kpwags··on Ask HN: Why Haven't We Solve Content Moderation Online?
Because it's incredibly difficult and no one can agree on what the "right" solution is.

kpwags··on Ask HN: What is a science fact that blew your mind when you learned it?
That when we look up at distant stars, nebulas, & galaxies and the like...we are looking back in time. What we see could have been gone for decades, centuries, or longer.

kpwags··on Ask HN: Did LinkedIn started selling user emails last month?
I noticed I got one the other day. It was an aliased email tied only to LinkedIn.

I was wondering the same thing, especially since I've since changed the email since the 2012 breach.

kpwags··on Ask HN: What Are You Reading?
Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975 by Sir Max Hastings

Great account of the history of the conflict in Vietnam up to and including the Vietnam War

kpwags··on Don’t Put Your Work Email on Your Personal Phone
This is certainly a very good reason to not put your work account on your personal phone, but my primary reason not to is that it's my device and I pay for the service. If my company needs me to be available beyond my 9-5 workday, they can pay for it.

If there's an emergency, they can always call, but I don't like being "always on".

kpwags··on Building the New Twitter.com
I like it, but I have a weird bug.

It could have something to do with some of my extensions, but every time I open the new Twitter on Firefox, it has me logged out...but if I refresh the page, I'm back to being logged in and I can browse my feed.

kpwags··on Superhuman embeds tracking pixels in user emails
I seem to recall Gmail doing this a couple years ago. I was working for a marketing company at the time and there were questions as to how we'd track metrics for Gmail addresses since Google would essentially "open" every email and load the images on their servers for their users.

kpwags··on Microsoft's eBook Apocalypse Shows the Dark Side of DRM
This is why people should be legally allowed to remove the DRM from the items they purchase.

I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to remove the DRM from the books I buy for my Kindle or the like. Assuming I don't share them with friends, family or strangers (which is a different issue), the authors, publishers, & copyright holders aren't losing sales.

kpwags··on Light Year One

kpwags··on The new Dropbox
Does OneDrive encrypt data for personal users? Last I saw they only encrypted business accounts.

kpwags··on Amazon says wage hike ‘more than compensates’ for loss of bonuses
I can understand some of the frustration, especially for those making just shy of $15 before the raise, but even if the raise is only from $14 to $15, that still is around $2,000/yr (assuming 40 hour work week) that is guaranteed the way a bonus generally isn't.

I would almost always prefer a raise over a one-time bonus for that exact reason. In my experiences, I can't always count on my company giving me a yearly bonus.

kpwags··on McMansion envy spreads as Americans demand more bedrooms and baths
That layout is how my house is laid out. The guest room is hardly used, but my wife works remotely, and I like to play around with side projects, so the office is quite useful.

For me personally, it's nice to have the room set aside for "work", keeping me a little less distracted.

kpwags··on McMansion envy spreads as Americans demand more bedrooms and baths
I guess that kind of makes sense, since my house was built in the 1950s. It doesn't feel all that large though.

I will admit that I might be a little skewed given that comparing my house to the others in my neighborhood, it's on the smaller size. Most houses I've seen go on the market in my neighborhood are generally 3-400+ sqft larger.

kpwags··on McMansion envy spreads as Americans demand more bedrooms and baths
I have a 1300 square foot home with 3 bedrooms & 1.5 bathrooms. While my wife and I don't have kids, I'm happy with the size. Anything bigger and I feel like it'd be overkill for us. I wish the floorplan was a little more open or could be easier to open up, but otherwise I feel the size is perfect for our needs.

Obviously if children enter the picture, things might change, but I feel like having a house that's too big is more of a pain than it's worth...especially when you need to clean for company.

-----

I have 10+ years of experience developing websites and web applications. I'm a full stack developer. Professionally I've primarily used .NET and PHP, as well as Javascript. In my free time of late, I have started to teach myself Node.js and React to try to expand my horizons and abilities.

kpwags··on Twitter delays shutdown of legacy APIs as it launches a replacement
I'd be happy with a feed that is in chronological order, even with ads & promoted tweets, so log as it does not include:

- "what I missed"

- follow recommendations

- the likes of who I follow - show me their retweets, not their likes

kpwags··on Smartphone cradle used to cheat “10k steps/day” health insurance discounts
I wonder how many people use stuff like this to cheat the system? I remember seeing someone on reddit bragging about attaching their Fitbit to a reciprocating saw to get more steps than his wife.

I couldn't figure out why it was that important, but with insurance discounts, I can definitely see the financial incentives.

kpwags··on Comcast won’t give new speed boost to Internet users who don’t buy TV service
This seems rather anti-competitive. It'd just be a matter of time until Netflix, etc. only run well on the upgraded speed.

Here's hoping someone takes this to the FTC and gets this stopped. I wish I were a little more hopeful.

kpwags··on Facebook Delays Home-Speaker Unveil Amid Data Crisis
Yeah, that's why I just use the mobile website. Does everything I want without giving it wide-ranging permissions to my phone and data
kpwags··on Ask HN: Does anyone really use Groupon anymore?
Occasionally. But mostly just for deals for places I'm likely to go to anyway.
kpwags··on Mozilla working on in-page popup blocker for Firefox
I'd imagine Mozilla would put in a flag to enable/disable this item, leaving it up to the user as to which they would prefer.

Comcast probably wouldn't offer this option...or if they did, they'd charge you more for it.

kpwags··on LittleThings online publisher shuts down, blames Facebook's algorithm
Live by the algorithm...die by the algorithm
kpwags··on Craft Beer Is the Strangest, Happiest Economic Story in America
I love this, but I'm curious as to how much it can grow. The neighboring town to me has 5 craft breweries on its main street. All of them are within a 1 mile of each other. It's even crazier since there are also 3 winery storefronts/bars and a craft distillery in that same radius.

The other thing I've found is that it has inspired people, including myself, to try their own hand at brewing. I just bottled my first batch and while I have no delusions that I'll start my own brewery, it's a fun activity to try one's hand at.

kpwags··on Ask HN: Who's switched from Chrome to Firefox 57?
I switched about a month or so ago once Nightly hit 57. I have to say I love the speed and performance of it.
kpwags··on Amazon Key is a new service that lets couriers unlock your front door
I'm sorry, but I don't really feel comfortable letting Amazon into my home.

To be fair, I feel the same about UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc.
