kleene_op··on Brain FLOPS
I don't think Flops is the adequate metric for measuring how close we are to AGI.

The number of neurons firing does matter, but what matters even more is how they all are connected.

I personally think once we get adequate algorithms and data structures out there, the metric will switch to numbers of lookup operations performed, and floating point operations will just be a multiplicative constant in front of the whole complexity formula.

kleene_op··on We asked 100 humans to draw the DALL·E prompts
I find that one of the biggest clue to distinguish AI generated content from humans is how eyes (if there's any) are drawn.

With AIs like DALL-E, they usually end up looking terribly uncanny and sometimes all over the place.

kleene_op··on No Dislikes has officially ruined YouTube for me

Dear lord, that page sucked the lifeforce out of me. My condolences to those poor souls who worked on that.

kleene_op··on Why Germany won’t keep its nuclear plants open
> made in Germany

Not trying to defend the parent comment going off about bouncy castle, but I have a hard time believing that statement is true. This is the share of photovoltaic pannel production per region.

kleene_op··on Why Germany won’t keep its nuclear plants open
I keep hearing this battery argument but I have yet to see a single country backup its whole network with those.
kleene_op··on Twitter user sentenced to 150 hours of community service in UK
People digging up old stories on Macron's and his wife are anything but concerned about helping justice. They're only interested in proving Macron was abused by his wife so she can get convicted and then he (the victim!) gets hit as a side effect.

People doing that kind crap have no limit to how low they're willing to drop their common decency to promote their shitty political agenda: They spread their lies over social networks, alienate the debate with inane affairs and waste valuable resources from the judicial system.

I'm glad those idiots are getting sued.

kleene_op··on Reasons to not use PCA for feature selection
When you try to approximate your data with a mixture of distributions, say Gaussians for instance, you have to initialize their parameters with some values before running your EM loop.

Finding good ones can be very problematic. The k-means process is a reasonable method to get good enough starting values without having to think/compute too much.

kleene_op··on Reasons to not use PCA for feature selection
k-means are actually useful for bootstrapping statistical mixtures when you don't have good priors.

Just for this convenient use alone I would place them above PCA.

kleene_op··on Bashing the Bash – Replacing Shell Scripts with Python (2017)
Probably something along the line of

  Popen(["the_tool"] + list(Path().glob("*.yml")))
kleene_op··on FDA Approves First CRISPR Cows for Beef
There will always be unknown unknowns, whatever the subject at hand. This is not specific to GMOs and certainly not a good argument against them.
kleene_op··on Stronger hands lengthen your life
Yes. The correct take from this article is to change your lifestyle until you have strong hands if you want to live longer, but don't focus on getting strong hands specifically.
kleene_op··on No is a complete sentence
Yeah, terrible advice.

Saying "no" to other people's requests will put you in a position where you will be told "no" to any of your own.

Unless you're indispensable and never had to ask others for anything this is just career suicide.

kleene_op··on Windows needs a change in priorities
Same experience with my youngest sister.

I bought her a Minecraft account via my Microsoft one, getting her the necessary permission for multiplayer took an hour to do so, parsing through cryptic microsoft documentation which essentially consists of a maze of links that loop back to pages you already visited.

The funny thing is that one of my brother told me before I started that I could just download the pirated client, that way I wouldn't have to pay for Minecraft for the 938th time and the pirated client just works out of the box contrary to the official version.

It'd been years since I had to interact with anything Microsoft, I thought he was exagerating. What a shock when I realized pirates actually do a better job than MS at making their own products accessible.

kleene_op··on A 9-line summary of textbook physics
Simulation hypothesis: It's simulations all the way down. No gods in sight.
kleene_op··on Mapping and Seizing the Oligarchs' Assets
> So now it's just OK to seize private property of individuals without any even pretend due process?

> And now we have american media platforms saying 'yeah, it's fine to call for death to Russians'.

You're absolutely right in both regards but please do not conflate those two.

I'll weep zero tears over Putin's rich friends not being able to play with their yacht anymore, but common Russians having to leave their home country and suffering from heinous mob mentality outside have my dearest sympathy.

kleene_op··on Finland starts much-delayed nuclear plant, brings respite to power market
I'll consider storage a solved problem when we actually have it.

In the mean time, nuclear is a nice thing to invest in.

kleene_op··on Is information the fifth state of matter?
Where the heck is the bottom?

