koshergweilo··on Grow a Garden Calculator
For people not aware, Grow a Garden is the most popular Roblox experience ever released. It achieved one of the highest peak concurrent player counts of over 21.3 million players. To this day the active player count hovers around 2-8 million concurrent players at any given hour
koshergweilo··on Sega mistakenly reveals sales numbers of popular games
It's wild to me how Team Sonic Racing sold more than Total War Three Kingdoms
koshergweilo··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
> All browsers that matter now support a solid common set of features which should be sufficient for the vast majority of cases.

All it takes is one of those non majority use cases and you're going to need some kind of dependency to get things consistent

koshergweilo··on A look at the creative process behind Bluey and Cocomelon (2024)
I think the author chose these two shows as a comparison because they were created in roughly the same time period, so they're more directly comparable. Mister Rogers was created in a different era, with different media environment, funding and monetization strategy, and functionally in a different medium.
koshergweilo··on OpenAI Plots Charging $20k a Month for PhD-Level Agents
Responsible, maybe, but Liable? I don't think so. So long as you genuinely try to do your best and don't break the law, the a company can do is fire you.
koshergweilo··on The End of Weather Forecasting
> It was designed to integrate multiple forecasting centers in one building to improve operating efficiency

Oh man, the irony of the "Department of Efficiency" closing down a branch that was made specifically to make the system more efficient

koshergweilo··on The End of Weather Forecasting
That is not what most second amendment proponents assert
koshergweilo··on The Cantonese Scrolls – A Cantonese language learning mental RPG
This is awesome, there aren't many good resources to learn Cantonese, especially compared to Mandarin
koshergweilo··on A UC Santa Cruz professor unearthed the oldest alphabet yet
How democratic a regime is can only be measured in hindsight unfortunately
koshergweilo··on Recovering from a kidney donation
Just found out I have the gene for Alport syndrome. This thread has filled me with more hope than I've had in a while.
koshergweilo··on Porygon Was Innocent: An epileptic perspective on the infamous Pokémon episode
That's actually pretty cool, props to Apple for open sourcing it
koshergweilo··on Real Life "Sort by Controversial"
Something interesting about the article was how ChatGPT seemed to take the left-wing position on all of the example scissor positions.
koshergweilo··on Vegetation in Cod:BO4
Pretty interesting article, I'm always surprised how complicated spacing out vegetation is
koshergweilo··on Most gamers prefer single-player games
An obvious explanation for why publishers overwhelming focus on multiplayer titles despite consumer demand is that multiplayer games are much harder to pirate
koshergweilo··on Show HN: Focal, a Pomodoro App
I've never heard of this method, sounds like a great way to stay in the flow state without burning out
koshergweilo··on Show HN: I built a math website the internet loved, I'm back with more features
Small nitpick, instead of having a "back to home" button on the left, maybe just make the logo in the navbar a link to the homepage.
koshergweilo··on Meta Reports First Quarter 2024 Results
> Also you can't directly connect to steamVR without going through Quest link

Is this true? I have a quest 2 and just downloaded the steam link app and it seems to just work. Are you talking about wired?

koshergweilo··on PM2: Production Process Manager with a Built-In Load Balancer
I've had a lot of luck with dokku. It uses docker so it's more heavyweight, but it's super simple and scales really well
koshergweilo··on Role of Covid-19 vaccines in preventing post-Covid-19 complications
Conclusions of the paper:

COVID-19 vaccination reduced the risk of post-COVID-19 cardiac and thromboembolic outcomes. These effects were more pronounced for acute COVID-19 outcomes, consistent with known reductions in disease severity following breakthrough versus unvaccinated SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Almost a foregone conclusion nowadays, but I remember when the first J&J booster got pulled there was a lot of (imo justified) concern that COVID vaccines might do more harm than good for people with heart problems. This paper seems to conclude that's not the case

koshergweilo··on Untangling Lifetimes: The Arena Allocator
Great article. I haven't yet had the opportunity to use arena allocators, but the article is a solid rundown of why their useful and how they're implemented
koshergweilo··on Intel's Humbling

koshergweilo··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
Yeah that's simply not true, not every Jew labels as such on social media. Also not everyone who is genetically Jewish even identifies as Jewish.
koshergweilo··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
It also never would have been released without gamepass, so we have some evidence that Microsoft acquisitions don't all end terribly
koshergweilo··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
> I do suspect that Microsoft may have been behind Starfield releasing in its half-baked, dumbed down state

Bethesda has been consistently simplifying their games since Morrowind and I don't think they've ever had smooth launch.

While it's true Microsoft rushes many releases, I don't think they're entirely to blame in this case

koshergweilo··on Joys of small game development
> Likewise, Skyrim is a massive open world game that's incredibly linear and repetitive, giving it a low replayability factor.

I may not be the biggest Skyrim fan in the world but this is just patently false from my experience. I know tons of people who've played through Skyrim multiple different times with different playstyles and allegiances.

> GTA San Andreas, RDR2 and GTA V all fall into this rare category of long games that are highly replayable.

I can't say I've ever felt the need to reply any Rockstar games so much as continue playing them. The story missions are tedious compared to just messing around exploring the open world.

koshergweilo··on Meta Quest 3
I completely agree, I just got a used quest2 for $200 and this doesn't see any compelling reason to shell out the extra $300 yet.

Maybe someone's going to come up with a must have AR experience but as someone who mostly uses their quest for sims and gaming, I feel like my money would be better spent on upgrading my computer

koshergweilo··on Steam turns 20 today: “We had to try a lot of different things over the years”
Steam link is great, one of the best reasons to buy a game on steam. It even works on your phone pretty seamlessly

koshergweilo··on America is building chip factories. Now to find the workers
That's just not true. Ever been to San Diego? Little Saigon? Chinatown?
koshergweilo··on Expensive energy may have killed more Europeans than Covid-19 last winter
The age of the average African is significantly younger than the rest of the world. There's a lot of variables to account for, you'd need a proper study, not just a single data point, to determine if omicron is significantly less deadly than older COVID variants.

As for GP's claim that vaccines saved a lot of lives, that's very well supported at this point https://www.commonwealthfund.org/blog/2022/two-years-covid-v....
