kolanos··on Svelte 5 Released
Any recommendations for component libraries for Svelte?
kolanos··on The ACF plugin on the WordPress directory has been taken over by WordPress.org
Ghost (and similar companies) probably can't believe their luck with this Wordpress debacle.
kolanos··on WordPress Drama: From the Sidelines
If their name was "Wordpress Engine", I think you'd have a point. But I don't think the use of "WP" has the same implication. Why would Wordpress proper abbreviate their own name like that?
kolanos··on WordPress Drama: From the Sidelines
> I am in no way supporting WP Engine (they seem sleazy and I would never host any of my client sites with them).

What makes them sleazy? I have yet to see anything substantive to suggest WP Engine is acting any differently than any other managed service provider.

kolanos··on SpaceX Pulls Employees from Brazil, Discourages Travel There
My understanding is X followed Brazilian law by deleting the 7 offending posts, but the judge is now acting outside of the law and is demanding things of which there is no legal basis. And apparently this judge has a history of doing things like this in unrelated cases.
kolanos··on SpaceX Pulls Employees from Brazil, Discourages Travel There
Not sure how you arrive at that conclusion? This Brazilian judge has banned X in Brazil, barred Brazilians from accessing X using a VPN (with a $9k fine for violation), frozen the bank accounts of X's legal representative and threatened her with arrest. All without any discernible due process.
kolanos··on Brazil Court votes unanimously to uphold X ban. Users switch to Threads, Bluesky
Apparently Twitter/X did have such a representative and this judge froze her bank accounts and threatened to imprison her.

> “When we attempted to defend ourselves in court, Judge de Moraes threatened our Brazilian legal representative with imprisonment. Even after she resigned, he froze all of her bank accounts,” the post from X Global Government Affairs notes.

kolanos··on Carmack on Oculus, Minecraft, Meta and Microsoft
I remember in the early 90's people similarly would develop motion sickness from the FPSs of the day, such as Doom and Quake.
kolanos··on Releasing everyone's SSN and the hacks used to acquire them
They are absolutely reused. I know this because mine was previously issued to a man who died in the late 50's.
kolanos··on "We ran out of columns"
Yes, there is a good lesson here. If you walk onto a dev team still using stone tools, there is likely a culture that distrusts of new technology, so tread lightly or you may be perceived as a heretic.
kolanos··on "We ran out of columns"
I'm sure I'm not alone in actually having lived such an experience.

I joined a dynamic DNS provider once that had been around since 1999. Their tech, sadly, had not progressed much beyond that point. Showing the higher ups version control was like showing cavemen fire. Of course once the higher ups arranged to have training sessions led by the new hire for the entire dev team the VP of Engineering couldn't handle it and had me fired. Fun times.

> Another point of view is that macOS is great, but all ideas that make it great come from 20 years ago, and have died at the company since then. If Apple were to build a desktop OS today, there's no way they would make it the best Unix-like system of all time.

Many of those ideas came from NeXT, so more like 30 years ago.

kolanos··on AOC's Deepfake AI Porn Bill Unanimously Passes the Senate
But if we make it clear the impressionist is doing an impression of a famous person we're good? Because this law disregards that, you can clearly label something as "fake" and it doesn't matter, you're still liable as long as it appears authentic. A good impressionist would appear authentic.
kolanos··on AOC's Deepfake AI Porn Bill Unanimously Passes the Senate
Do we outlaw highly skilled impressionists? Pretty sure those existed 233 years ago.
kolanos··on AOC's Deepfake AI Porn Bill Unanimously Passes the Senate
There does not appear to be a "naughty" provision only an "intimate" one. What qualifies as "intimate"? Seems dangerously broad.
kolanos··on AOC's Deepfake AI Porn Bill Unanimously Passes the Senate
By my estimation this runs head first into the first amendment and likely does not survive. It also likely violates the equal protections clause as it is only granting "identifiable individuals" (which does not appear to be defined?) special rights.

There is a mountain of case law that states that public figures have limited protections from criticism, mockery, etc. I am not sure humiliation will hold up any better.

They likely knew this as they add this at the end:

> If any provision of this Act, an amendment made by this Act, or the application of such a provision or amendment to any person or circumstance, is held to be unconstitutional, the remaining provisions of and amendments made by this Act, and the application of the provision or amendment held to be unconstitutional to any other person or circumstance, shall not be affected thereby.

Also this definition is still quite broad?

> “(3) DIGITAL FORGERY.—The term ‘digital forgery’ means any intimate visual depiction of an identifiable individual created through the use of software, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or any other computer-generated or technological means, including by adapting, modifying, manipulating, or altering an authentic visual depiction, to appear to a reasonable person to be indistinguishable from an authentic visual depiction of the individual, regardless of whether the visual depiction indicates, through a label or some other form of information published with the visual depiction, that the visual depiction is not authentic.”;

So it doesn't even need to be pornographic, just "intimate".

kolanos··on The Objects of Our Life (1983)
I assume most HNers have seen this, but if you haven't seen The Mother Of All Demos, you owe it to yourself to see what was possible in 1968 but wouldn't be taken seriously for another 15-30 years. [0]

kolanos··on I rebuilt my algorithmic trading platform in Rust. I'm filled with regret
A resource where different programming languages are evaluated like this for different use cases in a balanced way would be useful I think.

Only thing I can think of like this is the "Your Programming Language Sucks" threads that are more meant as humorous hyperbole.

Isn't the iPhone SE, which is now on its third generation, selling pretty well? That kind of made the mini redundant, no?
kolanos··on How an empty S3 bucket can make your AWS bill explode
This is an unauthorized S3 API request. If there is a valid access id and secret attached, bill them for the request.
kolanos··on How an empty S3 bucket can make your AWS bill explode
Or at the very least the requester should b charged for the failed auth.
kolanos··on How an empty S3 bucket can make your AWS bill explode
> Other than deleting the bucket, there’s nothing you can do to prevent it. You can’t protect your bucket with services like CloudFront or WAF when it’s being accessed directly through the S3 API.
kolanos··on We have 4 days to contest KYC being required by internet services
The fourth amendment requires probable cause of a crime prior to being forced to identify yourself. This rule is forcing companies to verify the identities of their customers on behalf of the government for vague national security reasons.
kolanos··on We have 4 days to contest KYC being required by internet services
The fourth amendment?

> “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things ...

kolanos··on We have 4 days to contest KYC being required by internet services
Isn't this a clear violation of the 4th amendment?

> “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things ...

Note it says "the people" and not "citizens of the United States". Everyone has this protection within U.S. borders, SCOTUS has ruled to this effect.

So the government forcing yet more private companies to do their unconstitutional bidding seems like something that should b opposed. I believe banks being required to collect KYC came about through The Patriot Act. If this trend continues, you'll need to verify your identity to use any service.