Is there even one?

Do the lambdas just loop back unto themselves??

kleene_op··on Asian-Americans fight back against school discrimination
We'll see if you still think line that lowering the bar is a chance for America when you have to take a plane designed by a 2.1 GPA.
kleene_op··on Russia demands Google restore access to its media YouTube channels in Ukraine
In the face of all those western entities distancing themselves from Russia, I can't fathom a world where invading Ukraine was worth it for Putin.
kleene_op··on No_color
A few more suggestions:

NO_TEXT, NO_TERMINAL, NO_FUN, NO_*, NO_NO

kleene_op··on Push-ups with Python, mediapipe and OpenCV
The fact that you can write such a complex application with so few lines of very clear and comprehensive Python code is simply astonishing.

Coming from a C background, I was getting distressed that all interesting low level libraries in all domains had already been written decades ago, but the field of opportunities they led to in return is a great source of inspiration and motivation!

kleene_op··on Why We Banned Legos (2006)
I found this article pretty hard to read, mainly because of the overly sweet (and indigestible) tone, dripping good-sentiments and smarty attitude displayed by the author.

Legos were among our favorite toys for me and my (6!) siblings. Sure we had a lot of arguments back then about who would get such and such rare pieces. But conflicts between young siblings rarely last long: we would always bargain, negotiate or cheat our way out of status quo and just continue building and playing. That's just what children do.

The author may have felt very smart removing legos altogether from those children and have them discuss about privileges and feelings instead. Sadly, inequalities and conflicts are extremely valuable things for kids to experience (to a reasonable extent of course) if only just for the fact that this is what they'll find outside.

By depriving those kids of situations where they could argue and work out settlements by themselves, and instead expecting them to behave like small adults able to come up with rationals about their supposed privilege or parrot the dominant mantra, you're undermining their ability to tackle real life, to learn how to become fair (and not naive) by themselves.

Sure kids need supervision. But give them too much of it and you'll be doing them a big disservice later.

kleene_op··on No one cares about your redesign
It's a hail mary.

Zuckerberg knows Facebook is turning into an hollow husk of its former self and the metaverse is his last ditch attempt to keep things together.

kleene_op··on Resources to encourage children to learn to code
If your kid is the curious kind who always loves a good puzzle, I would highly recommend you buy him/her Baba Is You on Steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/736260/Baba_Is_You/.

The game is odd but in a cute and charming way; it heavily incentivizes logical and out of the box thinking without looking as dry and austere as real programming; it is challenging, but with a well adjusted difficulty curve; and all in all it is a very fun game, whatever your age.

I bought it for my sister (around 10) and she's had a blast! I don't think she's particularly interested into getting into programming, but I think any children growing up to be programmers would reflect fondly on this game.

kleene_op··on Phenethylamines I have feared and loathed (2020)
And benzodiapeines withdrawal is insanely painful to overcome.

Benzos are bottom of the barrel drugs as far as I'm concerned.

The fact that they are still regularly prescribed by some doctors to the elderly (for no other good reason than to get them off their face) is borderline criminal.

kleene_op··on PDEs you should know
Being familiar with PDEs is useful even without knowing how to solve them.

Just the formulas alone teach you how physical quantities interact with one another and give you great insights on how the universe operates on a fundamental level.

Most people may not be using them at their everyday job, or at all for that matter, but knowing the core ones is just as enlightening if not more than having read major works in Philosophy.

kleene_op··on Nerdle = Like Wordle but with Equations
Wew. That was surprisingly fun!

I managed to do it in three guesses, but man was I slow.

kleene_op··on Ask HN: What are your hobbies?
I started learning Japanese 4 months ago, and tried to invest at least 1h a day decyphering kanjies, learning new words and some grammar.

So far it's going pretty well. I've got half of 常用 kanjies under my belt and ~1500 words of vocabulary that allow me to get a basic understanding of what's going on in easy mangas.

1000 more words and I plan on getting N3 cert.

kleene_op··on People don't want to run their own bank
More so than wanting to run their own bank, I think many people just want to have the possibility to do so.

It's just like running your own server: hard to do, many won't, but the fact that it is achievable using a reasonable amount of resources is a good thing on its own.

kleene_op··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
> I see this kind of alleged puzzlement a lot here and on the internet in general.

Same. Easiest way to fish for upvotes.
