> Windows cheats here because it also manages BIOS updates

Is this (relatively) new?

I don't use TPM and I rarely update BIOS unless I really need to, but I thought there was an option on my BIOS/UEFI to use USB drive to update it. How would Windows know about it?

kozziollek··on Dwarf Fortress – Boatmurdered Part #1 – Intro (2006)
Notch (the original creator of Minecraft) mentioned he got inspired by DF:

> Infiniminer is the main inspiration for the blocky design and the terrain deforming. Dwarf Fortress is the main inspiration for the survival game mode, and this is where I want to take the majority of the gameplay.

Kovarex (creator of Factorio) mentions Minecraft mod(s):

> I always loved minecraft mods like industrial craft, but limitations of minecraft were my motivation to create something on my own.

https://forum.industrial-craft.net/thread/8845-factorio/

and not getting job at Mojang:

> I had this great idea to apply for a job at Mojang as working on Minecraft might be very inspiring. I didn't get any reply, and later on, I decided to try to make something on my own.

kozziollek··on Rivian embraces Tesla's charging standard for EVs
Offtopic: could people that write news titles please learn how to capitalize words? Or can we make sure that at AI will know it, when most of news are written by it?

Took me 3 tries to parse the title.

"Rivian Joins Forces" - is that name of an organization? - "with Tesla"... nope, that doesn't make sense.

"Rivan Joins forces" (somebody to do something), syntax error got "with".

"Rivan joins forces with Tesla" - yay!

And you know that person who wrote this knows about lowercase, because of "with" and "for"...

And why would you need crypto for that? You can sign stuff without crypto.
kozziollek··on “Invalid Username or Password”: a useless security measure (2014)
If username is an e-mail then an app probably checks if e-mail domain has configured single sign on (SSO) and, if it has, it redirect you to your company authentication server instead of asking for password.
kozziollek··on Ask HN: Why is there no way to lower amber alert volume on headphones?
It's system to ask the public for help in finding abducted children.

And non-American banks force their non-American customers to answer "are you happen to be American resident?". Even when they never did anything related to USA.

Imagine if every country on Earth asked this. But of course USA can force other countries to do whatever it wants.

kozziollek··on 10% of the top million sites are dead
Most of cities in Poland have their own $city.pl domain and allow websites to buy $website.$city.pl. That might not be well known. And cities have theri websites, so I guess it's OK.

But info.pl and biz.pl? Did nobody hear about country variants of gTLDs?!

kozziollek··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
Was her Youtube account removed or whole Google account?

I might need to rethink uploading my Factorio speedruns to YT...

kozziollek··on The Factorio Mindset
There is psDoom [1] to manage *nix processes in Doom. There is Dockercraft [2] to manage docker containers in Minecraft. Managing AWS in Factorio seems like next logical step!

kozziollek··on Parsing gigabytes of JSON per second
Oh yes, CSV! Sure! Separated with commas or semicolons? With quotes or without? What decimal separator?

No thanks.

Use Protobufs, Parquet, Avro, etc.

kozziollek··on Check If Email Exists
Assuming that the customer's servers were hosted by some SaaS like Office, right?

If customer was hosting e-mail servers themselves they wouldn't notify any other mail servers?

kozziollek··on How do I opt my access point out of Google Location services?
At least somebody at Microsoft thought and _optout can be anywhere in the SSID.

Good thing that you don't have to have two specific suffixes at the same time!

kozziollek··on Plotting the source code “TODO” history of the most popular open source projects
Cool! That date axis though...

PHP's 3 years 2011-2014 are much shorter than 2 years 2014-2016. NodeJS's years 2017-2020 that were ~50% longer than 2013-2017.

kozziollek··on BadEconomics: Putting $400M of Bitcoin on your company balance sheet
Hammers should cost $10, but it is new invention and not everybody is convinced yet. Early adopters are selling hammers for 0.03$ waiting for more people to want to buy hammers.

Also, there are multiple factories producing hammers and there is no one entity to tell others what hammer price is/should be.

kozziollek··on Recompile – a 3D Metroidvania-inspired hacking adventure game
Aww... I thought HN post was triggered by it release (or at least date), but sadly this is not a case.

BTW, how not-released game can have so many awards already?!

I started using Joplin https://joplinapp.org/ some time ago.

Open-source. Encrypted if you want. Synchronized using WebDAV (also Dropbox, NextCloud and OneDrive). Uses markdown. Has tags. And apps for everything (Windows/macOS/Linux/Android/iOS/terminal).

I think it's just local ;) I'm in CEST (UTC+2), so it's 12:22 pm right now, and schedule page shows that orange line in 12:00 PM box.

But I agree - it should mention timezone or if it's local time. I saw "AM/PM" and also assumed it was some "stupid" American time.

kozziollek··on How Much Air Pollution Is Produced by Rockets? (2017)
According to wiki [1]:

> At a constant acceleration of 1 g, a rocket could travel the diameter of our galaxy in about 12 years ship time, and about 113,000 years planetary time. If the last half of the trip involves deceleration at 1 g, the trip would take about 24 years. If the trip is merely to the nearest star, with deceleration the last half of the way, it would take 3.6 years.

24 years is one generation of humans. And 113,000 years is still less than 600 million years. Speed of light is not a problem. Making that ship self-sustainable and even being able to accelerate to 0.999 c might be.

kozziollek··on Parsing JSON Is a Minefield (2018)
Not sure about CSV files, but every time I'm pasting numbers generated by Python or Java I had to use Notepad or Excel itself to replace dots to commas because of (Windows'!) regional settings.
