kloncks··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2013)
- Ribbon (https://www.ribbon.co) is hiring. Full time in San Francisco. No remote. Front-end Developers, Designers, Rails Devs.

- Looking to add to our team of five. Ribbon is building a frictionless payments and ecommerce platform that does the transaction wherever the buyer is. Imagine purchasing an item without leaving Facebook, or buying directly from within the Twitter stream, or through email. That's what we're building for consumers, businesses and developers in an elegant way with a huge focus on design.

Looking for someone excited at the stage we're at

- dealing with first customers, ramping up traction, figuring out new product direction and features - and also excited about the challenges we'll face, like making payments simplified for consumers and dealing with huge technical issues with fraud and building payments infrastructure.

We went through AngelPad in the fall and raised a big seed round from great investors. Awesome office in San Francisco, penthouse floor with views of twin peaks and the ballpark in soma.

- Some recent press coverage for more details: http://techcrunch.com/2012/11/20/ribbon-a-bit-ly-with-paymen.... http://gigaom.com/2012/11/20/shopping-everywhere-ribbon-turn....

kloncks··on Class action lawsuit against Instagram
I get the criticisms against Instagram. There's a lot of validity there. But seriously, at the end of the day, if you don't like the changes...stop using the service. There's no entitlement here.

kloncks··on Ask HN: How does it feel to be founder of a popular Startup?
Someone once told me that success and fame don't change a person. They merely amplify that person's qualities; you're still the same person.

Also. One of the advantages of Silicon Valley being an insular bubble at times is that however successful you might be, there's someone within a few square miles who has accomplished more. It's easy to get constantly humbled.

For every Drew Houston there's a Mark Pincus and for every Mark Pincus there's a Bill Campbell.

Obviously take everything I say here as just my own personal experience and my company is very very very early. But these are just some personal notes & thoughts.

kloncks··on The Real Silicon Valley
I would argue it's easier to go all with a smaller hand.
kloncks··on How to Download Your Instagram Photos and Kill Your Account
Wouldn't the simplest fix be to let users opt-in to this?

Hell, opt me in automatically by default. But maybe this is the compromise, that way Instagram can make money (as they should) and users don't feel ripped off.

kloncks··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
What's the alternative? A cool and useful product that makes revenues how? How do you propose that Instagram actually make money?

Not attacking. Just wanted to hear more specific thoughts.

kloncks··on Welcome Guido
I can appreciate that. Thanks for keeping me on my toes there ;)
kloncks··on Welcome Guido
Also a Rubyist here. Not trying to start a war.

Take "the three top web languages of [blank]" as "the three [descriptive adjective] of [list]"

No one can argue that PHP, Ruby & Python are some top of the top languages on the web. Didn't mean for "the" to seem as limiting as you took it.

kloncks··on Welcome Guido
For the creators of the three top web languages of PHP, Ruby, and Python:

- 2/3 currently work for YC companies.

- 3/3 have at one point worked for a YC company.

That I find extremely impressive. Speaks a lot to the calibar of the YC program. A big congrats to Dropbox too! :)

kloncks··on The product lens
The best investors should understand this too, which is why you should pay special attention in the financial lens to go after only smart money. Otherwise, you could be pushed for more vain metrics rather than the real ones, like product & customers.

kloncks··on Ask HN: Are you alone in San Francisco on Thanksgiving?
This is beautiful and shows one of the coolest parts of a great community like Silicon Valley. Thanks for giving back, Matt.

I sincerely hope all of you have a great Thanksgiving!

kloncks··on Chris Dixon Joins Andreessen Horowitz
I wonder what this means for Founder Collective?
kloncks··on Show HN: I'm 15 years old, and I released my first NPM module: Wizardry
Ironic to see "bash" in your username.

C'mon dude. 15-year-old kids don't normally write modules like this. I'm happy he's writing good code at his age. A lot of us starting programming when we were younger. I'll proudly encourage others to do that and then be there congratulating them when they accomplish that.

kloncks··on Why Startup Founders are Always Unhappy
I never understand this. Where are all these unhappy founders?

I'm a startup founder myself and I naturally know many others. This is the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Yes, it's stressful. No, I don't know what will happen tomorrow. Yes, it's a lot of work.

