kolev··on Religion Is Disappearing. That’s Great for Politics
Well, on theory, yes, but in practice, it's a dichotomy. I strongly believe that materialism counters progress. For example, if we all believed in a greater mission for our civilization, all our efforts would be focused on building space ships and space colonization, not wasting efforts in buying a bigger home, a newer car model, buying new fancy clothes, getting a crazy haircut, and so on. Yes, there are people who are not on the either extreme today, but these are not the majority. I am happy that geeks start to embrace minimalism, simplify life, and focus our limited seconds on this planet in something productive, but, again, we're a minority. The majority needs guidance and religion has been effective for the masses so far.

If I have to choose between some pretty acceptable dogmas and the wild materialism, I will choose the first without thinking twice. I will add that I'm an Eastern Orthodox Christian if it matters.

Another oversimplification of the culinary art, but this time - a costly one!

Let's give it one last push! A bit more than 2 weeks and $150K to go: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/theplanetarysociety/lig...

I've paid people outside BofA without paying a penny.
kolev··on Add Amazon root certificates
Let's Encrypt is nice for your web server, but using that certificate at the ELB may not be so trivial. I hope that Amazon will offer free SSL certificates for ELB. Their custom SSL certificates for CloudFront currently cost the outrageous $600/month (well, $20/day), and recently they added free SNI certificates, so, for CloudFront, they still may charge us, but, hopefully, a lot less than the crazy $600!

I think those targeting teens should learn that teens change their minds like they change their styles - founders, sell before you get of fashion!

kolev··on Developer Preview of AWS SDK for Go
Project-wise? - Most definitely! Globally? - Not common practice, but also preferred to avoid collisions.

The redditification via downvotes here every single time makes me applaud Facebook for only allowing positive votes.
kolev··on Erik Satie: Velvet Gentleman
Satie is one of my favorite composers. I'm happy to see others giving him the respect he deserves.
kolev··on Conquer: The Debit Card That Builds You Credit
Not a bad idea - in fact, it's much better than a secured credit card.
kolev··on Developer Preview of AWS SDK for Go
Didn't see that, but I think it would be nice to give credit until the first stable release.
kolev··on Developer Preview of AWS SDK for Go
No credit or good words for Stripe where this originated?

Because if not run in a container, you should put things that upgrade Requests in a venv at least otherwise you may end up breaking apt.
kolev··on Hound voice search NLP demo [video]
How can I cut in line and get an invite? I find it a bit unfair that those who supported SoundHound didn't get any special treatment.
kolev··on Ballparking Ello's active user statistics
People are not gonna leave Facebook anytime soon, sorry. I am very open-minded and I won't either - I can only imagine the more conservative or those who don't know about alternatives. It took many years for people to switch from email to Facebook - I'm sure most of them won't "invest" time in anything else. The "social network" is where your friends are and most of mine are on Facebook, so, I have no choice pretty much.

kolev··on Google Will Launch Google Photos, a Photo Host With “Unlimited Storage”
Well, to me personally, it doesn't matter what the limit is - I just want to have the originals untouched, i.e. lossless storage.
kolev··on Google Will Launch Google Photos, a Photo Host With “Unlimited Storage”
Actually, it's unlimited for "high resolution" versions, not for the originals, which is sad. I guess I will stick with Carousel or Flickr.
kolev··on Amazon launches same day delivery for Prime customers
True. Amazon's CMS is pretty old-school, but let's not blame Java like one of the commenters did earlier.
kolev··on Amazon launches same day delivery for Prime customers
Never had that, but it probably varies by location. In fact, often Amazon would deliver earlier like on Sunday.
