koe123··on Mistral raises €3B
My feeling is that its a difference in how funding works in different places. The USA will go all in with the populations pensions on a gamble, the Chinese subsidize. This way of operating is typical for the EU.

> Being one year behind is a skill issue

E.g. if you are an AI researcher in Europe you can just go to USA and make generational wealth. This is not a criticism of the EU model, but rather insane American capex effectively monopolizing.

> I think the most of the money would go to purchase hardware,

So it's not a skill issue?

koe123··on Mistral raises €3B
They’re in the EU. If they are a year or so behind and things start to plateau they’ll catch up. Americans perhaps don’t realize we can also tariff their digital goods to protect our own. There is a scenario where Americans and Chinese foot the bill and EU gets out cheap, e.g. similar to the Apple approach to AI.
koe123··on Mistral raises €3B
Honestly being only 1 year behind makes me an optimist. You’re telling me Europe can be slightly behind with 1000x less capex and way more sustainable economics? Awesome. The world moves slower than AI progresses, I can see a scenario where 1 year isn’t a problem.
koe123··on There Gonna Be a Shortage of Everything
Who else controls it? Are you going to say: 'the government'?
koe123··on There Gonna Be a Shortage of Everything
Yes and I love your framing: “the digital night if long knives”.

I anticipate it to go a typical way: consolidate more and more industries and power, create a hierarchy that benefits from the system such that they keep it in place, and finally start “trimming fat” that “isnt earning their keep”.

The night of long knives could be a final step, far beyond the point of halting the inevitable momentum.

koe123··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Given you’re using big words without explaining them and decorating your argument with patronizing language like “no, just no”, perhaps I should just yield. Even if you turn out to make a convincing argument later, if you really care about convincing people I implore you to think about how condescending your style is…

But if I may explain my thinking essentially from a responsibility perspective your choice is downstream to a whole life of pollution, and of their kids etc. Depending on how many kids the average person has how polluting the average person is, that seems like a significant contribution.

Despite that you attribute to me some sort of strange degrowth philosophy where I am advocating for extinction, all I am saying is that there is a huge impact to overpopulation if we don’t change our habits. If it is sustainable to have more humans later on due to improvements in conduct, by all means I think thats great.

koe123··on There Gonna Be a Shortage of Everything
I’m somewhat bearish, but if AI becomes as good as some think, there is no mechanism in place to redistribute the outcomes.

For now, humans have leverage because our labour is necessary. Wealth is power, and currently attainment goes through interacting with the population: in the simplest case by selling shit. If AI turns out to be the anything machine, and the wealthy need not our labour, what honestly stops them from just taking our stuff by force?

koe123··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
I think your own values are coming through pretty clearly. Understandably, telling a parent they shouldnt have had kids is bound to strike a nerve. Having kids is great. Having kids is also the worst single thing you can do for the environment. Both can be true, and having kids definitely doesn't make someone bad.

However putting kids on a pedestal is silly. If we push our civilization above earths sustainable carrying capacity, we are fucked. In isolation having them is beautiful, in the aggregate it can be bad.

Sorry, but are you questioning the consistency of the trump administration? This is entirely unremarkable.
koe123··on Sovereign Tech Agency invests €500k in Flatpak
Maybe I am vastly underestimating it, but I could imagine this being buildable atop of nix quite straightforward?
koe123··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Implicitly its payment via data but most people don't understand. Theres an asymmetry in the transaction to me.
koe123··on Sovereign Tech Agency invests €500k in Flatpak
Maybe I am too propagandized, but honestly after going Nix I can’t help but feel like this stuff is fundamentally a waste of time
koe123··on Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash
Thats great, although understand that unionizing protects the more vulnerable of also the software engineered. You not advocating for your rights also means weakening others. Is it still self interested to unionized from that perspective?
koe123··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
I hope the EU makes it illegal
koe123··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Did we ever figure out fully decentralized hosting? I.e. nodes so small they cannot sustainably cease and desist?
koe123··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
> This idea that "very large company" -> "productive economy" needs to die.

I am economically naive, but I also have never understood this argument. I asked a Spanish friend what Spain needed, he said “more big companies”. Is it because a big company provides you something closer to a monopoly, and can do so internationally?

koe123··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
While knowledge is always great, I would encourage people not to seek advice from successful people like this (survivorship bias).

Moreover I am not sure it is even good advice? Would you advise a 17 y.o. to learn how transistors work or how to code (i.e. is LLM training the right level in the stack)? LLM training, a discipline where relevant work is already out of reach for 99.999% of budgets really as essential as this post implies?

Likely he means bots, not everything is antisemitism mate
koe123··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
I have a theory that AI code looks good because you never subsequently come up with your own alternative.
koe123··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
“Heh, we’re fucking awful, but check out what THOSE GUYS (who aren’t a first world country with international relationships and funding, i.e. where upholding a similar standard is laughable) are doing”
koe123··on On AI regulation and messaging
Effective altruism is a grift that justifies “get as much money as possible for the individual” so that “you can then so something good with it”. Aha! OK bro you’re saying you should have all the things huh? Anyone into this shit should be immediately distrusted.

koe123··on Controversial creators are benefiting from monetization programs run by Meta
Cool so you can share nazi talking points on TV? You can call for violence on the TV?
koe123··on Controversial creators are benefiting from monetization programs run by Meta
Care to elaborate? You don’t think the creator of “You should self harm: the TV show” would’ve been regulated and held accountable for the detrimental consequences back in the day? Not saying it was perfect back then, but today I do think internet media companies are out of control.
koe123··on Controversial creators are benefiting from monetization programs run by Meta
Every single time historically we have unregulated media you get a shitshow. I think you can blame our societies nonchalant lassez faire attitude to the propaganda profiteering by American big tech for lots of the issues we face today. Honestly: do cocaine laced recommender algorithms really benefit us? I really hope the EU fully bans this stuff.

koe123··on Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science
Thats true, although once it stops being a party trick I expect the LLM proof mining to also be paid by someone else and be expensive as shit, the question same remains: who?
koe123··on Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science
In fact the opposite, look at talks by Peter Thiel. At least he’s being honest. These people are bastards, but for some reason moral goodness and wealth has been conflated leading us to venerate greed.
koe123··on Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science
On the other hand, if provided the financial incentive would mathematicians have solved these problems? Its not hard to imagine a world where some hard problems were not selected by the sparse experts for whatever reason (lack of interest, whatever), which could have been solved if someone was throwing down millions for solutions.
