kregasaurusrex··on Physicists Debate Hawking’s Idea That the Universe Had No Beginning
If I had to choose a favorite article on all of Wikipedia, this would be it. Almost reads like a sci-fi novel of our own personal voyage through the cosmos.
kregasaurusrex··on Relearning Matrices as Linear Functions
Having not taken a linear algebra course in college, does anyone have a recommendation for a book/course to follow?
kregasaurusrex··on After a $14B Upgrade, New Orleans’ Levees Are Sinking
It's still seeing a net population decline though, both in the Metropolitan and suburban areas. A recent post on the Columbus subreddit showed Cleveland has one of the lowest average internet speeds in the country, and this story from Ars [0] shows actual redlining in how new cable was (not) being laid down. The apartment I lived in growing up was using dial-up until my freshman year of high school a decade or so ago.

kregasaurusrex··on Trinity Nuclear Test Site Open House – Saturday, April 6
That alone would be worth a trip out for, with recent research about the first composite image of a black hole [0] to be released next week.

kregasaurusrex··on Show HN: A retro video game console I've been working on in my free time
Thank you for sharing, this is a very cool project!
kregasaurusrex··on U.S. to ground Boeing 737 Max 8
What's the current status regarding analysis of the black box data recorder? The only source I've seen [0] states that Germany lacks the software to analyze it. "This is a new type of aircraft with a new black box, with new software. We can't do it," BFU spokesman Germout Freitag said.

kregasaurusrex··on Tesla – Introducing V3 Supercharging
By how much would using the supercharging feature reduce the overall lifetime of the batteries? Lithium cells aren't immune to the memory effect, which would only be shortened with the high heat associated with pushing a significant amount of power through the car.

The very first issue of Popular Science magazine I received as a kid had the Tesla when it was still the modified Lotus Elise with the clickbait-y title along the lines of 'Could a sports car powered by laptop batteries be the next generation of cars?'. Kudos to all the teams at Tesla who made this a reality!

kregasaurusrex··on Lyft Files S-1
Lyft's business model is betting that automation will happen at the OEM level, and thus has a slower corporate burn rate. So less of their balance sheet goes direct towards automation efforts. Contrast this with Uber's significant losses in which the company's long term survival is contingent on the automation developed in-house to be leveraged as their own. I'm not entirely sure how Uber's technology would be integrate with OEMs where most (GM/Honda's Cruise, Ford, and others) are developing their own level-3+ autonomy, and how their sensor arrays/networks would be physically installed on cars.

I personally wanted to see the patent lawsuit Google had brought against Kalanick to completion- much of the lidar and sensor technology at stake needs to be either licensed using FRAND terms or have each company using its own disparate systems. V2V may be a desired open standard but I'm less than optimistic about its targeted implementation date being a few years away because of this competition.

kregasaurusrex··on Ask HN: Successful projects that weren't received well on HN?
The comments are less professional, and by a large majority the links are dictated by the editor. HN serves as a model for dialogue which more sites should emulate.
kregasaurusrex··on Dear OpenAI: Please Open Source Your Language Model
Wow. This looks it would belong on r/nosleep with how close it comes to crossing the uncanny valley.
kregasaurusrex··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
Surprised not to have seen it elsewhere, but I remember telling my mom that we began studying astronomy in grade school (5th or 6th?) and she gave me Cosmos by Carl Sagan. I didn't know there was a TV series for it at the time, where reading it truly blew my mind that there were other galaxies and stellar objects beyond the Milky Way, and how happenstance humanity's origin story began. It also provided a great foundation for understanding what future missions would explore: finding habitibility zones outside of the earth, probes zooming to the edges of our galaxy, radio telescopes designed to listen for signals from far away, and space telescopes expanding our map of the cosmos just to name a few.
kregasaurusrex··on JD Salinger's unseen writings to be published, family confirms
Contrast Prince with Terry Pratchett, whose estate followed his wishes of destroying the hard drives containing Terry's unfinished works with a steamroller.[0]

