This is not support of Hamas though, it is an acknowledgement that there will understandable reactions to the ongoing carpet bombings and warcrimes done by Israel right now. I.e self defence from whatever group holds power there right now.
kossTKR··on I face investigation for terrorism
See this is exactly the extreme war hungry rhetoric i'm frightened by.

Looking at historical context, calling for thinking before acting, looking at both sides, is not being a "useful" idiot.

Especially when Israel has killed a hundredfold more palestinians over the span of decades and Israel itself helped create Hamas through these extremely violent hardliner measures:

https://theintercept.com/2018/02/19/hamas-israel-palestine-c...

I say we stop blood dripping revenge, we've already stuffed a million people into a concentration camp and effectively carpet bombed them for years, with lots of civilian casualties besides the Hamas that we can all agree to condemn.

Great question, i'm in a scandinavian country that is what is so surprising to me.

I have family both here in the US and the UK, and everywhere seems to be the same. It's almost like there's been some secret doctrine implemented.

As an example the "relatively" moderate labour parties of both Denmark and the UK as come out as pretty extreme militaristic hardliner supporters of Israel doubting the effectiveness of ceasefires, using vulgar language about the Palestinians and refusing to acknowledge any crimes committed by "their side".

This is very surprising to me as i have family who fled the London bombings in WW2 and have always talked about the extreme importance of thinking clearly in conflicts, being merciful, never being going "hardliner" and most importantly being sceptical of military industrial complexes.

kossTKR··on I face investigation for terrorism
What a bizarre thing to say. I wan't the jewish state destroyed? You are seeing ghosts my friend.

The fact that not carpet bombing and creating a huge concentration camp for millions that had their land annexed is now equal to wanting the Israel state destroyed is a testament to how one sided some of you people see thing conflict.

I'm pro peace, anti carpet bombing, and i see that Hamas has been supported by Israel to weaken PLO, and that settlers have stolen property and killed palestinians which has led to this extremism now, at the same time i understand the importance of an israeli state, and i understand the horrors of living in fear of rockets, though they kill a hundredfold less than the Israeli military.

It's not an even conflict in my yes.

As a sidenote has anyone else been surprised by the extreme political iron-fist and omnipresent media control to side with Israel?

When talking to colleagues, family, and even my Israeli friends there's a plurality of opinion, sadness, serious discussions, but when looking at mainstream media, even relatively moderate it seems like everyone and their grandma is screaming for bombs and are "tired of the stupid poor palestinians" like everyone forgot the enormous plights they have gone through, the hundreds of thousands dead over decades, the property stolen by settlers and that they were mostly moderate farmers before they were annexed and carpet bombed (There's countless of videos of this).

It's like living in a Black Mirror episode.

The worlds largest military carpet bombing a tiny strip of land and a downtrodden people, and i have never seen politicians this bloodthirsty.

At the same time i see very, very few public figures, colleagues included having the courage to call out the atrocities done by Israel continuously, for fear of "something" while there's never ending stories from the opposite side.

Can anyone tell me what that something is - and if this is some extreme geopolitical importance of Israel to the west that the idea of the western "free society" has finally come to some screeching halt?

How can there be such an enormous difference between "the man on the street" and the media landscape?

My grandparents fled war, and the way the west talking and behaving is so incredibly shameful to me, but i don't recognise this war hunger when i turn off the TV.

kossTKR··on I face investigation for terrorism
True, let's call it Apartheid then, not much better unfortunately.

Also very important to highlight that most people living in Palestine were pretty provincial and moderate farmers before being carpet bombed by settlers which has unsurprisingly lead to extremism.

kossTKR··on I face investigation for terrorism
First of i doubt he's done that.

Second, the Israeli military has killed much, much more people, including thousands of civilians, kids and mothers over a half a century.

There are countless of videos and reports of rich settlers, harassing, stealing property and straight up killing regular palestinian farmers and families just living in their houses.

And third. Israel has actively supported Hamas to destroy moderate opposition like the PLO - the good old divide and conquer strategy.

So unless you also want to detain supporters of Israel this doesn't really make sense.

And no, you shouldn't detain them either like this.

kossTKR··on AI hype is built on flawed test scores
Exactly and things are actually getting crazy now. Pardon the tangent but for some reason this hasn't reached the frontpage on HN yet: https://github.com/OpenBMB/ChatDev

Making your own "internal family system" of AI's is a making this exponential (and frightening), like an ensemble on top of the ensemble, with specific "mindsets", that with shared memory can build and do stuff continuously. Found this from a comp sci professor on Tiktok so be warned: https://www.tiktok.com/@lizthedeveloper/video/72835773820264...

