kristianbrigman··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
Is there an example where you can explain how the deflation actually led to economic success? The above feel like very distant correlations more than a result.

'prices dropping' often includes labor as well, since currency is primarily a medium of exchange.

What countries did you have in mind? (Haven’t heard that before, would like to investigate)

Interesting… I had looked here: https://www.thebalancemoney.com/us-deficit-by-year-3306306

(quick google search, first result)

Which seems to show a different story. But looks like there is a lot of analysis on the numbers which can be done? (Eg I saw something in your article about ‘Biden will contribute 1.9T to the debt by 2031’.. even if he hadn’t gotten reelected, he wouldn’t be in office in 2031, so this includes the long-term effects of policies?)

Maybe, but it’s not like it hasn’t happened before… Clinton (yes, a democrat!) campaigned on balancing the budget, and iirc it actually was for a few years. In his case I don’t think taxes changed much either direction.

If said fence was across a road that a school bus was hurtling towards at 60 mph… you’d stop asking these questions and remove it (and maybe put it back after you’ve solved the other emergency).

Several (of the new government) have expressed belief that the government is headed towards a catastrophic debt overload. In their view, emergency relief is necessary.

Not arguing for or against this view, but that seems to be what people voted for.

I am a big fan of Chestertons fence but it doesn’t always apply.

At least officially, the stated goal is to eliminate the deficit, which at least Elon has been warning about lately.

If that holds up (and who knows if it will) I wouldn’t expect any taxes to be cut until the budget is close to balanced.

Maybe more like radical libertarianism?

What’s the advantage of having this as a government agency vs. just an industry association?
kristianbrigman··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
And yet, I bet when you make a trade on craigslist (showing my age :), you meet in a public place where people can see you. Why?
kristianbrigman··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
Alvin Toffler called it back in the 70s (in Future Shock); in there, he thought educated elites would move towards homeschooling, nothing political on his analysis at least (that may match current trend?)
kristianbrigman··on Why do small children in Japan ride the subway alone?
This could just be because people don’t walk in general… that was part of Jane Jacobs’ argument, that basically more people around makes things generally safer. Changes like these tend to be pretty exponential once they start.
kristianbrigman··on Learning Synths
Somewhat true … maybe it’s really a hybrid, subtractive usually includes generating the initial sound to subtract from though (the oscillator) and even basic subtractive synths often have capability there (different waveforms, octaves, PWM, etc)
kristianbrigman··on MIT study explains why laws are written in an incomprehensible style
It's not _written_ by non-coders, but it is _used_ by non-coders who do not always follow the way you expect them to use it...
kristianbrigman··on MIT study explains why laws are written in an incomprehensible style
I'd prefer to keep the separation of powers intact (legislature writes/modifies laws, judiciary can strike them down but can't (or isn't supposed to) make up law... the exchange is not that different between development and QA :)

your process seems reasonable though.

kristianbrigman··on MIT study explains why laws are written in an incomprehensible style
There have been some people pushing for every new law to include a sunset clause, but I don’t know how you could enforce it for new laws.

> When they do 20 takes and pick the "best", there's always a second "best". It's not like you're starting over.

For modern pop music... as i understand it, the 'best' is a compilation of the 20 takes. There isn't necessarily a 'second best' take to choose. You could comp the takes differently, but i don't know anyone in any field who likes intentionally doing a job less than what they think is the 'best'.

kristianbrigman··on An oral history of "We Built This City," the worst song of all time (2016)
On a parallel track, I've been continually amazed at how even as someone interested in broad musical categories, how many bands I've never heard of who were 'mainstream' popular in some way - maybe not top 40 radio but at least on some radio somewhere, or were #1 at some point in some not completely niche genre. there's just so much music out there, even so much good music.
kristianbrigman··on The decline of the working musician
where are good places to find live venues/shows, especially when traveling?

i recently discovered bandsintown which has been really useful, but doesn't cover everything.

kristianbrigman··on Finding a therapist who takes your insurance can be nearly impossible
there is rula: https://www.rula.com

you put in your insurance and location, and they find you a provider.

also, some therapists don't take insurance (or recommend you don't use it) because supposedly if you do, then part of that agreement is that they tell the insurance company your treatment plan, which includes the diagnosis, that may be available to your employer. doctor/patient confidentiality seems like there are some exceptions here.

kristianbrigman··on Tracking supermarket prices with Playwright
My eye doctor recommended wearing “screen glasses”. They are a small prescription (maybe 0.25 or 0.5) with blue blocking. It’s small but it does help; I work on normal glasses at night (so my eyes can rest) and contacts + screen glasses during the day and they are really close.
kristianbrigman··on The case for not sanitising fairy tales
At the time, child sacrifice was apparently common, enough that if a country was in trouble, the populace would demand the king sacrifice his kid to save the country (even shown in scripture … see 2 kings 3:27 though later in time). This was a very _public_ display that this God does not want that.

In short, it wasn’t really a test of either one, it was a public declaration that child sacrifice is bad.

kristianbrigman··on Author Clock: a novel way to tell time
I really like mine, but recommend the larger one - as a clock, you really need to be too close to the smaller one
kristianbrigman··on What happens in the brain to cause depression?
I don’t know if this is even required… from kahneman & tversky (iirc) basically negativity is more ‘visible’ in relationships so that for every negative comment, it requires anywhere from 5 to 20 positive comments to balance it.

So if we assume that negative and positive is amplified equally, and there are even amounts of each, the end result will be pretty negative.

And while this was probably always true, the volume was probably low enough that the connection to your family and tribe were more dominant. Now, the volume from the internet might be more dominant.

kristianbrigman··on A forged Apple employee badge
There were word processors with storage - I can’t remember how they worked but a dedicated typewriter doesn’t mean you can’t also get an electric copy.

Also found this in a quick search, basically an ereader + keyboard: https://getfreewrite.com/products/freewrite-traveler

kristianbrigman··on Man creatively sneaks onto Delta flight, but gets caught
Sure, but it says he made sure to board before the correct passenger… it didn’t alarm for him because he was the first. When the second passenger came through, they would ask them for ID and it would be correct because it was actually them.

kristianbrigman··on Daniel Kahneman has died
That was the whole point of this particular episode… to highlight that ‘accurately’ involves hidden assumptions that you may or may not share with the listener. And then, try to identify if there is a systemic commonality in those hidden assumptions.
kristianbrigman··on Daniel Kahneman has died
It’s mathematically impossible for the set of things who have both properties X and Y, to be larger than the set of things that have property X.
kristianbrigman··on Daniel Kahneman has died
‘More likely’ to be true doesn’t imply they are the only two options. But pulling out these kinds of assumptions (that you heard that limit when it wasn’t explicitly there) is exactly the kinds of things they were trying to discover, partly to make sure to ask better questions.
