kreek··on 37signals Works Remotely [video]
One thing I was surprised by, I like pair programming better when it's remote. You get the code right in front of you and you talk to the voice in your head (phones).
kreek··on 37signals Works Remotely [video]
1. For us we're all in the same city, close enough to commute but don't - we just save 2hrs everyday :)

2. We do 9-6, 1hr lunch sometime between 11:30 and 1:30, releases after 6, which isn't too bad you're already home when it's done.

3. No different than regular, work breakdown structure, 6hrs/man of actual work in day (email, skype, etc. doesn't count)

4. I use my home computer, this way I don't have to set up two envs, but software is reimbursed, they would buy computer if I asked though.

kreek··on How to get rid of old stuff, sell it for more, and use Amazon as cheap storage
This article got one thing wrong; "eBay's fees can be kind of a rip off" should be "eBay's fees ARE a huge rip off". That combined with the removal of negative feedback for buyers is why you should try Amazon rather than sell as an individual on eBay.

Attn: Spotify, plz implement this too, thx
kreek··on Apache CouchDB 1.4.0 Released
Off topic but this has bugged me for years, Apache has the worst looking and most confusing docs/support material around (thankfully CouchDB eschew the Apache template). If two projects are equal and one is Apache I always choose the other just to save my eyes from bleeding.
kreek··on Logic Pro X
For me #2 is a feature :)

It does take a bit longer but you have more control of how things fit in the mix.

kreek··on My Song Got Played On Pandora 1 Million Times and All I Got Was $16.89
I have no problem with Pandora's payout they are radio without direct access to tunes. I have couple of tracks on Spotify, and although I wish they did pay me more, I don't think they're too far off either. Spotify pay me about $0.004/play.

I also have a premium Spotify account @ $9.99/month. Now I probably listen to more music than most people, as I assume other premium subscribers do. Doing a back of the napkin calculation I listen to an average of 30 songs per day, so maybe 900 plays a month so you could say Spotify charge me $0.01/play. 40% payout isn't bad, maybe it should be 50% or 75%, who knows what Spotify's infrastructure costs them. Either way in the old days (> ten years ago) artists were getting no where near 40%.

I've only bought two albums this year, Boards of Canada and Flying Lotus, they were both not immediately on Spotify. This is probably the best course. Release on MP3, CD, Vinyl, for the first couple of months for the hardcore fans then release to the streamers.

The OP probably has his record label still taking a huge chunk of his payout. Cut out the middle man, self publish. Streaming is only going to grow, streaming profit will eventually go up.

kreek··on Monday was my 46th birthday and likely my last
My understanding of it isn't that life isn't literally suffering, but that anything can cause you suffering (or pleasure).

Let's say you don't own a car, and take the bus to work. Then someone gives you a car, you are happy! A week later someone steals your car. You are back to riding the bus. Your first day back on the public transport is probably filled with quite a bit of suffering even though it is no different that the bus ride you took a week ago.

It's also possible to be too attached to joy for fear that if it ceases it will cause you pain. To goal is to be happy despite external events.

kreek··on Designers Complaining about iOS7
If you can get past the icons, the UI itself appears to be much improved. Just looking at the compass app it's much clearer to glance at and get your information without the Master and Commander design of the old one getting in the way.
kreek··on Wish I was here by Zach Braff
Might of been a bit harsh myself, but most comments start off with a negative outlook.
kreek··on Wish I was here by Zach Braff
The negative feedback on here is astounding, really the worst side of HN. I thought the promo was very funny and poignant, very inspiring. The brief is detailed and the rewards make sense giving the restrictions of producing and distributing a film.
kreek··on Helios
I thought the same thing when I saw this. Even if you haven't heard of Helios you've probably heard Keith's music on TV or online. The website for his film, tv, and ad work is http://www.unseen-music.com/
kreek··on Announcing Backbone.js 1.0
Not to rain on Backbone's parade, but I am easily twice as productive in angular.js. The learning curve is a bit steeper but once you mastered you end up with (IMO) a cleaner more maintainable app.
kreek··on Clojure: All grown up
Any recommendations for a web framework in clojure? I played around with Noir for a while but it seems like that project is abandoned now? What's the Sinatra/Flash of Clojure?
kreek··on Official Hacker News T-Shirt

kreek··on Show HN: Incorporate your startup online with YC's forms (built by two lawyers)

1. California Corps and LLC

2. Make California's franchise tax disappear :P

kreek··on EmberJS Confuses Me
In Angular HTML is the view so that's where ng-click and friends go, while other MVC frameworks have view js files. I know people like to be 'unobtrusive' but many JS MVC apps would be useless without JS so there's nothing to fall back to (other than a plz turn on JS message).
kreek··on Why Haskell Is Worth Learning
I'm sure it's fixable, it's just not the best first impression for those new to the ecosystem :) I love trying out new languages (prag pubs 7 languages in 7 days is great) but for production work I want to know that down the line if I need lib x, it won't be hard to find and even more importantly it will just work (or the googles machine will lead me in the right direction).