I remember a couple of comments here on HN when the hype began about how some dude thought he had figured out how to actually make an AGI - can't find it now, but it was something about having multiple ai's with different personalities discoursing with a shared memory - and now it seems to be happening.

This coupled with access to linux containers that can be spawned on demand, we are in for a wild ride!

kossTKR··on Mozilla's midlife crisis has taken it from pioneer to Google's weird neighbor
Straight up wicked!

I'm absolutely disgusted every time i'm reminded of just how obscene the yearly pay for that class of people, and how often they are just straight up psychopaths.

They rely on nepotistic networks of power, scamming, and straight up financial crime.

Unless you yourself built the company, or pulled some rare actually great scheme to elevate it, everything above 1MM a year is stealing from other peoples wages, especially in orgs like this.

I wonder why people haven't pulled a french revolution when there's countless examples of this type of siphoning everywhere these days.

These people don't give a fuck, they are twofaced, they lie all day long while they take your money and use it to buy wine cellars, yachts and propaganda to keep everyone down - all disguised by buzzwords like "open", "green", "patriotic" or whatever while they tank the great work done non psychopaths.

kossTKR··on First Impressions with GPT-4V(ision)
I actually did , and yes it's extremely challenging and can be rather rage inducing; "it doesn't work" --> what doesn't work --> "the thing" --> what thing --> ∞ ...

But the thing is conversations like the above ie. both external support and internal feature requests could theoretically be handled by a GPT-like system also ending up in a ai created custom specification that could both be implemented and documented by the ai system instead of humans?

I know we're a few versions out, but still.

kossTKR··on First Impressions with GPT-4V(ision)
But if this development continues AI will surely be able to just parse the entire frontend, then look at the repo, then look at the specifications, then when you ask for a specific feature it will instantly implement it gracefully.

I don't see why it wouldn't understand piles of hotfixes on top of each other, or even refactor technical debt in tight coupling with existing or historical specification.

Or is there a reason this is not going to happen in a few years?

kossTKR··on iCloud Drive silently deletes your content
I once set up drive for a family member with two computers effectively nuking their docs slowly without any warning then ended up just "hanging".

"Hanging" with no progress bars, no warning, no errors is the Apple way of doing things still after 15 years.

I wonder how hard it would be to implement a dev-mode where it actually told you why it hung, or what the hell it's "doing" in magic (black box garbage) mode.

As a non-american it's always fascinating to see comments like this downvoted.

It's absolutely mostly the poor who go to jail except a few fall guys - it's very apparent.

That's class privilege for you guys, and it has been like this for hundreds of years in most societies but only americans seem to "miss" this or whatever the hell is going on.

Just as here in the EU, fraud in elite circles shuffles billions every day while everyone focuses on petty crime and sensational cases.

Wars have killed millions for resource political gains and entire economies have been fucked over to benefit tiny circles of the richest - and none of these people have ever gone to jail.

The control that the uppermost echelons has over the flow of information in this new social cybernetic system we've all been forced into is so efficient, it's almost unbelievable lol.

Yeah i'm also a bit surprised that "virtual pets" aren't larger today.

Maybe i just don't follow the gaming market enough but games with a simple interface, with a creature that you care for, that grows and lives 24/7 and that can "do things" with other creatures seems like quite the market.

Many people find the "character creator" and just "walking around a aimlessly" in games the most interesting thing, and spend little time playing the actual game.

Maybe these things have been explored in the crossovers between VR Chat, Pokemon Go, Spore, Animal Crossing etc.

There's studies on it destroying the gut flora that is continuously being ignored.

Also sending "sweet" signals from the mouth can't be good in the long run, - pretty sure it spikes insulin somewhat, and even if not we need to understand diet in a holistic way - if something is too good to be true, it probably is.

That said i've consumed a lot of the stuff in my time and is not that worried.

kossTKR··on Long Covid in a highly vaccinated population – Australia, 2022
90% of "science" these days is actually politics, pill pushing, clickbait, philantrophic PR, geopolitical soft power flexes, grant baiting or the result of industry money or lobbyism.

Not weird most people are tired of that shit.

The technological foundations are amazing, but were laid many decades ago for the most part and most "bad things" these days are the result of the highly advanced and interconnected but extremely brittle global industrial society we have built, and the inequalities that still exist for 90+ of earths population.

But those problems will not get addressed directly but instead used as excuses to implement various shock doctrines by the upper echelons to pull or push various policies to siphon even more money from the many to the few.

"Science" as known pop culturally is one of these political tools, and it's becoming apparent.

kossTKR··on Ask HN: What are some easy ways to earn some side money?
Interesting that for over a decade these threads were filled with hundreds of optimistic posts, but now it's almost pure pessimism and warnings.

