kretaceous··on Ask HN: Create audio software akin to physics engines?
I can't be of much help here but

> I used to think that alot of physics was bs until I found a tutorial on Box 2D physics.

> The tutorials used real physics concepts, like momentum, coefficient of friction and others to simultate physical (mechanical properties of items on a computer).

Can you share these said tutorials if possible? Thanks!

kretaceous··on Show HN: A keyboard-centric clipboard history app for macOS
+1 for CopyQ. Have been using it on Linux and Mac without problems.
kretaceous··on Show HN: Mark Scroll Positions
This is a good idea to a very niche but annoying problem I've certainly faced.

I've always used the "Copy link to text" option in Chrome for this but that doesn't always work when the formatting is a little complex.

kretaceous··on What Is Generative Art? (2022)
Damn, the last two are amazing.

I love generative art and have been recently trying my hands at it (https://circuiter.abhijithota.me) but I'm not sure if I feel positive about it being generally tied to NFTs. I follow a lot of these amazing artists on Twitter and half of them promote their NFTs. I generally tend to ignore that part and focus on the nice patterns made by computers.

Is there no other way to make this a source of income other than NFTs?

kretaceous··on Writers can write anything. Programmers can't
> The app isn’t a representation of me, it’s not a measure of how smart, dumb, or successful I am. It’s just an attempt at creating value.

It's a good mindset to have and I absolutely agree with most of the article when it comes to non-recreational programming. I generally think it's a little pretentious to call code "elegant" or likewise.

> Once I internalised this, I stopped caring about clean code, perfection, and judging the value of my apps myself.

I struggle to relate to this though. I believe good code is a means to make it easier to make a product better and ship faster. Hell, I agree it doesn't have to be "clean" but I couldn't bring myself caring about it altogether.

P.S. Well coding might not be art but it can absolutely be used to make art. The tldr (without the context of making SaaS) is incorrect in my viewpoint.

kretaceous··on Show HN: Dstack – an open-source engine for running GPU workloads
> Thanks for sharing dstack on HN

Seems like this is wrongly tagged as Show HN. @dang, please fix the title after confirmation.

kretaceous··on Is something bugging you?
Sure, it doesn't go into details. And that is exactly why I termed it an excellent introduction and a sales pitch.

I haven't heard of deterministic testing before. Nor have I heard of FoundationDB or the related things. And I went from knowing zero things about them to getting impressed and interested. This led me to go into their docs, blogs, landing page, etc. to know more.

kretaceous··on Is something bugging you?
This might be the best introduction post I've read.

Lays the foundation (get it?) for who the people are and what they've built.

Then explains how the current thing they are building is a result of the previous thing. It feels that they actually want this problem solved for everyone because they have experienced how good the solution feels.

Then tells us about the teams (pretty big names with complex systems) that have already used it.

All of these wrapped in good writing that appeals to developers/founders. Landing page is great too!

kretaceous··on Vesuvius Challenge 2023 Grand Prize awarded: we can read the first scroll
When I first came across this project on HN (early last year), I was taken aback by how impossible the project looked and how smart were people working on this. Despite seeing a few intelligent names behind the project, I subconsciously believed that this would at least take 5-10 years before a breakthrough.

Today I sit with the same amazement, taken aback again, appreciating how ridiculously awesome this is. Congratulations to the winners and everyone involved!

kretaceous··on Lolwut: A piece of art inside a database command (2018)
Why does it print only the version in 7.2.3? I'm using the Docker image FWIW.
kretaceous··on Ask HN: Do people get hired from 'Who wants to be hired' thread?
Definitely. I've got interviews (and an offer) in the past. I got hired by my current employer from a "Who's hiring?" thread.
kretaceous··on AWS Icon Quiz
Love me some good satire.

I don't work with AWS a lot but I thought I could probably score a few points by following their rules for their color coding: orange for compute services, blue for DB related, green for other service management related and red for storage.

I got 6.