I actually stayed away from Scala for a while for this reason. SBT would blow up left and right. It's more mature now and with Play you can build performant web apps very quickly.

kreek··on Why Haskell Is Worth Learning
Don't want to turn this into Stack Exchange and this may be homebrew's fault on OS X but I just tried installing 'haskell-platform' and got:

kreek··on Why Haskell Is Worth Learning
I investigated Haskell for a while and as long as I didn't try to add any libs it was fun. However once I started using cabal to try and manage dependencies all hell broke loose. Obviously it takes a while to get it right (looking at you SBT and Ruby gems) but Haskell has been around forever.
kreek··on Uncopyright
Sure you bought it, but what did you buy? Did you buy the rights to whatever you please with it? It depends. Say I only sell an MP3 through Amazon what are you doing? You're buying it with the following terms of use, which you agree to by the very act of forking money over for it:

2.1 Rights Granted. Upon payment for Music Content, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Music Content only for your personal, non-commercial, entertainment use, subject to the Agreement.

2.2 Restrictions. You must comply with all applicable copyright and other laws in your use of the Music Content. Except as set forth in Section 2.1 above, you may not redistribute, transmit, assign, sell, broadcast, rent, share, lend, modify, adapt, edit, license or otherwise transfer or use the Music Content. We do not grant you any synchronization, public performance, promotional use, commercial sale, resale, reproduction or distribution rights for the Music Content. As required by our Music Content providers, Music Content is available only to customers located in the United States.

kreek··on Remember when people tracked bugs?
I think it depends on the project/author. First thing I check on a project is the commit history. Was the last commit a year and a half ago? Might be a clue :) I've reported bugs to bootstrap, d3.js, and fabric.js. Everyone was very responsive and each was resolved in at least two weeks. Actually with fabric I had bugs and feature suggestions which were implemented the next day!
kreek··on OSX password script for everyone to know
Locking the keychain works until you unlock it from another app. If you enter your keychain password for Mail app or for a web password it becomes unlocked for the terminal command. Which is unexpected behavior as from within keychain, even if it is unlocked, you must reenter your password if you want to see a saved password.
kreek··on Wired Test-Drives Boeing’s New 787 Dreamliner
I agree that comfort is the issue. The airlines squeeze so many seats now into coach that for tall or larger passengers it's very uncomfortable for cross country flights. I'm 6'2" the space under the seat in front of me is always taken up by someone's carry on bag.

Two hour flights are no problem, the five hours cross-country is ok, but any long haul in coach is pretty miserable.

kreek··on MVC is dead, it's time to MOVE on
This looks like MVC to me as well, except what MOVE is calling operations I would call commands. There are quite a few MVC frameworks that work like this, including PureMVC which has been implemented in almost every OOP language http://puremvc.org/.
kreek··on Coding Horror: The PHP Singularity
I'll second Ruby because of Sinatra and add some of my own thoughts. Sinatra is a very gentle introduction to separation of concerns. You can get a Sinatra app running on a shared Dreamhost with the same effort as a PHP site.

PHP was ok for me I spent a ton of time looking up functions in the docs but I could get stuff done. Once I had to edit/work with 3rd party code it was a nightmare.

I've developed in PHP, Ruby, C#, Java, ActionScript, and Python and Ruby's gem system is by far the easiest package management system I've used. Making your own gem is really easy.

Great ideas seem to pop up in Ruby first and then are ported to PHP, so why not use the original (see Rails, Cucumber, Bundler).

kreek··on Adobe confirms it won't support Flash on Android 4.1
I agree that the majority of the blame for Flash dying is Adobe's fault but not for the reasons you outlined. Outside of security concerns everything bad about Flash can be accomplished with 'HTML5', <canvas>, SVG, and JavaScript if you throw the wrong developer at it.

Adobe's biggest mistake was not open sourcing Flash as HTML5's canvas and audio in one. It could have been rewritten to use JavaScript. Converting a game/app from AS3 to JS on 'Flash Canvas' would have been trivial.

I can live with Flash going away but there's a lot of good we're throwing out with the bath water. ActionScript 3 is a pretty nice language. It's basically a mix of Java or C# and JavaScript (it has events and callbacks but not scope issues). There was no need for an ActionScript the Good Parts book.

HTML5's canvas is very primitive compared to Flash's display list. With the display list you have a hierarchy of visual objects (Sprites) so objects can added as children of other objects and if the child dispatches an event it can bubble all the way up the list to the root parent.

kreek··on Tagstand and the NFC Revolution
It may not be a revolution but anything that replaces QR codes is a step in the right direction. It's much more intuitive to tap, swipe, or just be near something than to interact with a QR code.
kreek··on Humble Indie Bundle 5: pay what you want for video games
This is slightly off-topic but seeing the soundtracks bundled with purchase reminded me of it. Can you make decent money creating soundtracks for games? Seems like on of the few avenues musicians have left other than non-stop touring.