Maybe earning money on the internet, even with advanced skills and experience has just been met with so much global competition that it's just not that valuable a skill anymore, maybe the monopolies took over e-trade and maybe most users became trapped in silos or on giga-services so the money is really in influencing, not curating, building or creating from scratch?

Rather depressing.

kossTKR··on Azure ChatGPT: Private and secure ChatGPT for internal enterprise use
Yeah that's one of the insane things that will happen.

Very soon everyone will in effect "hide" behind an agent that will take all kinds of decisions on one's behalf. Everything from writing e-mails to proposals but also to sue someone, make financial decisions, and be a filter that transforms everything going in or out.

I can't imagine this world really. How the hell are people going to compete or stand out? Doesn't it seem that what little meritocracy existed wills soon drown in noise?

kossTKR··on X.com Now Points to Twitter.com/
Why are you baffled people are sceptical of elite trickery when it has been going on for thousands of years?

Musk seems unstable, but Tesla, his stocks and various other endevaours has been masterfully constructed to extract public wealth and placing it into private hands.

This is probably just him being bipolar or whatever, but every day companies are being purposefully run to the ground, resold, repackaged, sabotaged etc. for a myriad of financial reasons.

The whole "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity " is such a disgusting american smokescreen, same with the stupid "occamz razor" being constantly used wrongly to shut down old school financial journalism or conspiratorial nature of the upper echelons of society, something that was in the public consciousness 50 years ago, but has now been memoryholed. It's so laughably convenient if it wasn't so sad.

The oligarchs are very, very savvy about finances, but "seem" incompotent about their core business, because their core business is often not what they tell you it is, or they just don't care about efficiency, but about monopolies, subsidies and public funds.

"Oops we lost all of the public's money, sorry we were so incompetent, we're just human after all and didn't intend or plan to at all even though the half the money is now funnelled through hyper advanced financial schemes to Caribbean islands".

What the actual f. This corporate paradigm needs to burn to the ground.
kossTKR··on Ask HN: What are you doing to fight climate change?
Living a somewhat frugal life is probably key to living a happy life but recycling and personal responsibility is a smokescreen as documented heavily in the history of green PR.

For some reason the american political hegemony the world suffers under has convinced everyone that global culture is driven by the most superficial almost cartoon-like identity or introverted politics and not hardcore resources, class war, and realpolitical games adhering to a global physical reality.

It's a trick. And it's working because people look inwards when they should be seething with rage at the elite and the systems that have put us in this mess. Hint: Someone did something to community organisers from the 60's until now.

There is only trying to go against the bizarrely powerful lobbying groups, the open doors between industry and politics, the shadowy networks of power, or if not interested in parapolitics try to move towards various scientific adaptations for an extremely uncertain future.

The world is a huge cybernetic system and human culture or something as irrelevant as personal consumption patterns is 100% downstream from physical resources, technology, and the resource and class wars plus geopolitical games to control them. These were the known targets for all successful mass movements but that has been obscured.

Interesting. The very early adoption of the neural engines in all Apple products would make you think that they had something brewing. Same with the relatively capable m1/2 GPU's. Various models and stable diffusion runs suprisingly fast on these devices and could be optimised to run much, much faster if Apple actually cared, but they weirdly seem not to.

kossTKR··on The Mac Sonoma sure is starting to look like the iPhone
Agreed with spotlight, and when searching in a folder in finder it just doesn't work - it's absolutely bizarre.

Say i open a folder with 50 files and i want to filter them quickly, i go to the upper right corner of the window and click the little spotlight icon, then at first the OS default is to search your -entire- computer, a hilariously bad design choice, then when you change that and start typing for the hundredth time it takes minutes for anything to show up like spotlight has to index the folder again.

And sometimes nothing happens at all, and since apple doesn't show any feedback or what's going on you've got no idea if scrolling will be faster - so it's one of apples infamous "nothing is happening because we are doing magic" moment you meet daily.

What the hell is going on Apple?

kossTKR··on Privatisation has been a costly failure in Britain
I just want to chime in and say that most "free market" ideologies have been engineered, spread and astroturfed by the robber baron classes to siphon as much money from the many to the few while distracting everyone with tension and circus - so much that this fact is hard to even find in the anglosphere.

It's an incredible feat of psychological engineering spanning over a century, and now people love to believe in the absolute fairy tales of rags to riches, ideologically instead of realpolitically or resource driven geopolitics and meritocracy instead of the realities of an ever increasing gini coefficient.

kossTKR··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
The difference is that in science the dialectic is between you the observer or a group of observers and a "reality" that hopefully(!) remains relatively stable, because the human organism is the way that it is - just as physical reality.

But these models are changing literally every day, so there's no fixed thing to reveal.

So no one will be able to reproduce anything at all.

This makes all this "engineering" pretty ridiculous in my eyes, it's literally for one models bizarre emergent properties.