Why tf is Route 53 the same colour as compute services?

kretaceous··on Cheems, the Shiba Inu meme dog, has died
I got obsessed with the Cheems memes in the pandemic. One day, I made this little weird play thing: https://cheemsifier.vercel.app/

Consider this my tiny tribute to Ball Ball, the goodest boi there was. RIP.

kretaceous··on Mathematicians Solve Long-Standing Coloring Problem
Is this somehow related to the Four color problem? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_color_theorem
kretaceous··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal finances?
Disclaimer: I used to work here.

I'm from India and I use Fold¹ for this. They make money tracking easier using the account aggregator framework², which is provided by an RBI³ regulated entity. They are currently in invite-only for both iOS (beta) and Android (alpha).

They are very feature-rich and implement those with utmost care to design, UX and engineering. The team is small and everyone is committed to the goal of making finance easier and seen. All amazing people!

Highly recommended for people in India.

kretaceous··on Rejected GitHub profile achievements
It's been a joke among 2 of my friends (and collaborators) that no matter what code they write, a "cleanup" commit by me would refactor/prettify everything.

I deserve the Tee Hee (and some professional help).

Of course, Monkey Wrench is inevitableas well.

kretaceous··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
Here's mine! Pretty novice:

kretaceous··on The Alphametics Page
> The puzzle above (SEND + MORE = MONEY) is especially elegant in this regard - it can be solved in a matter of seconds via a few observations.

I wish it provide some insight as to how. I can't seem to grasp the fact that this can be solved _in a matter of seconds_.

kretaceous··on The Password Game
Neal has outdone himself yet again. I had it until the roman numerals and adding upto 25 ones but lost my cool when it said it must include today's wordle answer.

Screaming and crying.

kretaceous··on MediaMTX: Zero-dependency server for live video and audio streams
I have used MediaMTX to proxy IP camera feeds to custom web pages.

IP cameras generally stream through the Real time Streaming Protocol (RTSP). This cannot be directly played in the web and also requires authentication in most cases.

MediaMTX acts as a proxy to convert RTSP→WebRTC and take care of the authentication.

kretaceous··on The brand new Thunderbird logo
I might just start using Thunderbird because of this. I'm only half joking.
kretaceous··on Show HN: Open sourcing Harmonic, my Android Hacker News client
Harmonic has been my favourite, but only as an HN client but as an overall app. Have been using it for ~2 years now. Huge thank you for building this and thank you for open sourcing it!
kretaceous··on SpaceX moves Starship to launch site, and liftoff could be just days away
Sorry I'm out of the loop/don't really understand what this is. Why would it blow up?
kretaceous··on ChatGPT 4 saved my dog’s life
I shed a tear. It's not often you come across a story of end user tech saving lives, let alone a relatively nascent one.

Such a strong girl. Go Sassy!

kretaceous··on Google Bard Waitlist Parody
Hilarious stuff.

It's open source¹ in case anyone wants to submit more entries.

kretaceous··on Ask HN: Couldn't AI be used to do hash function inversion?
(I'm naïve in both cryptography and ML so pardon me for the following)

I had this idea once but I never tested it:

    - Generate multiple TOTP codes
    - Make a large database with the timestamp and their corresponding TOTP codes
    - Train a model on that
    - Use it to generate MFA keys???
Of course, this wouldn't be possibly an exploit unless you steal a lot of TOTP codes from a user and the timestamps they were generated.

But fun to think about nonetheless.

kretaceous··on Ask HN: Feeling Hopeless and Lost at 23
I don't know if this will be helpful but I'll say this as a 22yo fresher.

You managed to land a full stack role in a company like Shopify despite everything. I commend that. Really inspirational.

I get wanting to learn things more traditionally. I hope you get the help you need from here or via therapy/counselling. All the best!

kretaceous··on Pandas Illustrated: Visual Guide to Pandas
Hang in there! I hope you find a little relief from the stress eventually. Take care and don't forget to take breaks in possible situations.
kretaceous··on VALL-E: Neural codec language models are zero-shot text to speech synthesizers
Same feeling here. I would love to listen to some of my bookmarked articles in a better, well punctuated/stressed voice.
