komaromy··on GPT-5
Anyone more than ~300 points below the players can only contribute to the discussion in a superficial capacity though
komaromy··on Cozy video games can quell stress and anxiety
I hear your point, but there's literally a homeless NPC and an NPC suffering from combat PTSD. Another way of looking at it might be that you're empowered to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those people which feels good.
komaromy··on Cardiac arrest deaths among marathoners have decreased, study finds
What kind of 5k time did you hit with that training?
komaromy··on Meta is killing off its AI-powered Instagram and Facebook profiles
Big tech would never ship anything that fast.
komaromy··on Vernor Vinge has died
Deepness was well worth it.

Wheel of Time, on the other hand, I was very glad to give up on right around the same point as you.

komaromy··on West Point discovers time capsule from 1828
There would have been some students at West Point in 1828 whose families owned slaves. Slavery was only abolished in New York State one year prior to this. "Incessantly racist" is probably underselling it.
komaromy··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
That your situation is of a different magnitude (and it sounds terrible; I'm sorry) does not make the relative change in another person's life any easier.
komaromy··on Facebook reportedly laying off thousands of employees
> Name one new product that Facebook built from scratch (did not acquire), launched, and made a sustained success of since their original social network.

Marketplace?

komaromy··on More Subprime Borrowers Are Missing Loan Payments
I'd be more open to this if we hadn't already seen wild swings in the crypto market (BTC is down ~50% from its 12-month peak) without much in the way of broader implications.
komaromy··on An Algorithm for Passing Programming Interviews (2020)
> I can get hired as a software engineer wherever, but I’m only mediocre at doing the job.

I feel exactly the same.

Mind if I ask how you deal with this?

I recently left software (not sure if temporary or permanent yet) and I'm pursuing tutoring in an unrelated field. So far I'm liking it more because I feel better than mediocre.

komaromy··on Pinterest commits to spending $3B with AWS through to 2029
> For AWS, it allows them to make hardware investments early on

I can't imagine this deal (signed in April 2021) has that much impact on either AWS's hardware budget or their usage projections.

komaromy··on Tencent deploys facial recognition to detect minors gaming at night
Are there minors on the top-level Chinese teams?
komaromy··on No evidence UFOs are alien craft, unclassified US intelligence report to reveal
> aliens being here would imply FTL is possible

Why? There are plenty of stars within a sub-light-speed radius since events that could've announced us to the galaxy: advent of radio, first nuclear tests, etc.

komaromy··on Ask HN: How can a unhireable person get a job?
If you read the rest of the sentence GP was correct
komaromy··on Ask HN: How can a unhireable person get a job?
> The GP has put a "your" instead of "you're" in (almost) the very next sentence

Correctly so

komaromy··on Fastest ants in world found in northern Sahara, researchers say
Where do they say that?
komaromy··on Restricting Manhattan’s 14th street to buses has been a success
On a per-unit basis, sure. There are way more cars than buses or delivery trucks though.
komaromy··on Kriegspiel
ICC used to have it (probably still does)
komaromy··on Aggressive Chess Openings (2012)
The Bilbao Chess Masters [0] used a 3-1-0 scoring format.

komaromy··on Up to one million species are on the verge of extinction, U.N. panel says
Collective action has worked in the past. We did it with CFCs.
komaromy··on Facebook pressured Canada to ease up on data rules, U.K. reports say
The latter part is italicized in the GP.

I don't really understand the legality argument though. Canada is a sovereign nation.

komaromy··on John Giannandrea named to Apple’s executive team
This is giving them a lot of benefit of the doubt. Do you have any evidence?
komaromy··on Lack of progress exposed by the Canary MacGuffin
> his

her

komaromy··on Android: The word Google didn't say during the Pixel 3 event
I think they meant Pixelbook.
komaromy··on Stripe donates $19,999 to “No on Prop C”, avoiding ethics disclosures
This made me laugh because it's maybe the first negative piece that I've ever seen about Stripe that wasn't "they stopped processing my payments for reasons that I don't like". The delivery is very good.
komaromy··on Huawei caught cheating performance test for new phones
I don't see why an earnest benchmarking firm would let manufacturers know details like the name of the testing app.
komaromy··on Perceived Physical Activity and Mortality: Study
I recently acquired a DeskCycle and so far it seems like a great solution to this problem. It's much cheaper and less bulky than a treadmill desk and fit under my existing desk with minimal reconfiguration.

The only problem is that I now have to wear shorts to work or I get excessively sweaty during the day, so it may not be feasible in less permissive work cultures.

komaromy··on Our Early Ancestors Stalked Eight-Foot-Tall Sloths
> pinnacle of nature's great evolutionary process

> bunch of bastards to most life on Earth

seem almost synonymous, unfortunately.

komaromy··on Ethereum Foundation Releases Alpha Casper Proof of Stake Testnet
> The sole way a government can kill it -- any government -- is to invest >$2B into getting >51% hash power, then launching coordinated malicious doublespends for the purpose of shattering faith in bitcoin.

How much hashing power resides in China? I was under the impression that it's >50%.

It would cost the Chinese government a lot less than $2B to raid all those farms and take their equipment.

komaromy··on Write your next Ethereum contract in Pyramid Scheme
I've long wanted to be able to make a "The Year of Linux on the Blockchain" post title.