But I can tell you one thing. I wake up every day wanting to do one thing: go to the office and work until midnight. Again, this is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

And every other startup founder that I know is the same way.

kloncks··on West Bank Buzz: The Quiet Rise of a Palestinian Silicon Valley
I had the privilege of being part of a delegation of American businessmen sent to the West Bank earlier this month. It was planned by the US State Department in conjunction with the Aspen Institute and we had the opportunity to visit with business leaders, politicians, and startup founders all over the West Bank and Israel.

Very eye-opening. A lot of great innovation in that region (on both sides). Met a team that's independently constructing wind mills in the West Bank to power up to 20% of their energy team. Another that is making custom furniture for small spaces in Gaza.

There were Israeli companies outsourcing to Ramallah instead of Bangalore, and ideas and ingenuity was very impressive. All in all, I was extremely impressed.

The path forward, I've always believed, was rooted in economic prosperity. Nothing creates chaos like poverty with no chances of escape.

kloncks··on Ask PG: Why is Ben Horowitz's startup school 2012 video not available?
Slide deck had something along the lines of, "Property of A16Z. Do not share or redistribute."
kloncks··on Meet the Company Hijacking New York Times Ad Revenue
I'm not sure I agree with that.

When you load the NY Times website, you use up their resources (hosting, delivery, etc) and they're paying some fee to give you the privilege of viewing that page.

They pay for that using ads. Their choice.

You don't like that? Great. Stop visiting that website. That's your prerogative. But to visit the website, use their resources, AND block their way of generating revenue to pay for that...well, that's both immoral and wrong.

kloncks··on Red Bull Stratos Skydive Rescheduled for today
Besides proving our thoughts on what happens to the human body going through the speed of sound, there's an aspect of safety as well.

If successful jumping at 120,000 feet, that means that NASA could deploy these same space suits as an exit plan for astronauts in an emergency.

kloncks··on Red Bull Stratos Skydive Rescheduled for today
12.5 miles is 66k feet. He's at 44k.

EDIT:

But yes, he will also slow down as he goes up. The balloon will also change shape and expand greatly in size.

kloncks··on Red Bull Stratos Skydive Rescheduled for today
Delayed by 20s in case a tragic accident occurs.
kloncks··on U.S. Postal Service To Launch Experimental Same-Day Delivery Service In November
Postmates - for anything - and Instacart - for groceries - are fixing this problem.
kloncks··on Ask HN: Can I visit your startup in SF?
We do payments (https://www.ribbon.co) and would love to show you our offices in SOMA.

kloncks··on After a spectacular crash, Bitcoin makes a surprising comeback
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the others just merely clones of the original Bitcoin, using the same source code? I would still call Bitcoin the only currency, as it's the base they all share.
kloncks··on Stripe partners with Chilling Effects
I believe AngelList also does this with Chilling Effects.
kloncks··on 2012 Startup School, Oct 20 at Stanford
I would assume it's your HN information.
kloncks··on Why I dropped out of college for Y Combinator
I dropped out of school for AngelPad too.

What I've found out is that it's never really about dropping out and the fascination with college dropouts is nonsensical. I never went to college expecting to drop out; the timing just made it happen. Furthermore, my lack of a degree doesn't make me a better or more successful entrepreneur.

Dropping out isn’t an accomplishment, any more than money is a sign of achievement. Sometimes, but not always, it’s simply a symptom of success.

kloncks··on Obvious Corp. backed Branch comes out of private beta
Better interface for one.

Email has notoriously not been updated for a while. I remember when Gmail putting threads as conversations being revolutionary.

kloncks··on Obvious Corp. backed Branch comes out of private beta
I hate to be that guy. (And really, I almost never say this). But, coming from the guys who made Twitter, can we talk about how and why this could possibly be monetized?

Neat idea. Gorgeous design. But how is Branch Inc sustainable?

kloncks··on The computer scientist CEO
I get a lot of the messages behind this article, but it just throws around a lot of claims without any citations or proof whatsoever. Just can't take this seriously.

"she is the first computer scientist (MSCS or higher) hired in as CEO to a Fortune 500 company"

"The most common degree of CEOs hired into Fortune 500 companies is an MBA."

"She is not going to be the mad visionary of Steve Jobs, yelling at everyone while single-handedly designing breakthrough products."
