krautburglar··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
As a card-carrying member of the "fuck off we're full" club, excellent.
krautburglar··on The cost of lies: A Mineserver story
Modern chunk generation is enough to make even a dual Xeon sweat. Doing it on a fanless ARM board would have sucked even if he did manage to ship.
krautburglar··on Make Tmux the OS
This talk about "the future" is nonsense. UI is art, not engineering. What some love, others will inevitably hate. This is where unix/linux is light-years ahead of the competition. Unlike Windows/OSX/iOS, you can make your own mixtape.

That, and Steve Jobs died a long-ass time ago. The hand-wringing over "config files" in the age of qwen3 you can run on a 10-year-old GPU is no longer as relevant as it once was. Language got us this far. The checkboxes and picklists of PARC were a detour that is now (thankfully) in our rear-view mirror. Config files are awesome.

krautburglar··on Things that apparently cause cancer
TLDR; Paid shills argue with other paid shills over each other’s creative accounting.
krautburglar··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Douglas Englebart once mentioned that with tools we'll be using for the rest of our lives, most learning curves (even the steep ones) are going to be "worth it" as long they are accompanied by a proportionally steep increase in power. Meanwhile, the average UX person's idea of "modernizing" -- more often than not -- boils down to flattening learning curves. If anything, the UX world's use of the word "modernize" as a synonym for "improve" betrays their philosophical bankruptcy.

If Englebart was right, then the open source desktop is already light-years ahead. It is the only place that provides the option to pick, choose, mix, match, & experiment. That, and the steep-curve GUI needed in one line of work may end up being entirely different from the steep-curve GUI needed in another. The move to "unify" desktop & mobile in the browsers & window managers (free or proprietary) is a glaring example of how one one size does not fit all. I cannot tell you how many people outside of our circle still mourn the loss of scrollbars.

krautburglar··on Grammarly will send unhinged messages to all your users if you try to cancel
Their whole operation seems like some sort of five-eyes information proboscis. If AI is putting them out of business, good.
krautburglar··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
The emotional reaction comes from a deep-seated evolutionary survival mechanism that has served mankind well to present day. Uggo fuck club tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about these people, and more importantly, their thoughts & perceptions. If you join uggo fuck club, your perceptions are off. Why should I value this guy's perceptions & prescriptions relating to ML when he can't even swing the right ones over his own BMI?
krautburglar··on I refuse to let SPICE die
Deprecation of SPICE was news to me. Issue thread on the removal:

krautburglar··on I refuse to let SPICE die
Whether RH paid $100M for this well poisoning, or however much more/less it pays its staff developers to do the same (i.e. wayland, systemd...), the effect is the same: more churn & instability in the Linux space.
krautburglar··on I refuse to let SPICE die
redhat spice driver was always touch and go — like every other linux well poisoning they do.

x11rdp has been good to me.

krautburglar··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Epstein class pays a "journalist" to lie, so that one day, you will have no choice but to purchase their drivable iphones.
krautburglar··on Kale: A Transformation-Safe Spreadsheet System
Personal experience is opposite. Doing stats on millions of rows in any SQL is a one-liner. Working with more than a few screenfuls of data in Excel is a misery.
krautburglar··on Kale: A Transformation-Safe Spreadsheet System
> only optimal use
krautburglar··on Kale: A Transformation-Safe Spreadsheet System
Since free relational DBs like sqlite & mysql came along, only optimal use I see of spreadsheets "in the wild" now is psychological (i.e. real-time "massaging" of the numbers to overcome objections). For things that are more objective, we have so many superior options. Not just databases either. Jupyter & various other REPLs are also great.
krautburglar··on Gloria Steinem has died
I don't have an opinion on pro/anti feminism. I have a big opinion on paid mass manipulators -- especially ones being paid with public funds. It is outrageous --- that they steal our money, then have the gall to propagandize us with it. That they had her operate out of Europe also illustrates how they managed to work around Smith-Mundt at the time.
krautburglar··on Gloria Steinem has died
This is only half right. The capitalists loved feminism. Biggest expense of many businesses is labor. Double the labor pool, labor cost plummets, & profits skyrocket, so of course the capitalists at the CIA appreciated Steinem, and vice versa.

Would add that Alan Greenspan made a similar remark about his consulting firm. How he hired as many women as he could, since he could get sharp ones at a considerable discount.

krautburglar··on A safe MySQL upgrade that wasn't so safe
Mixing binlog formats across replicas sounds like user error to me.
krautburglar··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
Comparing Wayland anything to OSX-like "it just works" is bizzaro-world-tier delusion.
krautburglar··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
I'd prefer it if they did not prepare people to destroy civilization to further pad some decrepit boomer's already ample pension. It's not like you can take it with you Paul.

We should have known better than to put the nerds in charge -- too focused on their spreadsheets and making the big number go up, while completely ignoring the calamities they have wrought upon both the people and their environs.

krautburglar··on Japan tried to build an operating system for the world, the US intervened
From the demos & article, looks & sounds more like proto-web hypermedia than operating system. Even if it had succeeded, it would have grown the same way WHATWG grew (i.e. like cancer).

IMHO, seems like a terminal case of NIH.

krautburglar··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
Assholes like this were all for the police state back when it was up to stop-the-spread “contact tracing”, real-time “fact-checking” my private messages, arresting people for facebook posts, and transing your kids.

Now that the red pedophiles are in charge instead of the blue ones, he changes his tune.

krautburglar··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
AI companies business model is that peasants don’t have intellectual property. Everyone who contributed to this filing should be publicly spat upon and shunned.
krautburglar··on Tyler Cowen: You'll Learn to Love AI Writing
Tyler Cowen is a fat pompous balding pseud and a homo. I mention the homo part not as a homophobia, but to underline that Cowen also fails to meet the baseline fitness requirements there as well. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy — mind, body, & soul.

Please stop posting garbage.

krautburglar··on Scope of Hacks on U.S. Water Supply Widens as Evidence Points to Iran
In this case, I think the chomo-in-chief is correct. If those utilities had done their jobs right, Iran couldn’t touch them.
krautburglar··on Show HN: Shitty – fast terminal. Memory-unsafe and faster than yours
He took zutty (GPL licensed), shitted some claude on it, then released it MIT. A license violation, but not like it matters, since it will end up in the same heap as every other bozo's vibeslop. It is aptly named.
krautburglar··on Scope of Hacks on U.S. Water Supply Widens as Evidence Points to Iran
Irrational reach.

   The Blacks! hacked our firewall!
Those darn Hispanics! exfiltrated customer data!
F\*\*ing Liberals! hijacked the PLC for pump 3!
...said no one ever.
krautburglar··on Scope of Hacks on U.S. Water Supply Widens as Evidence Points to Iran
Iran is beside the point. There is always a convenient bogeyman: China, Russia, North Korea… They sow discord between peoples to cover-up the ineptitude of domestic institutional assholes.
krautburglar··on Scope of Hacks on U.S. Water Supply Widens as Evidence Points to Iran
They always point to a state actor to skirt liability for their own shitty IT work. Then the dim evil journalists swallow it whole, later regurgitating it for their eager little baby bird subscribers.

If there were actual penalties for rawdogging a PLC (or any other control system) on the internet, shit like this wouldn’t happen.
