knightofmars··on Tech Layoffs Keep Coming. Why Is Head Count Barely Budging?
It can go "swell", but when it doesn't then it's a train wreck of the worst sort. And boy do the blame and the finger pointing go into overdrive when the wreck happens.

knightofmars··on Consumers are increasingly pushing back against price increases – and winning
Preface, I'm not a vegan or vegetarian. I also hunt and have killed and butchered animals for meat.

That people consider meat an inelastic good shows a cultural and commercial brainwashing. The idea that an individual or family could go without meat is practically heresy in the United States. Frankly, it's ridiculous and shows a fundamental lack of imagination and willingness to accept that reality doesn't guarantee anyone's ability to acquire cheap hamburger, chicken breasts, bacon, or any other meat.

knightofmars··on Nobody ever gets credit for fixing problems that never happened (2001) [pdf]
Absolutely, this is a often ignored or missed aspect of building systems. Quantifying risk in a fashion that all parties have the same understanding of said risk can be very difficult. There has to be a common language and agreed upon thresholds of risk. After developing shared understanding of risk, it's much easier to highlight and change the behaviors of individuals and the teams.

This is absolutely not petty, you are doing your job (to provide value to the organization) and doing it extremely well. The work you are doing provides more value to your organization than you seem to realize. If I were your manager I would be pushing to get you a raise/promotion with this as the reason.

knightofmars··on LockBit says it's leaked 50GB of stolen Boeing files after ransom fails to land
It's still impossible to prove the files were deleted even if they don't release after the initial payment. All it takes is a single individual in a group to make a backup or have a default policy of keeping a backup "just in case".

One should assume at this point that it's not a question of whether the files will be leaked but when.

knightofmars··on Ask HN: For older devs, do you feel like you have missed your prime time?
This surprises me. Having a security background in software engineering is worth an exceptional amount to the right parties.
knightofmars··on Ask HN: For older devs, do you feel like you have missed your prime time?
Prime has no other meaning than your expectations of success and when you've achieved them. Getting to know yourself and being comfortable with what it is that you want to do is the most important thing you can do in your life. Worrying about your "prime", sounds more like buying into a hype cycle than anything.

On a personal note, every step of my career has been forward and also unexpected. What I envisioned myself doing and what I ended up doing were two different things. And yet I'm happy and successful. Age 41.

knightofmars··on Once hailed for decriminalizing drugs, Portugal is now having doubts
I suspect this is a case of under communication on both are parts.

What I saw, you ended on a very vague set of statements that I assume were supposed to support that you were saying.

"Alcohol was far more popular and consistently harmful..."

Implication of alcohol being more harmful without evidence to support the claim.

History tells us lots of stories. For example, just because the temperance movement existed doesn't mean anything other than a bunch of people got it in their head that alcohol was the devil's drink and caused all of society's ills.

You also ended with an appeal to emotion, "Just ask the wives..." Instead of again supporting your claim that alcohol is more damaging with evidence.

To be clear, I'm not saying alcohol is or isn't more damaging. I'm saying that there isn't any evidence in these comments (yours and others) to support a claim of "X being worse than Y".

knightofmars··on Once hailed for decriminalizing drugs, Portugal is now having doubts
Alcohol is a potential catalyst and not a cause in these situations. There are underlying problems with people's psyche that lead to abusive outcomes. Add in centuries of religion supporting and encouraging the beating of wives and children who don't submit it's no wonder we as a species ended up where we are. Even Ghandi who was teetotaler hit his wife.

Point being, like anything, it's complex. Yes, alcohol is a factor in abuse. But it's not the cause.

knightofmars··on Don't Take VC Funding – It Will Destroy Your Company
Lots of people say they would do the right thing when a situation arises that requires it. But the greedy part of the human brain is very good at rationalizing why the altruistic path isn't the best path. Imagine an inner dialogue, "Why should I settle for 10 million dollars instead of 50 million? I own the company, I made the most sacrifices, everyone else just road my coattails to success. They'll still get something but I deserve the most."

This is why we should never trust anything that isn't in writing. No matter how many times someone promises to "do good by you" there will be a moment where that promise won't mean a thing or will be interpreted to have meant something different.

knightofmars··on Shifting views about psychedelic drugs require a new category for them
You are implying a 1:1 relationship with good experiences and bad experiences. That's not how drugs work. It is important to know the actual reality of this type of ratio so that individuals who are looking to use a drug of this nature can be well informed.
knightofmars··on Dating, education, and sex ratios
The opposite side, consider the fact that overpopulation leads to the inability to access the activities and adventures a person may want to enjoy. Imagine a campfire, throughout the night you'll have to move the dwindling coals closer together because the forest has been stripped clear and there's no more wood to add.

In this world, the parasitic nature of individuals on the environment robs it of its bounty.

knightofmars··on Prop. 12, on humane sale of pork in California, upheld by Supreme Court
Why? Because everyone is entitled to cheap pork?

Nobody is entitled to anything other than an equal dispensation of protection, rights, privileges, and advantages.

Protein is prevalent in many forms and to exclude a significant portion due to dietary familiarity is the problem.

knightofmars··on Scaling up the Prime Video audio/video monitoring service and reducing costs
I agree, but aside from it being seen as "cool", what drives some engineers to go microservice first architecture is having experienced the inability of an organization to acknowledge that they actually do need to re-write a monolith as two or more services or undergo a general re-architecting of the monolith. Getting buy-in from the business is extremely difficult as clearly communicating the actual effort and impact that re-architecting the monolith would require is nearly impossible. This is usually due to poor separation of domains via lack of modules within the monolith, spaghetti code, circular or other strange dependency trees, tables with relationships or data that should never have existed in those tables, and a whole other set of other bizarre issues that were due to lack of planning and general discipline by engineers along the way.

If you have a microservice first architecture, the perception is, it's easier to describe effort to re-write an individual service or split it into two services as there is a clearly delineated body of work. Bizarre service-to-service dependencies may still exist and a poorly implemented microservice architecture is still a potential challenge.

Point being, organizations incentivize bad economic decisions on the part of engineers through the inability to recognize that rework is a necessary aspect of developing software and by constantly eschewing rework in favor of feature delivery it sends a strong message to the engineer about what to prioritize.
