krabizzwainch··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
I still don't understand we are comparing a brand new company's engineering to Apple, who have been making laptops for what, 40 years now? Apple's GPUs used to over heat a fry the laptop. They used to make keyboards that would fully break because of a piece of dust, but they were riveted down so they were irreplaceable. Titanium powerbooks had hinges that would break in a year.

ALL thermal paste ages. There is no thermal paste that never needs to be changed.

Thats like BMW saying their transmission fluid never needs to be refilled. It absolutely does, its just financially more lucrative for them if the transmission explodes and you have to buy a new one or a whole new car.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond to me. You were right to call out my criticism of Conde, and hearing more about what their involvement is with Ars does clear that up. My comment about "writing for money" was a poorly worded way for me to say that the writing itself is your career, and specifically writing about current tech. Current tech, unfortunately for my tastes and opinions, does involve a lot of AI now.

As to the rest of your points about not wanting to or not having the time to learn it, I understand. I went through many a tutorial before things started clicking with me. In fact, the only way I made python click for me was combining the abstract code WITH something physical like a screen or lights or buttons. I feel attached to the things I spent the time on because of the blood sweat and tears it took to make them work.

I also think reading the repo sent me into a rage because it looks like all the other claude written code, specifically the worst code I've had to implement from someone who did the whole "works on my computer, your problem now".

I have been stuck mentally on this article since it came out. Like, learning enough python to send the time to the display would still have made this a weekend project (I even went and found an adafruit 7 segment pi hat site and read their sample code). The effort is the interesting part to me, I want to read janky code that paints some kind a picture of someone learning. I don't care about finished, "polished" projects. I don't care that AI can know every single possible error that'll pop up and prevent it from happening, I want the clock to break and for the maker to say ohhhh yeah oops thats dumb.

I have had an eInk pi weather display in my living room for like 4 years now, pulling data from openweatherapi every half hour. It's my second favorite project (I made an eReader once... if you like waiting 5 seconds for a page to turn, do I have a product for you!) and I use it every single day. Sometimes it doesn't update when I didn't account for a possibility I didn't know about, and thats okay.

I get that this is someone writing for money and I have no experience in that realm, and I'm sure conde nast prefers faster writing for something less in depth... but I almost feel I should spend my monthly $3 elsewhere.

krabizzwainch··on AI changes the economics of software rewrites
As someone who currently automates the payroll flow generated by someone who doesn’t actually know what it does, I can confirm I am going crazy. My boss will do nothing about it because her boss can’t get finance to let us hire more people. I plan a strongly written resignation letter whenever I find something else.

Something that only benefits people with the most disposable income is a bad thing. I will preach from any platform that I have that scalpers are shit people.
krabizzwainch··on I Fired Google
I have an old iPhone 14 Pro and I haven't been able to get too much working as far as adblocking outside of the pihole. Firefox for iPhone is bad and Mozilla has committed to simply not fixing it. But I want my bookmark sync so I'm stuck.
krabizzwainch··on I Fired Google
I think that this is a really good article for a reason that none of us are mentioning. This is not a tech blog saying this. This is a cooking/gardening/home blog. I use these terms jokingly, but we are nerds on hacker news and this blog writer is a normie. Regular people are getting fed up with how bad google is getting, not just the nerds.

Companies don't care when nerds complain. We always complain. But when their normal user base starts jumping ship, then they could very well start listening.

krabizzwainch··on I Fired Google
I stopped reading your false claim about their claim being false.
krabizzwainch··on I Fired Google
Don't forget a pihole! Sometimes I really do forget how obnoxious the internet is until I try to look at a website when I'm outside of my ad free setup at home. Which in a way keeps me from browsing around websites on my phone and wasting time in that way.
krabizzwainch··on Valve raises Steam Deck prices
I keep going back to Sublime Text when everything in VS Code becomes too much. Last time I looked at Sublime, I was like “Damn, the last update was from 2024? Must be dead.” Until I realized the lack of updates was because it was fully functional for what they wanted as is without connecting to the internet at all.

