klausnrooster··on Everything Is a Spreadsheet
https://youtu.be/bdfNvYPxkOY. And https://www.felienne.com in general, at least where spreadsheets are concerned. Two monitors - one for Excel, one for the VBE - is not Smalltalk, but it is productive. At least for n=1, since the '90s.
klausnrooster··on Claude for Excel
Thanks for reminding me to check if the REGEXEXTRACT, REGEXREPLACE, and REGEXTEST functions had landed for me yet. They have! Good, because sometime in 2027 the library providing RegEx in VBA will be yanked. https://youtu.be/pGH9LdgkJio
klausnrooster··on Claude for Excel
I'd like to see it compete in the Financial Modeling World Cup, say in Las Vegas this December. https://excel-esports.com
klausnrooster··on Claude for Excel
MS Office Tools menu has a "Spreadsheet Compare" application. It is quite good for diffing 2 spreadsheets. Of course it cannot catch logic errors, human or ML.
klausnrooster··on An Efficient Implementation of SELF (1989) [pdf]
Thank you for your tone. I agree! Had Starting Forth, Thinking Forth, and Elizabeth D Rather books at one time. Reread TCL the Misunderstood (Antirez), every few years for the memoizing bit. Etc.
klausnrooster··on An Efficient Implementation of SELF (1989) [pdf]
I will read it, closely, but was all hopped-up expecting some new implementation, as I am down the Smalltalk rabbit hole lately, including watching lots of old videos. And perusing https://selflanguage.org

klausnrooster··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
Somewhat orthogonal, but if the spider is not a Brown Recluse (if you live where those are), then it is competition for them.

klausnrooster··on Programming languages that blew my mind (2023)
No mention of PicoLisp (application server, embedded Prolog, etc, etc...) or Dylan. No way Teller saw them and they didn't make the list.
klausnrooster··on 'I grew up with it': readers on the enduring appeal of Microsoft Excel
See https://www.felienne.com/public-appearances and ctrl-f for Excel. Especially the videos, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdfNvYPxkOY . Then have a gander at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lambda-function-b...
klausnrooster··on Can logic programming be liberated from predicates and backtracking? [pdf]
Out of my depth here, but I do have 5 Prolog books I can't seem to let go of. I used to dabble. A lot. Out of all my numerous prog-lang infatuations, only 3 have stuck: Erlang, Prolog and Picolisp. At most, 2 degrees of separation between those 3. No one mentioned Picolisp yet, so I have to, because it has a Prolog embedded in it. This seems like an appropriate place to do it.

klausnrooster··on Ryelang asciinema demo: exploring JSON
Exciting! Was Rebol user for years, dabbled in Factor. Picolisp too. All great for interactive use, but the latter two seemed to have more learning curve than I could commit to. Eyeballed R3 and Red-lang but went with Python 2, then 3. Significant whitespace has not grown on me. I prefer my own idiosyncratic indentation convention. Watching your project closely.

Chuck Moore's https://www.greenarraychips.com/ for example?
klausnrooster··on Go: What we got right, what we got wrong

klausnrooster··on Jaq – A jq clone focused on correctness, speed, and simplicity
jql homoiconicity looks rather ... Lispy. Like you could use it on itself, write "Macros", etc.
klausnrooster··on Nature: Programming language to experience the joy of programming
Glad to see things like this. Think Phix is contender in the space. 100% RosettaCode coverage in 2021.
klausnrooster··on Thoughts on real-time data display?
Years ago heard some airports used to use Powerpoint and DDE for flight info displays. Data was coming from ?? probably a mainframe. Haven't looked into it even though I have a use case similar to what fast-food outfits use to coordinate order assembly. Imagine it's not real-time. Might be reasonably fast.
klausnrooster··on Robbie Robertson has died
That little vocal flourish she does after "...stick around", and her expression, sends me into outer space.

Another nice version, although the one you linked is my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph1GU1qQ1zQ
klausnrooster··on Life After Language
My favorite read in, I think, years. Great seed (prompt?) for a novel, lol. Better communication. Improved cognition. No need for paper clips!
klausnrooster··on The electron is so round that it’s ruling out potential new particles
That's all true. I am biased because I am responsible for keeping hundreds of devices calibrated, and keeping a lab within 2C of 23C. The CLT implies that the sample mean is more likely to be close to the true population mean as the sample size increases. Not the same as more accurate. Shame on me!
klausnrooster··on The electron is so round that it’s ruling out potential new particles
My (mis-?) understanding of the Central Limit Theorem is that the average of >30 measurements increases the accuracy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_limit_theorem
klausnrooster··on Portable Django
Tunney-jart, ape, etc are so impressive... I'd like to see some real competition for Access, at least on Linux and/or BSDs. Because Access is untouchable in it's space. Because it _is_ the space. redbean looks very tasty indeed. If it was the foundation of an 'Access-on-GNU/Linux/BSD' that would be very cool.
klausnrooster··on Show HN: Structpad: notepad-database hybrid that helps you use abstract thinking
Very interesting. Call me lazy, but I'd like to see a demo - animation or video to help me grok it. Bookmarking.

Exactly this. Thank you.
klausnrooster··on Intermittent fasting 2 days vs. 1 day per week
For anyone considering zero-calorie fasting for more than 1 day, please read up on it first. Pay special attention to the need for salt. You need to start every day of the fast with a glass of saltwater, on the order of 3 teaspoons of salt. If you take hot baths, you will perspire and need more salt. Take a glass of saltwater to the tub with you. Because if you sweat in the tub there is a good chance walking to the kitchen will be a panic-inducing challenge. Also, it is best to do extended fasts, at least after day 3, on vacation/holiday. You may not feel like doing much.
klausnrooster··on Modelling an Uncertain World
Granted I'm no Pythonista, but I have a little script I wrote years ago in Python 2.7 and again in 3....,uh, 3.8 now. IPython 3.8.10, that is. Use it daily for about 15 years now. Anyway, I wanted to reproduce this gist, due to a fascination with Bayes... I think there is a code step missing. I typed everything in up to the first updated probability distribution. Where the gist shows [0.0, 0.018181818181818184, 0.03636363636363637, 0.05454545454545454, etc..], my repl returns [0.018181818181818184,0.018181818181818184,...0.018181818181818184]. I could tease out how to assign P(m[1])=0 for drawing a red ball, fill in the missing step, but I'll save that for after I Learn Python The Hard Way :)
