kowabungalow··on Waiting 100 years for a home isn't a housing crisis, it's a moral collapse
Yes and no.. Slashing the problem completely is no worse than not fixing it since a climb into the stratosphere also has to burst.. I.e. with a new generation rejecting traditional lifestyles.

I think the solution is to artificially build new cities with ideal logistics. Distant cities inevitably draw away housing consumers but by least influential first and are outside each others influence for NIMBYs.

I'm no state judge, but I think the states do have jurisdiction on kidnappings where the crime doesn't cross state lines.
kowabungalow··on US Government threatens Harvard with foreign student ban
> So let's not pretend these institutions are noble

If only the noble deserve a reasonable state then welcome to hell.

kowabungalow··on US Government threatens Harvard with foreign student ban
Let's not pretend that was the topic.
kowabungalow··on US Government threatens Harvard with foreign student ban
Foreign students interested in a US education have diverse motivations and Universities in/of other countries have done well selling programs that compete with the US' institutions for students that don't have that motivation. Soon that may also be almost all of them.

Trump is a disease, the tools he uses are the opportunities given to adapt Putin's template for the American Empire.
kowabungalow··on US Government threatens Harvard with foreign student ban
Universities had better hurry up with opening up their foreign campuses.
kowabungalow··on Zoom outage caused by accidental 'shutting down' of the zoom.us domain
Hence 'for .us'. The trouble with this form of pedantic is that the nicer way to interpret the misunderstanding is that the pedant is ignorant either of language or the structure of dns.

"He runs the Internet routers for our company." -> "Your company doesn't run the Internet" -> wtf?

kowabungalow··on ChatGPT 4.1 Jailbreak Prompt
I think the question of why it works triggers some kind of stroke in some people like when a child swears and the only rational interpretation says something about the environment that they don't want to hear.

An LLM is applying a statistical model.. If 4chan has fren with right wing rhetoric in hundreds of thousands of threads and other sites like HN use these only in occasional discussions of 4chan, you are hinting an LLM to generate content like a right wing diatribe.
kowabungalow··on Decline in European Travelers to U.S.

kowabungalow··on Decline in European Travelers to U.S.

kowabungalow··on Decline in European Travelers to U.S.
I've talked to plenty of people who regret having future tickets for travel to the US. I assume they were aware of the costs and considered them in their itinerary just as people have always had to for NYC, etc.
kowabungalow··on Tesla rival BYD launches five-minute battery in $30k model
One has to make a lot of capacity decisions around how well the unreplaced battery is going to perform years out if they are complex to replace, lugging around all that extra is also not good for (the environment or) a consumer who may be better served by half capacity batteries replaced twice as often, etc.

Perhaps the streets of the US will start to look more like Cuba to the rest of the world.
kowabungalow··on "Adulting" courses in America
The world changes so parental advice may need some adaptation, but the general idea is that they show their child when they make decisions. This may have been more about what job they took for what pension it came with and what car they bought for which labor price and now it is which car to never buy.

This kind of thread bothers me with it's hand wringing. Parents and teachers often spoke of their lives in casual conversation when I was growing up and it was pretty clear to me that, aside from it being a response to having no adult around to make a more useful conversation with for them, there was an element of educational intent.

kowabungalow··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
The goals are petty profit, some extortion, some illegal trading. Destroying 80% of the value of the US isn't meaningful if he gets to own a lot more of the remainder. Everything is profit for the broke real estate conman of 2015.
kowabungalow··on Palantir Is Helping Doge with a Massive IRS Data Project
Government overreach was endangering America thanks to the tireless work to conspire by government employees who barely want to do their own job, but an organization legally aligned on gaining independent financial advantage can provide oversight that won't misuse access?
kowabungalow··on America's financial system came close to the brink
I think the biggest issue is that you have to put the assets somewhere and usually that meant a relationship to US currency. China has to go further with a proposal for how it is going to do a US proof global system. Telling the EU to stand up in unity will only work when the proposal makes the same kind of sense to the EU in the longterm as whatever the US is doing makes sense to the Republicans.
kowabungalow··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
I think you place too much emphasis on US spam.. It's had its day and anyone susceptible to it is heavily in crypto that existing holders go heavier if they have more money to allocate to it is still a fragmentation away from actual usage where normal funds and banks add small percentages in longterm funds as a precaution.

I.e. GameStop is all very impressive until you compare it to anything finance actually dumps money in by default.

If the pyramid is isolated it tops out somewhere a lot higher than now and then collapses for lack of a place to sell to next or an actual return.

kowabungalow··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
When the IRS left it in the grey zone it wasn't really going to the moon because every financial advisor couldn't say 5% of you retirement should be in an investment we can't sell you. It would take a lot more and richer people with oppositional disorders to make up for some universal retirement "just in case" advice.
kowabungalow··on Trump announces 90-day pause on 'reciprocal' tariffs with exception of China
The President of the US believing it wasn't was never sufficient to make it independent, but what is the opposing force if the President of the US believes it is part of China?

Whether he is an actual idiot or a selfish asshat (if those are even independent properties), China's calculus is influenced by the benefit of the US treating Taiwan as part of it.

kowabungalow··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
I'm also not sure why other countries aren't moving to criminalize trading crypto to try to tank him and his cronies since the US has given up on preventing presidential conflict of interest.
kowabungalow··on US forges ahead with 104% tariffs on China
China seems like the obvious one to propose the new free trade agreement for countries that adequately tariff the US.

I'm sorry.. I meant place export controls, is that better?

kowabungalow··on Bodega cats make New Yorkers' hearts purr, even if they violate state law
Federal agencies suggesting easy to enact laws that should be affected by both parties is a strange bogeyman to have when you actually have private companies dictating legislation with a BS cash as speech argument and federal storm troopers illegally acting within the jurisdiction of states. Why are the republicans so afraid of agencies with no teeth and all for federal agencies that could really illegally enter their state and kidnap them?

(I think this is the end of the thread so I will answer you question here.. You have always had perfectly reasonable local options if the FDA code has something you disagree with, because everything is a partnership with your local government, you have absolutely no power to stop a group like the CBP from illegal road stops in your state because your State would have to start succeeding. Therefore, I find the republican claims of priorities as hypocritical as democrats given indifference appearing where it would matter if the priorities were real.)

kowabungalow··on Why Do Domestic Prices Rise with Tarriffs?
The US will probably keep adjusting its tariffs to make sure it is the supposed cheat, so a better move is to give it as little real value as possible for your quota.
