km3r··on S.F. says incidents by Cruise, Waymo driverless taxis are ‘skyrocketing.’
I hadn't even considered a bike in SF due to the rampant theft, despite not having a car and taking MUNI/BART daily. And SF is not alone in this. As a country we need to figure out how to bring out crime levels down.

The few times I do call an Uber (or Waymo/Cruise if available), I am likely intoxicated or needing to get somewhere ASAP. We are very far away from public transit always be faster and biking while intoxicated is very unsafe, especially when sharing the road with human (and AI) drivers.

km3r··on GPT-4 API General Availability
So you'd rather OpenAI crush all business in the area by outcompeting them for workers, ensuring local businesses struggle to hire?
km3r··on Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting Instagram account, Meta says
Rushing it out the door when there is a massive Twitter (and to a lesser extent Reddit) population that is ready to jump ship now seems like the right move to me. You can always add features after, you can't ask for better timing than this.
km3r··on GPT-4 API General Availability
> Use of cheap human labor in developing countries through shady anonymous companies (look up the company Sama who pay Kenyan workers about $1.5 an hour).

What is wrong about injecting millions into developing nations?

The rest I agree with, although I don't think it was ever really 'open' so its not getting shitty, it always was. Thankfully, "there is no moat" and other LLMs will be open, just a few months behind OpenAI

km3r··on What character was removed from the alphabet? (2020)
I know it's pronounced 'the', but 'yee' is more fun
km3r··on Illinois prohibits weapons, facial recognition on police drones
Am I the only one that is OK with CCTV + facial recognition? Seems like a great way to tackle crime without having to involve potentially deadly encounters with police. Ya there are ways it could be abused, but I assume I have no privacy (as does the law) when I am in a public space. A lot cheaper than cops too. Put laws and systems in place to keep the data secure and require warrants to access the data.

(No lethal weapons on drones please though, although I could see a case for riot control drones, not sure where you would draw the line on what is a weapon.)

km3r··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
There are significantly more mods than reddit employees. Reddits already struggling to be profitable and you think they can afford to pay moderators?
km3r··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
The polls I've seen on subs after the reopened have been largely in favor of continuing the blackout. The community supports this, adding a more direct ability to remove mods is just going to be abused by brigading.
km3r··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
Yet every sub poll I've seen after the blackout has been >50% support to continue it. The community wants the blackout.
km3r··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
Yet still a significant portion of comments come from third party app users. Reddit wants to control how I post my likely close to 1000 comments a year, I just won't comment then. The content doesn't come out of this air, it comes from a handful of power users that are far more likely to use third party apps.
km3r··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
Reddit claiming removing mods is for the community, yet the community is against these API changes, and seems to support the blackouts from all the polling i've seen.
km3r··on San Francisco library turning off WiFi at night to keep homeless from using it
It is a health issue. But it clearly puts you in a state of mind where many people are unwilling to get help. Criminalizing drug trade (and to a far lesser extent, use), allows the government to get people the help they need. Yes we need more medical and addiction care focused prisons, but for now, the streets aren't working.
km3r··on San Francisco library turning off WiFi at night to keep homeless from using it
What else do you recommend a library do (within their limited budget), while also solving the issue that these encampments are making the library unsafe and dirty?
km3r··on San Francisco library turning off WiFi at night to keep homeless from using it
Or we are demanding real solutions. A library is not a homeless shelter. If the homeless population nearby is getting in the way of provide safe and clean access, the library should seek remedies to that.

The progressive attitude of "any opposition to a left wing idea is a right wing talking point" is so problematic towards finding *effective* progressive solutions. We NEED to critique our ideas and programs. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. And SF is on that road if we don't figure out something more effective.

SF spends more per homeless individual than most other US cities. It's not a matter of "we could solve this if there wasn't as much opposition to spending taxpayer money". Whatever we are doing now isn't working, and it's not some right wing talking point to acknowledge that. SF has wasted billions on bandaids to our housing crisis, it's time we find solutions that actually work on getting homeless people housed with access to the care they need.

km3r··on The Reddit blackout will continue
The users that provide the content are pissed too. A significant portion of them will see the third party app they use die. I don't want to use their official app, and would be willing to pay a fair rate to do so, but their API prices are way beyond a fair rate.

Social media, especially a platform like reddit, has a special relationship with users. They aren't customers. You need the people who post, comment, and moderate or the platform dies.

km3r··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
Where did you get that number from? Apollo dev's calc put it more in the range of $1.40/ YEAR not month. That makes it a 20x premium, not 2x.

km3r··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Having an app store != locked down. AFAIK, you can run any software you want on a Steam deck without any hacking needed. Can you say the same for any non macOS apple product?
km3r··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
I'm glad they aren't just buying up existing housing stock. We have a housing shortage, and subsidizing demand will just further send prices up for everyone else. Net new housing, even if more expensive, will do far more good overall.
km3r··on Ask HN: Where have you found community outside of work?
Lightning in a Bottle was amazing this year. Something about camping in a harsh environment really brings you closer with your friends, and the whole community there is so welcoming and energizing. Music has been bringing communities together for 1000s of years, and festivals like that really show how true that is.
km3r··on Update on Sharing
I don't get why they can't just film a finale for the cancelled shows. One last episode to wrap up the plot lines.
km3r··on NYC skyscrapers sit vacant
I think we as a society would benefit from evolving the "third place". A place that is neither work nor home where you can socialize. Like it or not, lot of people want remote work, so the best path forward is to adapt.
km3r··on Supreme Court rules Andy Warhol’s Prince art is copyright infringement
Training the model can still be argued fair use. Using the model to recreate copyright works is not.
km3r··on Steam Now Offers 90-Minute Game Trials
As someone who loves the occasional tight indie game that only has 2 hours of content, I agree. A game like "A short hike" couldn't exist if every game had this 2 hour policy. Hopefully its an opt-in system for game devs at the very least.
km3r··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
We have spent the last 2 decades decreasing punishments. It is not work in real life.

Punishment works better than whatever we are doing now.

km3r··on TikTok: Is this a national security scare or is something else going on?
Its easy to eat the other teams lunch when you have an unfair market advantage of 1 billion users none of the rest have access to.
km3r··on How TikTok Broke the Ad Business
It is not a free market. TikTok has access to a billion extra users that the rest of the world does not have access to. That enables easier testing of features, lower margins, and more content.

A country should only allow foreign businesses in from countries that would allow that same business in from our country.

Pretending the CCP subsidized enterprise is a free market is just wrong.

km3r··on We can't all use AI. Someone has to generate the training data
Yeah I don't have any problem with that too. If a cop has a right to see me, he should be legally allow to record me (and in fact would prefer all cop interactions were recorded). A camera + AI allows for massive cost savings on basic police work, enabling police to be more efficient. A camera has a lot less bias than a cop.
km3r··on We can't all use AI. Someone has to generate the training data
The cat is out of the bag, and I don't see any reason training should be any more controlled than me personally viewing something and 'training' my brain on it. Using either to duplicate copyrighted works is already clearly illegal.
km3r··on A low latency guitar effects processor suitable for running on a Raspberry Pi
I was thinking about something similar but wondering if you could do it over Ethernet and the VST API with low enough latency to be useful for a DAW. Or if you can figure out a way to make latency less of an issue all together and enable remote VSTs.
km3r··on Tell HN: My son is being bullied for owning an Android phone
Seems like the kid never wanted an android phone. Why buy him one when there are plenty of iPhones at S20 prices? Don't force your kid to go to church, and don't make them choose your ideological side on Android vs iPhone.

And I say this as someone who really doesn't like Apple and has only had Android phones.
