krisgenre··on Amazon virtually kills efforts to develop Alexa Skills
Don't know about opening curtains but I have a Deepbot connected to Google Home (now Gemini) and saying "Hey Google, start cleaning at 5.30 PM" works.
krisgenre··on Like Clippy but for the CLI
How is this different from ShellGPT - https://github.com/TheR1D/shell_gpt ?
krisgenre··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
IMHO think its possible that you are disinterested in the task. I am at about the same age and have been increasingly finding it difficult to concentrate on tasks that don't help me learn much.
krisgenre··on Clipboard: Cut, copy, and paste anything, anywhere, all from the terminal
Though not exactly the same, I did create a project for easy sharing of clipboard https://github.com/krishnaraj/oneclipboard. Lost interest after background Clipboard access was restricted in Android 10 or something.
krisgenre··on Zoho's annual revenues surpassed $1B in 2021
Remember, if Google blocks you they'll likely block your personal accounts too.
krisgenre··on JetBrains Research
I switched to intelliJ 7 years ago after trying out Android Studio. I suppose this plus Kotlin is making people more aware of Jetbrains. Back then almost all beginner tutorials used to show Eclipse but that has changed gradually to intelliJ. In fact I can't remember seeing Eclipse in any recent programming videos, its just intelliJ and VSCode everywhere.
krisgenre··on Ask HN: Have you ever inherited a code base you thought was well done?
In my experience I would say ugly code usually becomes a problem after 10+ years. It may be easy to fix bugs but can get quite complicated to implement new features.
krisgenre··on To download from Google Drive, you must enable third party cookies?
AFAIK Firefox is the only browser that does 'persist logs' in dev console right. i.e I get to see the responses of all requests whereas Chrome only shows the current page responses. Chrome has also refused to acknowledge this as a bug.
krisgenre··on Tell HN: Gnome on Wayland Is Amazing
There is a workaround for screen sharing but I couldn't find any for the drag n drop issue.
krisgenre··on Tell HN: Gnome on Wayland Is Amazing
I've been using wayland with Gnome 40 (pop os) for a few months now. Though I can't tell if its better than X11 its definitely not worse. Both seem identical to me except that on wayland drag n drop files into Chrome/Firefox and screen sharing don't seem to work.
krisgenre··on Zero rupee note (2015)
Not just for a job but people also pay (or made to pay) high price to get 'transfers'. If you a are govt. school teacher or doctor you'll likely be posted at a place which is very far from your residence just so that you'll be ready to pay a hefty sum to get transferred to a nearby location.
krisgenre··on Prince of Persia in JavaScript
It must be at least 20+ years since I played this game and yet can remember the controls correctly (up + side arrows to jump) even though I haven't used this combination in any other game since.
krisgenre··on Prince of Persia in JavaScript
Wow! this is too good except for the sound though which seems a bit modern to me.
krisgenre··on Ask HN: Great tools for solo SaaS founders?
How about privacy and terms pages? does one need a lawyer or is there a SaaS service to generate one?
krisgenre··on JEdit – Programmer's Text Editor
JEdit developers themselves use IntelliJ to develop it?

"IntelliJ IDEA license provided free to jEdit developers for improving jEdit."

krisgenre··on A terrible schema from a clueless programmer
My piano teacher once told me that its common to commit a mistake but its disastrous if you keep practicing without realizing that you have made a mistake. What I look for in a developer is their ability to realize a mistake and find ways to fix it.
krisgenre··on Truths about video game stories
I am not sure if there were any before but Max Payne was the first game that I had every played with an intriguing storyline and an awesome haunting music. I believe those guys invented 'bullet time'.
krisgenre··on Vivaldi 4.0
Also, during the days of Symbian OS Opera Mini was the best mobile browser available. I remember logging into my bank account and actually doing a transaction on my Nokia N73 running Opera Mini.
krisgenre··on Why Lichess will always be free
Yes. I mostly played 2 12. The place felt like IRC for chess, you had to type commands like 'seek 2 12' for a new game and you needed some desktop client like winboard/xboard to play.

Edit: Just played a game, my ID was still active and my last game was in 2012!

krisgenre··on Why Lichess will always be free
I love lichess but before that (in mid 2000's) used to spend a lot of time on freechess.org. Not sure how popular it is now.
krisgenre··on Garry Kasparov launches a community-first chess platform
True. Bullet is unplayable for me on chess.com because of latency but works really well on lichess.
krisgenre··on Facebook removed fake accounts in India until it saw BJP politician was involved
32 lakh people in a WhatsApp group? or is this supposed to mean that they created various groups and the total count of all the members is 32 lakh?
krisgenre··on The Apache Attic
Surprised to see iBATIS. Wasn't it a strong competitor to Hibernate once?

krisgenre··on Docker as an Integrated Development Environment (2019)
Thanks for the tips guys. Will definitely try them out.
krisgenre··on Docker as an Integrated Development Environment (2019)
Does anyone use docker for full-fledged development on OSX? I am a Linux user and tried setting up a dev environment for my colleagues on OSX but file system I/O was extremely slow and completely unusable.
krisgenre··on Tmux lets you select and copy text with your keyboard
Been using Tmux for around 6 months. I frequently use prefix + [ shortcut but always thought of it as "Scroll mode", never realized that its called "Copy mode" nor that one could copy text using keyboard.
krisgenre··on Google Play service fee reduced to 15% for the first $1M/year
>>IE could now be un-installed on Windows.

Why is this important?

krisgenre··on Google Play service fee reduced to 15% for the first $1M/year
What was really the outcome of Microsoft losing the anti-trust case? Windows still comes with a preinstalled browser and I don't remember ever seeing a version of Windows without one.
krisgenre··on Hit Japanese app Crabhouse forced to change name on iOS
Don't forget 'Apple' :)