My newest discovery with the iOS version of foobar2000 is that it can read the files for things I have bought on iTunes and downloaded through the Apple Music app without a subscription. I was trying to go back to an iPod but lack of Bluetooth killed me.

This seems like the best of both worlds for me.

krabizzwainch··on A Tiny E Reader
I know everyone has pointed you to Boox/Onyx devices, but Supernote is also android based. You have to sideload apps or add a 3rd party App Store. I use it for reading in Kobo and KOReader and note taking at work.

I do try to stick with Bandcamp, but a few bands I want just don’t use it.

krabizzwainch··on AI singer now occupies eleven spots on iTunes singles chart
I bought music from iTunes 2 days ago for the first time in like 15 years. I’ve gone back to the iPod life. But I’d almost never buy anything that would be considered chart level music. I was scrolling through the top 100 thinking “who is buying all this crap?”
krabizzwainch··on I switched from VSCode to Zed
If you are good with a slightly jank option, I have had success with just moving the extension directory from VSCode to the VSCodium directory. Works for the Oracle SQL Developer plugin I use often. It might go against the terms in the extension, but I don’t care about that.
krabizzwainch··on Pebble Watch software is now open source
Yeah, I’m not sure if I like that choice from them. I really like the look of their non OLED displays. This has been my favorite running watch, and I’ve used it the longest out of all the different watches I’ve had. Although if I want them to keep existing as a company I should consider buying another.
krabizzwainch··on Pebble Watch software is now open source
My Coros Pace 2 was my solution to my desire for a less smart watch. It cost $200 when I got it 3 years ago. I run a ton and the exercise features of the Pebble just didn’t do it for me (and I don’t want to keep swapping watches based on what I’m doing). I easily get 2+ weeks with 7-8 exercises with GPS on. The screen is some variation of those transflective LCDs or MIPs LCDs.

I can never go back to a 2 day battery life for a watch, even if my 5 year old iPhone technically can’t make it through half a day of use….

krabizzwainch··on Pebble, Rebble, and a path forward
Do you mean that you uploaded it to Pebble back in the day before Rebble? Have you gone through these steps? https://help.rebble.io/recover-developer-account/?viewall=tr...
krabizzwainch··on Pebble, Rebble, and a path forward
I’m just curious, where has Rebble actually claimed ownership of your app binaries? I’d love to know if it’s something more concrete than “Eric said so.”

What’s funny is that we were some bad timing away from IBM giving the DOS money to Gary Kildall and we’d all be working with CP/M derivatives!

Gary was on a flight when IBM called up the Digital Research looking for an OS for the IBM-PC. Gary’s wife, Dorothy, wouldn’t sign an NDA without it going through Gary, and supposedly they never got negotiations back on track.

krabizzwainch··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
Mine was better until Google kept forcing AI sharpening and making things look worse.
krabizzwainch··on I'm spoiled by Apple Silicon but still love Framework
For my all AMD ASUS TUF 16, I am having a great experience with sleep and battery drain. I’m running Nobara, a Fedora gaming spinoff. I can 100% treat it like my apple devices where I can close it and ignore it for several days, and maybe lose 1-5% battery over that time.

My understanding is that it being all AMD makes a difference, but I don’t know for sure.

krabizzwainch··on ReMarkable Paper Pro Move
The software support is decent. Currently it's running an old version of Android that allows you to side load apps. They are supposedly working on moving the OS over to a custom Linux build, but we haven't really seen anything with that. They do release updates fairly frequently and they have a publicly viewable Trello software development board so you can see the status of features they are working on.
krabizzwainch··on ReMarkable Paper Pro Move
Landscape mode would make sense, if scrolling on eInk wasn't completely awful. I can sometimes deal with it on really light websites like Wikipedia, but I just prefer not to.

I will say that my supernote really is just a digital notepad. I keep all my work to do lists organized on it. But since it's Android and supports side loading apps, I have the Kobo app and read a ton on it even without a backlight.

krabizzwainch··on ReMarkable Paper Pro Move
I have a Supernote Nomad and love the size of it, which is A6 sized. I struggle to see how making one more narrow than an A6 pad is useful. This Remarkable kind of looks more like a long post it note or grocery list instead of a notebook.