kregasaurusrex··on Amazon announces 4th quarter sales
I ran into a similar case with umbrellas- there weren't any local stores selling them on the day before a major rainstorm that ended up causing a significant amount of flooding around the state. Instead I'd decided to pay the premium and pick a reasonably sturdy one from Amazon with next-day pickup.
kregasaurusrex··on Ask HN: Why can’t I block all incoming calls that aren’t in my contact list?
Still sad that BB10 will have support ending at year's end... But does a market exist for users of a non-Android/IOS phone in 2019 and beyond?
kregasaurusrex··on Instacart paying 80 cents an hour because worker received a large tip
Some states have a minimum wage for tipped employees; where Washington only has a flat minimum wage for both tipped and untipped workers.
kregasaurusrex··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
I've seen this in some of the player-made AI bot competitions- it's exciting to see how an opponent reacts to an all-in strategy where a programmer has likely not trained to expect one.
kregasaurusrex··on We should replace Facebook with personal websites
The article mentions how Myspace wasn't able to monetize its users as well as data-driven Facebook does. I wonder if 2006's Myspace could have survived if given more mature toolchains for users' pages to not look as though they were made by a teenager. Or Facebook made an early decision that having less customization is better for growing a userbase such that people will use a service with posts in a format they can be more familiar with across all pages.
kregasaurusrex··on Thank you to dang and sctb
Promoting quality discussion and letting people share their experiences in a professional manner makes me a daily reader of HN. Thank you for your work!
kregasaurusrex··on Report: Intel is cancelling its 10nm process. Intel: No, we’re not
From SemiAccurate's [0] article:

>Update October 22, 2018@3:30pm: Intel has denied ending 10nm on Twitter. The full tweet is, “Media reports published today that Intel is ending work on the 10nm process are untrue. We are making good progress on 10nm. Yields are improving consistent with the timeline we shared during our last earnings report.” SemiAccurate stands by its reporting.

kregasaurusrex··on The First Rule of Microsoft Excel: Don’t Tell Anyone You’re Good at It
Meanwhile, my current job uses VBA scripts written in the 90s instead of properly training its employees on how to create multi-sheet formulas.
kregasaurusrex··on Facebook Network Breach Impacts Up to 50M Users
Worth noting that GDPR requires 72 hours from discovery to disclosure; and whether Facebook's timetable matches these rules.
kregasaurusrex··on Show HN: Hacking slot machines with a buttonhole camera and brute-force search
I'd previously done OCR work with Twitch streams, but the reliability of the Tesseract libraries for custom fonts had stopped me from going any further with it. Since HQ uses a standardized font library, I'd imagine character extraction would be more successful when recording from screenshots because it would likely be closer to the library's training datasets.
kregasaurusrex··on Watch Plants Light Up When They Get Attacked
I never realized that the chemical signals could travel so quickly through a plant, and previously thought this process took hours instead of a few minutes. While we as humans feel almost instantaneous pain, there's a short delay before the spike in calcium ions are then propagated to the rest of the plant's structure. Will be interesting to see how the related knowledge we can learn from simpler eukaryotes could eventually be expanded to include all sorts of more complex ones.
kregasaurusrex··on Are Audiobooks as Good for You as Reading?
With audiobooks and podcasts, I don't feel anywhere near the same levels of retention compared with reading a book or watching a video. Even when wholly focused on the audio during a bus commute, my mind doesn't have the same levels of immersion when reading a book or news article.
kregasaurusrex··on Blood-Testing Firm Theranos to Dissolve
Part of me is disappointed that the tech Theranos had promised never amounted to anything game-changing; but the other especially enjoys Carreyrou's in-depth investigative reporting of the subject.
kregasaurusrex··on Wes McKinney (Pandas lead) calls out large techcos for OSS mooching
Referencing the companies in the original tweet, each one has a landing page (internal or on Github) for how they contribute to OSS. Making open standards which are cross-compatible between programs doesn't happen overnight, where often community-driven users are a force under which further awareness and adoption are spread.

kregasaurusrex··on Tech Billionaires Hack Their Taxes with a Philanthropic Loophole
How does tiered voting stock donated to these companies operate? Does the owner of said stock still retain voting control even though the stock is now owned by the DAF?

There's also an issue with how these sorts charities are privately incorporated which aids in hiding them from public scrutiny regarding how and when funds are spent. For example, a 501(c)3 Organization requires tax forms to be disclosed and available to be audited in order to see all associated expenses. The cost of filing and completing the yearly form is minimal enough not to inhibit any undue stress in record-keeping to follow GAAP, even such that no outside advisors would need to hired in order to file.

kregasaurusrex··on Ask HN: How old are you (optional) and what was the last thing that you learned?
I remember being 17 and doing that on the very day I got my first android phone! Decided to flash a custom ROM (CyanogenMod) without charging the device first and nearly bricked it, and forced me to learn how adb and device bootloaders work.
kregasaurusrex··on Ask HN: How old are you (optional) and what was the last thing that you learned?
24. Learned how IP Routing works while preparing to take the CCNA exam.
