krichman··on On Lisp
Static typing is greatly beneficial, with HM it doesn't require a lot of annotation (people that use it find type annotations to be beneficial anyway). Languages that don't offer strong typing and GADTs are blub languages.
krichman··on Don't Fly During Ramadan
I do it also, because I don't trust them to not save the images, and I suspect the images will either get hacked by or flat-out sold to a third party later. The pat-down doesn't make me feel like I'm being raped, although I guess I can see why others would be uncomfortable.
krichman··on Ubuntu Edge fails to raise goal
What if they picked a goal they purposely thought they wouldn't reach to test the market on a kickstarting platform and prevent a third-party marketplace from taking a percentage of sales?
krichman··on When An Accidental Feature Becomes Your Entire Business
Thank you! I much prefer whitelisting, but had not known about this one.
krichman··on When An Accidental Feature Becomes Your Entire Business
I switched to disconnect.me a while back because I have a cynical view of a tracker blocker tracking people, even if there is the option to disable it.

And for similar reasons I dropped AdBlock when they decided to let companies pay to be unblocked.

You also need to prefix "apparatus and algorithm for" because mathematics "aren't patentable".
krichman··on Nanomsg – MIT-licensed ZeroMQ alternative
I just saw someone use a globally constructed object to instantiate some global variables and it seemed like a neat solution, but I don't really know C++. What causes it to go wrong?
krichman··on Court Holds That Circumventing IP Address Ban Is “Access Without Authorization”
It is nothing like walking into the DD kitchen and trying to document it. It's quite a bizarre fantasy to think that physical property rights are anything like client-server interactions.
krichman··on How the U.S. and Its Allies Got Stuck with the World’s Worst New Warplane
Seriously, the US government is a larger thread to US citizens than China is.
krichman··on Metaprogramming – Julia Language
Web is the low-hanging fruit. Take a nice-looking language, add a web framework, and developers can instantly do something useful in a language they like. And as you say, it's a widespread need, so even a percentage of that attention is quite a few people.

I think if a language really nailed a niche, especially a lucrative one like scientific/numeric computing, it could be successful on those merits alone, because it would get a large percentage of that niche.

You would be interested in the shunting-yard algorithm[1], to start with.

krichman··on AMC is succeeding by breaking the rules of legacy television
Sharknado is also ridiculous enough to get free advertising on Reddit, so they have that as well. I'd be interested if the "Snakes on a Plane" effect makes an appreciable difference in revenue.
krichman··on Lavabit Founder Says He Had ‘Obligation’ to Shut Service
What the fuck, NSLs have taken down the first and fourth amendments and are turning towards the third.
krichman··on I Am Being Watched
Haha, how far has society fallen that not being distracted by something is considered out-of-the-ordinary respectful?

I agree with you, I think I'd feel the same about a lull, unless they attempt to re-initiate the conversation after a bit. But I also assume people could be expecting an important message or are contractually obligated to be aware of their messages, so I feel they should go ahead and check during a pause (but maybe announce why).

krichman··on Hyperloop
Well I guess judging by the poster's rage, they should have got a better return and folded that into another project. I'm just trying to empathise with the anger of taking risks with relatively low returns using public money.

AFAIC Tesla upheld their end of the bargain and society is up by quite a bit. This is in stark contrast to other bullshit that the US government has funded which is wasteful at best. War, war on drugs, war on privacy, bankers, ...

krichman··on U.S. Expats Balk at Tax Law: American Citizen Renunciations Are Soaring
My knee-jerk reaction is to say that would have been a good thing, but in all honesty his replacement would have been just as full of it.
krichman··on Hyperloop
Sounds like he took advantage of an ignorant government. I'd do the same. So did Wall Street, but we got less back from that one.
krichman··on Hyperloop
If they turn off the compressor there's a giant air cushion in front of them and the capsule no longer has air bearings. It probably lands on wheels and can then engage the breaks. A small capsule has low inertia as well.

Most likely safer than a train.

krichman··on You Might Have an Invisible Facebook Account Even if You Never Signed Up
Yes I'd rather have a politician who regularly attended brothels than voted for SOPA. Raising alarm over OMG sex is a great way for media to control the dialog away from actual issues.
krichman··on Things in Haskell which don't exist elsewhere at all
I agree with this, but I think the appropriate reaction is to ask what he's talking about rather than complain about self-promotion.
krichman··on Things in Haskell which don't exist elsewhere at all
The target audience is r/haskell. I highly doubt the point of it is to explain anything to people that don't use Haskell.
krichman··on Tracking devices hidden in London's recycling bins are stalking your smartphone
I think it would be easy to link either your credit card or your image (if they were doing that) to your MAC if you only made two trips to the same franchise with wi-fi on.

For example, imagine they have cameras that can image your license plate. You go there twice -- they have one MAC and two sets of possible plates. The odds that you and another person were both shopping at those times is pretty low. Now they have license plate, make/model of the car, can probably triangulate the wi-fi to know what you bought each time with reasonable fidelity...

krichman··on Tracking devices hidden in London's recycling bins are stalking your smartphone
I don't understand this viewpoint. It seems to me like advertisers are more likely to use extra data to be more manipulative, the same way they do it by targeting ads on the internet. What kind of improved experience are are imagining?
krichman··on Tracking devices hidden in London's recycling bins are stalking your smartphone
There's a commenter on HN who thinks so;

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6196981

I tend to disagree, I don't think tracking my habits to more effectively manipulate and target me is an enhanced experience.

krichman··on Tracking devices hidden in London's recycling bins are stalking your smartphone
The rewards card would be in one location, you could then know that person's identity at all stores via cell phone connections or cameras.
krichman··on Tracking devices hidden in London's recycling bins are stalking your smartphone
Yeah, there is no way you'd be able to do that in the US without getting charged with wire fraud at least.
krichman··on Tracking devices hidden in London's recycling bins are stalking your smartphone
It's because when we say being observed in public, we assume it to be someone looking at us and then basically forgetting all about us. We don't think about security cameras watching us and having a single party aggregate all of that. And we don't know our cell phones are broadcasting a unique barcode to everything even if we do know the cell towers can triangulate and log our location. (By we I mean our family members, not us on HN.)

Adding technology to the observation makes it so much stronger that I think there should be a new discussion about it by our various governments.

krichman··on New Rust runtime turned on. What next?
I don't know if you'll see this, but I've been wanting to contribute to Rust for a while now. I've checked through the Github issues, but it's not really clear to me what I should do if there's one I think I can do. How should I approach it?
krichman··on Lavabit abruptly shuts down
The US violates human rights and then pretends that they don't, because "waterboarding isn't torture".
