komaromy··on Uber Paid Hackers to Delete Stolen Data on 57M People
> this kind of attitude is exactly what got Trump elected

Not really seeing the connection here

komaromy··on China suddenly has way more of the world’s most powerful computers than the US
> China’s president Xi Jinping recently said the country is “taking a driving seat” in fighting climate change

One of the only things giving me hope right now.

komaromy··on San Francisco is one of the worst-paying places in the US for software engineers
I don't think it's an unreasonable decision to make. It's just one of the least productive things you can do if trying to save money.

I'm paying $1400/month for a 17.5'x10' room in a popular part of the city. That's almost $2k/month saved by having roommates.

komaromy··on San Francisco is one of the worst-paying places in the US for software engineers
If the goal is saving money in your 20s, having a 1BR is kind of absurd. You can live in a multi-bedroom apartment/house in SF for much less than that.
komaromy··on Parity Wallet security alert
> Try critical thinking, highly recommended.

This seems unnecessarily combative.

komaromy··on Uncaptcha: Defeating Google's audio reCaptcha with 85% accuracy
What's better?

Hashcash is interesting, but it's probably not applicable to every scenario and it hasn't seen much adoption. There might even be a bit of a stigma now around proof-of-work algorithms because of cryptocurrency mining.

komaromy··on Q&A: Douglas Hofstadter on why AI is far from intelligent
Additionally, we have absurd amounts of information baked into our genes that give us big head starts on network architectures, motion, vision, etc.
komaromy··on Tesla fired hundreds of employees in past week
I don't see how you can possibly construe Kalanick's firing as a result of 'trimming the fat'. He generated controversies for years and he was finally taken out in the face of massive public backlash.
komaromy··on I was in the MAPS MDMA for PTSD study
> and without destructive side-effects

You can mess up your serotonin levels for an extended period of time through MDMA abuse.

I guess that might be a direct effect rather than a side effect, but that doesn't seem to be your point.

komaromy··on The SEC has charged two initial coin offerings with defrauding investors
How far does that go? If an Uber driver goes over the speed limit on the highway, are they not honest?
komaromy··on Why competition in the politics industry is failing America [pdf]
> The supermajority of Americans would decrease or keep the same the level of legal immigration

Evidence?

komaromy··on Ask HN: What's the next big advance in AI you're looking forward to most?
Maybe not the next big advance, but I'll be truly impressed when an AI system with no game-specific prior knowledge is able to complete a game of Pokémon Yellow within a reasonable amount of game time.

It requires:

- Natural language understanding (choosing the right dialog options)

- Interpretation of visual cues (navigating terrain and buildings)

- Hierarchical planning (training certain Pokémon to relatively high levels rather than a scattershot approach)

- Puzzle solving (for gym access)

and quite a bit more.

komaromy··on Show HN: No Coin – A browser extension to block coin miners
> Remember that porn sites are always the front line of innovation on the web

Often stated, rarely with any actual support.

komaromy··on Wind Energy Is One of the Cheapest, and It's Getting Cheaper
Maybe if it was millions, but thousands of birds is a rounding error.
komaromy··on The Last Glacier of Venezuela
I'm not so much sad about it as scared that it's going to cause a near-extinction of humanity. I'm confident that the biodiversity of the planet will recover in the long term.
komaromy··on Why Deep Learning surprises me
Could be! We'll need a volunteer comfortable with having their neuronal weights experimented on.
komaromy··on Why Deep Learning surprises me
> Computers understand things as well as us, perhaps better.

If this was limited to chess, I would unquestionably agree.

If it was limited to image recognition, I would tentatively agree, although things like [0] make me cautious (admittedly, that was from March, and I'm not familiar with progress since then).

However, the author seems to be generalizing beyond those two domains, to the limits of human understanding. That seems like a couple-orders-of-magnitude leap too far to me. For example, I don't know of any autonomous system capable of understanding a short novel with simple language and writing a one-page summary of it, as might be expected of a human ten-year-old.

komaromy··on Ethereum White Paper – annotated version (2015)
The Ethereum white paper was published in 2013.

The events surrounding TheDAO, which the annotations mention, occurred in 2016.

I'm not sure where the 2015 in the HN title is coming from.

komaromy··on Evercoin: A cryptocurrency exchange platform
Shapeshift is very convenient but the fees are exorbitant compared to other platforms.
komaromy··on Airbnb dominated by professional landlords
It seems like you should take into account the cut that a hotel chain extracts from each franchise to make a fair comparison.

I don't have a good sense of how much that is.

komaromy··on Master Card, Cisco, and Scotiabank Join the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance
Regardless of your opinions about Ethereum, its origins were decidedly non-corporate.

Serpent is outdated; Viper is an up-and-coming replacement.

komaromy··on Potential Presidency for Zuckerberg?

First link I found.

komaromy··on Potential Presidency for Zuckerberg?
Personally, I think that the United States has systematically mistreated black people for centuries and not acknowledging that such problems still exist is willful ignorance.
komaromy··on Potential Presidency for Zuckerberg?
His treatment of the press corps has been more or less abysmal, but he does seem to be one of the less destructive cabinet members.
komaromy··on Tesla hires Andrej Karpathy
Also, this is very impressive for someone who finished his PhD less than two years ago.
komaromy··on Tesla hires Andrej Karpathy
I imagine Pieter Abbeel and the rest of the gang will be able to carry on in his absence.
komaromy··on Tesla hires Andrej Karpathy
Interesting, to move from an Elon-Musk-chaired non-profit to an Elon-Musk-owned for-profit.

komaromy··on Why Ethereum is outpacing Bitcoin
Hundreds? I'd struggle to name twenty and I consider myself reasonably knowledgeable about the scene.
