kolev··on Why I am happy downgrading from a $500 to a $75 smartphone
Just like with Chrome, Google keeps bloating and bloating. Nexus 6 doesn't last even 4 hours for me. It just sits silently in my pocket and dies without much fanfare. I have basic Google apps, Facebook, Twitter, and a few more. I don't do anything, and when I look at battery breakdown, it's Gmail and Inbox that use more than 20% of the power. Every time I need to go outside of home for more than a couple of hours, I get anxious as I know my phone will give up on me and I don't like carrying power reserves, cables, and all that we shouldn't be doing in 2015!

In general, Android keeps disappointing as there are such idiotic problems that I wonder if Android engineers actually use Android phones in real life. For example, taking videos since day one is a huge pain. You start shooting a video, and then you start cursing shortly after, because background apps kill video quality. How hard is to get this simple thing - shooting videos is a CPU-intensive job, pause everything else until the video is done? This is one of the many issues, I just recently struggled with shooting videos and decided to buy a camcorder again to use for the more formal events and use the phone only spontaneously.

kolev··on I am done with Google Chrome
Chrome suffers from gluttony. I need to restart it 10-15 times a day as it starts using gigabytes of memory. When I have 10-15 tabs open, my MacBook Air fan is always on. Safari is the best. For tabs with the same URLs, it uses times less memory and CPU. I've used FirefoxDeveloperEdition for a while and I still prefer it over Chrome. I only got mad once as One-Tab data file (a single JSON) got wiped out, and a few thousand links disappeared from this universe forever with no way to restore it. Then I spent the last four months using Chrome and I'm going back to Firefox, which has the best balance of features and gluttony. I really had a much higher opinion about Google's engineering talent, but the growing pile of crap that Chrome is becoming is starting to stink beyond tolerance.

kolev··on Build Apps for Cars on the New Automatic Developer Platform
Never said it's most basic, but it's basic across the globe. Only in America a car per person is the most common case. I do live in Orange County where there are more cars than people, but I work from home and I don't need to maintain a car that stays in the garage 99% of the time.

How do I expect it to work? I do have an NFC tag in the car where the person driving places the phone. Automatic can ship with a sticker tag like that.

Request a Massdrop here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/automatic-smart-driving-assista...

P.S. You're right - I got a $20-off loyalty discount. Thank you, Automatic! It's definitely worth the upgrade at least for having the built-in GPS!

kolev··on Show HN: Shogun – drag/drop page builder that plugs into your website
Well, based on my experience, the pricing is way above the expectations - there were similar tools priced at $10-15/month with no limits, and even they weren't very successful.
kolev··on Show HN: Shogun – drag/drop page builder that plugs into your website
Nice, but so expensive!
kolev··on Build Apps for Cars on the New Automatic Developer Platform
You should offer discounts to all who kickstarted your product. I'm also disappointed and don't look at the app anymore as it's missing trips and because we share a car with my wife, trips either get registered to her or my phone when we're in the car together. Haven't you thought about this basic use case?

"Only" 5% fee? When you have 15-25% markup (I think more than that is criminal), "only 5%" is blood sucking.
kolev··on Fish shell
I understand that, but my point was that Fish is yet another big missed opportunity.
kolev··on Fish shell
Fish is definitely good, but not great enough to justify a switch from Bash. I maintain tens of thousands of lines of Bash scripts and was considering switching to Fish once, but decided it wasn't worth it.

When you compare the *nix shells to PowerShell, they feel prehistoric. We all use grep, sed, awk, and the likes, but don't you get tired of having to deal with unstructured data and gross limitations of the shell like basic data structures. Yes, the purpose of the shell is to be quick and dirty, but it doesn't take that much to add some programming sanity and some standards for structured data! There's a port of PowerShell to Mono, Pash [0], but it's so heavy in terms of requirements and has somewhat unclear future. Of course, there's also Xonsh [1] and Xiki [2], but they are pretty new.

kolev··on Is Pop Music Getting Less Intelligent?
You can't downvote the truth, pop fans!
kolev··on Is Pop Music Getting Less Intelligent?
Popular music is the music listened to by most people by definition. Most people are not very smart (not to say they are stupid). Therefore, pop(ular) music will never be intelligent as it needs to attune to a lot of people that are not that smart. I got tired of the gimmicky pop years ago and switched completely to classical and folk music.

kolev··on Clinkle Implodes as Employees Quit in Protest of CEO
I knew this was going to be a grand failure by simple indications. Their "app" was a total waste of bytes on my phone, even for something as simple, it was buggy and wasteful. Also, their verification system was broken. Never got an SMS and I exceeded their limit of 3 (cheap bastards). I've sent numerous emails, never got a response. A real startup never does this!

Another case of iPhone-first? Not even an email collection for a planned Android version? Thanks, but no thanks!
kolev··on Secure email provider Lavaboom is crowdfunding
I think all these startups fail to realize that people will not leave their primary email provider (for long) and they doom themselves to stay a niche product with diminishing popularity after the initial exaltation.
kolev··on Hyperlapse makes first-person videos smooth and speedy
Yup! And that's not a small thing. More and more companies neglect Android and the web these days with their "mobile first" strategy, which means, iPhone first, in fact, and we should pressure them not to discriminate the majority and a vast share of the influencers as well. In the early days, it was hard to find Android developers, but now they are more and the latest SDKs are much easier to develop and support a multitude of devices. Test on Samsung Galaxy, Nexus, and a few more leading devices, and you still will do better than totally neglecting Android! For smaller startups, I can find some excuse, but for a billion dollar companies like Instagram/Facebook, there's no excuse!
