way beyond sysadmin and reporting stuff. Perl as a language, ecosystem, and community is well and kickin’. My 2 cents.
krychu··on Germany's Vanishing Monasteries
< Church is an institution.

This is incorrect. Its original meaning is "assembly", "meeting" and refers to a group of people more than a building/denomination/organization: https://www.compellingtruth.org/definition-church.html.

krychu··on Germany's Vanishing Monasteries
It doesn’t turn people away since your characterization of priests and church is inaccurate. I agree there are anomalies and outliers but your description suggests these might be norms. Also, I believe people don’t conflate what their belief is at the core with what a particular priest does.
krychu··on Germany's Vanishing Monasteries
Church is also the community of people coming together, it’s nuns and priests going on missions to countries in need, it’s priests doing Sunday service for people who believe. Have you excluded these from your definition of Church or do you think these are also cancer?
krychu··on Understanding the working of X11 from the ground up (2017)
I haven't used linux as my primary OS for many years now. If not X11 or Wayland, what other alternative? Is there some other relevant development going on?
krychu··on Understanding the working of X11 from the ground up (2017)
Does he mean he's no longer working/interested in writing about these topics, and moved to other things?

Or does he mean he abandoned these techs and moved to something other alternatives?

If the latter, I wonder what these other alternatives are?

krychu··on The human body is already close to thermal limits in many regions
If you remove dotted predictions from your comic it suggests the temperature increase in the last 2000 years is about 0.3 - 0.4 Celsius degrees (also supported here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holocene_Temperature...). This is pretty stable and is not matching past fluctuations, which are more accurately depicted here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holocene_Temperature....

Another thing is that we're assuming that the current climate conditions on earth are becoming less optimal, which is unsupported. The current climate might actually be better. There are many examples, both negative but also positive, of the climate change.

krychu··on The human body is already close to thermal limits in many regions
How much time does Earth need for one full rotation?
krychu··on Writing a game engine in pure C: The Graphic Initialization
Same here. Felt cheated when I saw SDL mentioned :)

krychu··on The easiest way to keep your web apps accessible: Just use text
I don’t see how deleting action is a link. Why not use a button which fires xhr and injects return message into the doc?
krychu··on Cost of a Join
Enums are not relations but data types as indicated in the first paragraph here: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/datatype-enum..., and by the related command ‘CREATE TYPE ...’.

Relations are commonly used when referring to tables and views.

What do you gain by calling types relations while introducing confusion and diminishing practicality of the relation concept?

krychu··on Blender is testing PeerTube after YouTube blocks their videos worldwide
If money is the criterion of being a customer then they are one by driving traffic to other monetized videos, via recommended feed, or via follow up searches, that would otherwise not happen.

Anyone having a YT channel will tell that ‘suggested video’ is a dominant traffic source so it’s not an edge case.

In sum, YT was already making money thanks to Blender videos.

krychu··on RSS is undead
A self-plug, I built a simple RSS reader after Google shut down theirs, which I was using on regular basis. Perhaps someone will find it useful: https://readdu.com
krychu··on System Shock 1 source code released under GPL
Great, thanks for sharing. I’m definitely gonna take a closer look at these. Now imagine that the effort went into advancing the original sources rather than rewriting things from scratch.

I think that many companies would agree to release sources of abandonware games upon appropriate request from a fan base community, with the goal of preserving, maintaining and advancing the original title. In fact this is strategically beneficial action for the company, not from a financial perspective, but you can imagine some extra attention and buzz being created if the game was to be revived.

It’s possible that many companies are not even aware of devoted communities around their older titles.

krychu··on System Shock 1 source code released under GPL
Agree, it’s been always surprising to me that companies don’t just release sources after say 10 years.

I wish for Fallout 1 and 2 sources. I think there would be strong community interest in hacking it.

krychu··on Show HN: Readdu – an RSS reader with Markdown (major overhaul)
Yes, Markdown is used for organising feeds: grouping them under headers which later appear as navigation in the main feed.

Linen is now retro 8-)

krychu··on Python 3 in Science: the great migration has begun
> The main reason for Python 2 users to not switch to Python 3 is the lack of motivation/killer features. We need to therefore be more proactive in encouraging people to switch to Python 3 by (a) making sure that any new users are always directed to the latest Python 3 version, and (b) releasing, in the near future, new major versions of packages for Python 3 only, while maintaining long term bugfix support for Python 2 versions.

That's the evil right there. Read carefully what's written.

"The main reason for Python 2 users to not switch to Python 3 is the lack of motivation/killer features". Which says that users are familiar with what Python 3 has to offer but consider it not good enough. Why would you then jump to a conclusion that you have to be more proactive in directing people to switch to Python 3. Or even better, to stop adding features to what 81% of people use.

krychu··on Full text search in milliseconds with PostgreSQL
Thanks, that's useful to know. I thought that your issues with speed in the past were due to using a different approach to searching in PostgreSQL than the one you described in the post.

I wonder if there are any specific limitations to search performance in PostgreSQL stemming from its underlying data model and structures or could it possibly reach similar performance and scale as say Solr (or Luecene for that matter) without too much of an overhaul. Just thinking single node here.

krychu··on How to Build a Unicorn and Walk Away with Nothing
That's exactly what I was thinking.

"With the $10 million, Richard rents space in SoMa on a seven-year lease, hires lots more people, and within a few months he is able to roll out the minimally viable product to test the market."

There was also $1 million of prior angel investment. So total of $11 million raised before having an MVP to test the market. Is this really representative scenario?

krychu··on Full text search in milliseconds with PostgreSQL
> This query takes about 50ms!

Would be useful to know how many rows you had in the table (?)

krychu··on Show HN: Tech.eu Radar, an online database for all things European tech
That's pretty cool. Is this data available somewhere in a digestible format if I may ask. Some interesting analysis could be run on that data.
krychu··on Show HN: Readdu – the last RSS / Feed reader you'll ever use
Thanks for the kind words. I fear that tabular comparisons are poor at capturing the overall experience with the product, which was one of the main motivations to create Readdu. Some other readers feel clunky, filled with lots of controls and UI switches, lots of visual noise, and also require you to click around much (marking stories "READ", dragging them to folders etc.). How do I explain that in a table? ;)
krychu··on Show HN: Readdu – the last RSS / Feed reader you'll ever use
Hey guys,

This is my first submission here and I wanted to give you few more details on the project. My main goal for Readdu was to build it with "as little design as possible". I wanted to give prominence to content, push UI away to the second plan, and to remove the slavery of marking stories "READ". I also wanted to make feed management easy.

The result is an RSS reader with a markdown-like editor, single-focus stream, "ambient" UI, automatically decreasing counters, and one-click catalog of feeds. I hope you enjoy it!
