kops··on Stripe launches German beta
UBS allows you to open a bank account in Germany and connect it to a Swiss account. You can setup automatic transmission of money from German account to Swiss account every 15 minutes or so.
kops··on Introduction to Recommender Systems
Go for it. It's a great book and except for references to friendster as the big social network and facebook a newbie, nothing else seemed dated to me. Most of the APIs used in the book are still pretty much available except probably(??) delicious API.

Thanks for that link. Chapter 7 helped answer some of the questions I had after reading PCI.
kops··on Why You Should Work From A Coffee Shop, Even When You Have An Office
>> It's a sure recipe to screw up your hands.

I learnt that the hard way and the only thing that helped afterwards was an ergonomic keyboard. For those who don't know, the wrist injury (RSI) is excruciatingly painful and will most likely offset any productivity gains you might have made earlier. Back to the article, I don't quite understand that how "fewer distractions" can immediately be followed by "socializing and meeting new people".

Edit : typo

kops··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
And the http://colorschemedesigner.com/. Two links that may come handy one day isn't a bad return on an investment of 10 minutes of my time. I also bookmarked http://charliepark.org/bootstrap_buttons/ but I suspect i may never get around to using it.
kops··on Show HN: I'm 14, I learned Objective-C, and this is my first iPhone game
well, change that for your kid. Every society builds on the work of previous generations. We in India, are late to the party so yeah, one generation will disappear without enjoying all this, but we can ensure that the next generation won't.

BTW it's never too late. I may not be 14, but I am going to have just about as much fun with my brand new arduino ;-)

kops··on First employee or co-founder?
I guess anyone who can't write code but earns more than a programmer ;-)
kops··on China Skepticism
I learnt long ago that one can not learn anything about China from an Indian, about India from a Pakistani and so on....

I checked the title of the article, read about a para and decided to check the name of the author. That was the end of it.

I hope to hear a few things about China from a chinese one day. Everyone else is either jeolous or afraid or angry or something else that gets his/her skin in the way of a fair argument.

kops··on Immigration will solve the talent war in the valley
Fee is usually peanuts, at least in the govt. colleges. I paid a royal sum of 400$ of tuition fee for a 4 year degree that helps me make way more than that every day. Govt. spent close to 20k on educating me. I did pay taxes in India for 6 years before moving abroad but still that 20k made my life. And that's what I owe to my country. Paying 20k or even 2,3 times that would be an easy exit. The only way to truly pay it back is to make something better in India. But what exactly, is something I think about all day. But I am pretty sure I will have an answer soon.

I won't deny the value of exposure. But I think soft skills and a lot of other things are over hyped. Some of the best engineers I know can't put together a sentence in English.

I can't speak for how it is in US because I haven't been there. But I really can't think of anything that can be done only in valley but not in India. But yeah again, I can't be so sure, because I have seen the things only from one side.

I wonder if you have ever tried to hire a decent programmer or tried to train one.

On seconds thoughts it is actually true for every profession. Ever saw a waiter smearing the shit on a table rather than actually wiping it clean? How much time you think one needs to learn how to clean a frigging table?

Hiring a good professional or training any XYZ to become a good professional, is really not something I will bet my business on.

As an Indian, I am actually pretty happy that not all of our best engineers can leave the country even if they wanted to.

What makes you think that America deserves/needs a good engineer more than India itself?

Disclaimer: I am not in India right now. But having been educated practically for free in a Govt. college, I hope I will be able to repay some of my dues soon. At the very least Govt of India, should be able to tax the runaways like me.

kops··on After Credentials
I tend to agree. But I also think that people who are cunning enough to beat the system are then usually good enough to perform at a job as well provided the right kind of carrot is being shown. A very similar stinking system exists in India where a future of a kid is sort of nailed right after high school. But invariably the guys who crack the engineering entrance were cracking the civil service exam at the end of their graduation. Funny thing is that now a management course is values better than civil services, so again best of our engineers (in terms of resume) are sweeping the top MBA seats. So probably though it is some cram exam or something similar but it seems to get you some intelligent people who are capable of chasing anything. But that's true only for the top layer. Average ivy league student is mobbed big time in the industry by smart kids from unknown colleges. At least half the programmers I admire come from useless colleges.
