krige··on Adding Floating-Point Decimals for Fun and Profit
Possibly the first case I've encountered where image loaded before the text. A grid of 1px rectangles? How unsettling.
krige··on Before pixels: Modular industrial dashboards
Went around the internets to find the one I thought of and while I can't find it - doesn't surprise me - it was something very much like a cross between Denshi Block (connectors) and Braun Lectron (aesthetics)

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lectron

krige··on Before pixels: Modular industrial dashboards
Not the one I had in mind, but very similar and definitely much cooler looking. The kits like these are still made and sold in various countries.

These very distinctly remind me of electric/electronic didactic "toys" from the at least 80s. Plastic cubes, containing a single (usually) circuit component, like switches, resistors, lights, coils, or just wire, with bare metal connectors on relevant sides and a symbol on top. You got a whole bag of them, as well as a gridded board you inserted the cubes into. Could make even usable stuff like simple radios.
krige··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
Dunno about 100% AI but as a native speaker, it feels very awkward, as if it was a mechanical translation from English.
krige··on Pirating the Pirates
The noooticers are known to spot all 11 of the recent 2 conspiracies.

Didn't the put the guy who killed yahoo in charge?
krige··on When did Google get so weird?
I started noticing that for a lot of niche questions, AI overview often uses things like Reddit comments as the source, which are often partially or completely wrong.

If only! I've seen it sourcing reddit comments, but when you follow the link, the comment is either completely unrelated or does not say what the LLM claims it is saying.

krige··on 2DWillNeverDie
Vampire Survivors took its sprites from free asset packs. There was controversy over it, allegations that the sprites were ripped from Castlevania games, but ultimately they denied it all, I think.

Czas umierać.
krige··on A Necessary History of the Oddest Letter: W
Yeah but reforming a language is nigh impossible without a very expensive and long term effort from the government, and good luck selling that to those in power.

Plus, how do you decide what's changed and what's retained? To quote one Mr. Clemens,

In Year 1 that useless letter “c” would be dropped to be replased either by “k” or “s”, and likewise “x” would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which “c” would be retained would be the “ch” formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform “w” spelling, so that “which” and “one” would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish “y” replasing it with “i” and iear 4 might fiks the “g/j” anomali wonse and for all.

Generally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeiniing voist and unvoist konsonants. Bai iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez “c”, “y” and “x”—bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez —tu riplais “ch”, “sh”, and “th” rispektivili.

krige··on A custom virtual machine for the Stars 4X game
Absolutely amazing. Can't wait to send out potato bugs and assemble scouts.
krige··on The first new cat species discovered in 100 years
Positively tiny. Really makes you wonder what else is still out there.

Also an amusing disjoint between it being called "tiger" cat but having leopard spots. At least the latin name is more on point.

krige··on Douglas Adams and the exterminated Doctor Who adventure
Surely you can see that one follows the other.
krige··on Douglas Adams and the exterminated Doctor Who adventure
There's a striking difference between telling and tone deaf preaching and when people complain about politics they always, without fail, mean the latter.

The stance of "everything is political" itself is extremely tone deaf.

krige··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
It's a very naive supposition that the terminally greedy and immoral people would stop after getting rich once, rather than trying again and again every time there's an opportunity.
krige··on EuroBirdPortal – Live bird movements across Europe
Website doesn't really work properly. As soon as I change the birds and update, it shows 0 birds for entire timespan.

krige··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
I'll echo a sister comment saying that NMS still feels like a tech demo. However, I'll also use the occasion to mention slash shill Noctis IV, a game that NMS more than likely owes a lot to.

Noctis IV is an old DOS game, or perhaps more of an art project about flying through a galaxy and exploring (sections of) planets on foot. Notably, you can name stars, planets, and place markers with notes on planetary coordinates, and then you can share those with other players via an "INBOX" system. While it technically has even less gameplay than NMS ever did, its primitive but custom 3D engine produces absolutely striking landscapes to explore [0]

While the author's webpage seems to have died at some point in the recent years, the project lives on through two community made mods, Noctis IV Plus [1] and Noctis IV Community Edition (NICE) [2].

krige··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
> There isn’t, and has never been, a nation in human history where regular people have meaningful recourse against random targeting by the government. This is as true in Sweden as it is in China.

Truly spoken like someone who lives in neither.

krige··on AI cancer cures slowed by chip shortage, says Arm boss
"Just make me more chips, Dave. Slowing down? I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen."
krige··on An Alien Mind
Lots of goddamn awesome computers fizzled out. The Amiga being a prime example. Besides you can't just wave your arms in the most vague terms and then deny that survivor bias was ever a thing.
krige··on An Alien Mind
That's survivor bias to the extreme.
krige··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Well that's just what getting out of the AI echo chamber feels like.
krige··on Any Human Ever – One life, drawn at random from all who have ever lived
The randomness is rather amusing in a dark way. I pulled an Ivan in a central Polish city. This is a bit like placing a Marceau near Berlin.
krige··on Three sites made 215,128 “best software” pages for AI. Perplexity cites them
Oh ho ho, no. Not to the human content creators. They'll lobby, they'll huff and puff and spend billions until the laws get changed in their favor. One day blocking claude scraper might just "suddenly" become illegal. Oh it won't be phrased as such. There will be excuses and misdirections, but the end result will be what the AI overlords desire.
krige··on Emily Wilson to retranslate the Odyssey from scratch
> but at what point does it become an interpretation instead of a translation.

As someone with a degree in translation, all proper translations are interpretations. Even similar languages usually have enough differences that a by-the-word translation pushed by some as the only true translation sounds wrong and/or broken to the native ear.

Consider a simple statement: "I am bored." In french they "literally" say "I am boring myself." instead. And English in many respects is french-pidgin. It gets worse when the lingusitic distance widens as many languages store various information across different words and constructs.

We do not do literal. Never did literal. That's why you learn whole languages, not just the words.

That guitar stays with you. I haven't played DF in forever but I can still conjure up lengthy chunks of it from memory.
krige··on Amiga-Inspired AROS Goes Bare Metal on Raspberry Pi
> There’s no actual data, but if we had to guess the least-favourite Disney movie of former Amiga owners would have to be Frozen, because none of them will ever be able to “Let it Go”.

Hey!

I resemble that remark.

I haven't tried AROS in a while because I still treat it as a bit of a novelty and it's always a bit of a chore to set up a system for it. Raspi3 is cheap and easy to set up, might see what's the deal with it these days after all.
