kochikame··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
And yet we need people to have children
kochikame··on How to reach $1M in annual compensation as an employee
Be really, really good at something extremely rare and extremely valuable, while knowing how valuable that makes you.

Do I get a prize?

kochikame··on Ask HN: What weird or hard problems are you trying to solve?
And talk about a moving target.

Just when you think you've figured something out, spotted a pattern... it changes. Back to square one.

kochikame··on Magic hat leaves behind a transformed craft beer industry in Vermont
The bad IPAs you are talking about have dialed up the bitterness (because they seem to think that's what an IPA is all about) but are unable to create any of that wonderful complexity, aroma and flavor from the hops used. I absolutely hate these simplistic IPA clones, which are mostly found in supermarkets and give IPAs (and craft beer) a bad name.

Bitterness =/= hoppiness

kochikame··on Chekhov's Gun
Same with Lost back in the day.

They littered the first few seasons with all these potentially mind-blowing things and events... and then just never did anything with them. At all.

It’s like they knew about Chekhov’s gun and deliberately decided to blow it off in the biggest way possible.

Interesting. Reminds me that one of the reasons I still mostly like Reddit is because of all of those subs listed, I subscribe to only one (r/mildlyinteresting)

Classic example of why you never, ever look at vanilla served up for you Reddit. Just make it your own.

kochikame··on Ask HN: Advice for passing a FAANG background check with a criminal history
I get your point and I broadly agree, but it's a bit rich to label OP as part of "a huge permanent underclass". He or she is applying for and may well get an extremely lucrative role at one of the most famous companies in the world, putting them squarely in the "1%" of humanity as a whole.

That doesn't scream underclass to me

kochikame··on Quarantine will normalize WFH and recession will denormalize full-time jobs
not sure why this is so downvoted

Commuting (if done by public transport anyway) can be productive time, personal development time, gaming time, reading time etc. It's often the only time people get to themselves all day.

Even if you drive, there are podcasts and audiobooks.

kochikame··on Can software leaders use metrics without damaging culture?
I think metrics are very useful but only when used properly. A lack of metrics means we can't always see what's going on and goals may be unclear; an overreliance on metrics is gameable and too impersonal.

Laos, as the article indicates to some extent, what you measure becomes what matters. As a manager, the metrics you create will (to an extent) help to define what kind of team you run and build.

kochikame··on Galactic Settlement and the Fermi Paradox
There doesn't have to be an economic motive

What if they just feel like exploring, and gaining knowledge, and seeing things no one else has ever seen?

kochikame··on The technology pushed into schools today is a threat to child development
If you live in a Chinese-speaking country then, yes, it's a bad thing.

There are plenty of situations in which you still have to write; at the post office, applying for things, hospitals, places like that. Maybe not every day, I'll grant you that, but you are going to hit barriers when required to write your address or apply for a driving license or similar.

You don't want to be the guy painstakingly copying characters stroke by stroke off his phone while a line grows behind you.

I live in Japan and often regret that my writing is so far behind my reading comprehension. Like, it doesn't need to be AS good, but it would be better if it were close.

kochikame··on Growing evidence that the universe is connected by giant structures (2019)
What if? It is.
kochikame··on Parenting and Panic
Maybe, just maybe, we should ask questions about people who have 10-12 kids or something like that, but a replacement rate of 1-2 kids seems more or less unquestionable to me.

I mean, if you feel you don't want to bring kids into this turbulent, uncertain world, by all means don't, but please also recognize that one of life's biggest purposes is to beget life and we will do nothing (and have never done anything) if we didn't reproduce

kochikame··on Airbnb Announces Intention to Become a Publicly-Traded Company During 2020
Except both the the Lyft and Uber IPOs have been relative flops... not sure how that can be considered "timing it just right"?
kochikame··on I Will Never Understand Dropbox
Dropbox is infamously full of weird edge cases, uncertainty and various sundry other weirdnesses. Lots of people feel that they never quite know where their stuff is, how the versioning works etc.

Google Drive has almost none of these issues.

kochikame··on Show HN: I built a site to compare fees and rates for sending money abroad

kochikame··on Ask HN: What still sucks about remote work?

kochikame··on Tardigrades Were Already on the Moon
Maybe. It's not impossible. Or something like tardigrades, or microbes.

The definite tone of the title is pretty much clickbait

kochikame··on I Used to Be a Human Being (2016)
Really well written article
kochikame··on How to negotiate salary in the software development market of 2019
Is the market really "oversaturated" as the writer claims though?

IDK about the Bay Area, but in plenty of other places there just aren't enough developers to fill all the roles available.

Sounds like "leverage" to me

kochikame··on Every Cancer Patient Is One in a Billion
Yes, the difference in diets and smoking and drinking habits will do that. It's still not pollution in the examples you gave.

kochikame··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
So you're equating using English "properly" with British (specifically, English) English? From a linguistic point of view, you couldn't be more wrong.

No variety of any language is superior to another

kochikame··on Richard Baldwin on the “inhumanely fast” next phase of globalization
So there'll be one or two people taking care of those human decisions when necessary... when there used to be ten people taking care of the whole process.

So it doesn't automate all the jobs out of existence; it just automates most of them out of existence

kochikame··on The drivers of big tech’s growth are losing momentum
Uber and Airbnb are more than just user interfaces. They actually unlock economic potential that was previously left unused.

It's not like all those cars and drivers and spare rooms were being used for anything else before, or offered through some other "interface"

I'd argue that they created both the supply and the demand, so in effect an entire market. That's rather more than an interface
