kken··on Volkswagen CEO says car giant will overtake Tesla on electric vehicle sales
What unit is "Efficiency" in? Wh/km?

It's interesting that VW seems to use a standardized 82kWh battery back in their MEB platform and achieves basically the same range as the Tesla 3 with 75kWh. Appears this is engineered to the point.

Why is Teslas Efficiency 10% better? My understanding is that they use SiC transistors in their inverter while the MEB uses Silicon IGBTs. A trade-off between reliability (Si), cost (Si), performance (SiC). How much of the difference is caused by this?

kken··on Reincarnating the 6502 Using Flexible TFT Tech for IoT
>The chip achieved a maximum operating speed of 71.4 kHz (at Vdd=3V/Vbias=6V) while consuming a maximum of 134.91 mW. Likewise, the chip can run as low as 10 kHz at 2V while consuming just 11.6 mW.

That's really not that impressive, both in speed and power. You can operate 8Bit MCUs clocked at ~50kHz at 100-200µW.

I wonder what that the technology is good for? IGZO is good for large area electronic with low leakage, so I guess it could be used for sensor arrays and similar where you need distributed circuits. Of course, IGZO is already used for display backplanes.

For digital circuits, silicon will most likely beat it in power and cost even for very small designs.

Looks like it is not really a GPU ("Graphics Processing Unit"), but a video signal generator.

No, there is no series diode. There is an antiparallel diode to prevent solar cells from turning current into heat when they are shadowed.
kken··on Tell HN: China Is Entering Lockdown
I wonder how that compares to South Korea? They also managed to keep the number low for a long time. During Decomber 2021 there was a huge panic because suddenly there was a peak above 5000, but it subsided again.

Now with Omikron it appears that there is no limit anymore. Currently they have more than 350000 new cases per day, the highest in any country.

kken··on Intel to Acquire Tower Semiconductor for $5.4B
>f becoming a big player in the semiconductor industry in the next decade

Did you mean

"a big player in the semiconductor _foundry_ industry in the next decade" ?

Intel has been the biggest semi player for most years during the last three decades.

kken··on Controlling RGB LEDs with only powerlines: Anatomy of a Christmas light string
I think it has never been easier to enter electronics (especially embedded stuff) than it is now. You can get a starter set including RPI/Arduino/Breakboard/Components for less than $100. Also, with a breadboard no soldering iron is needed.

Try chemistry, mining, process engineering or even mechanical engineering in comparison?

In one of the later chapters he introduces an updated NE555 design.

I don't know, just apply?

Obviously it is important to get hands on experience even as an undergrad. Ideally you can do that at your university, otherwise there are plenty of opportunities for internships. At least in Europe I had absolutely no problem finding one. It can't hurt to also look for second tier companies.

kken··on Decap of a tiny chip that plays Christmas songs
Nah, sorry that is just not true.

Try this one for the US: https://sunypoly.edu/research/albany-nanotech-complex.html

Or this one for Europe: https://www.imec-int.com/en

Both world-leading semiconductor technology research institutes (coincidentally both got the first EUV-tools) with plenty of students.

kken··on The World’s Largest Computer Chip
I may be mistaken, but Teslas Dojo chip still seems to be relatively small. They can connect many of them into a 2D fabric, though.

Cerebras still seems to have an advantage here, because they can use on-chip interconnects, which potentially allows higher bandwidth between the tiles.

kken··on Second IC
It's a pretty clever process as some of the more critical steps (gate oxide, poly deposition) are done elsewhere. This allows for very stable transistors without a lot of Vth shift. I also like his use of resits for the ILD.

Maybe it would be possible to replace some of the more agreessive acids used for poly and Al etch with KOH and lowly concentrated HF.

Also, one could also use alloy doping with aluminium to create the junctions and skip the need for a high temperature diffusion. But that would probably not result in a 10µm process and present yield issues...

kken··on BioNTech alone could lift German economy by 0.5% this year
Interesting blog article, but it seems to represent the supply chain before the Mainz facility went into operation?

I read somewhere* that original materials and the process that is being used by Croda is from a small Austrian company:

https://www.polymun.com/liposomes/reference-projects/

Maybe they have also licensed their process elsewhere?

kken··on TSMC eyes Germany as possible location for first Europe chip plant
Actually there is a lot of current semi activity in Dresden. It's the biggest cluster in Europe.

Notable fabs in Dresden: Globalfoundries, Infineon, Bosch (recently opened), X-Fab, First Sensor, Plastic Logic (now defunct). May be noteworthy that some of these fabs are among the semi fabs with the highest degree of automotation world wide.

Add to this many bigger and smaller suppliers, universities, reasearch institutes and so on.

https://www.silicon-saxony.de/nc/en/members/sorted-by-alphab...

There are also plenty of Fabs in other parts of Germany: Infineon, Bosch, Nexperia, TDK, Osram, TI, X-Fab, Vishay, Elmos and some I forgot probably.

There are also many design companies. Especially noteworthy is probably Apples modem team that keep growing and growing...

CERN certainly stimulates some semi research, but it is rather specialized.

kken··on Intel in talks to buy GlobalFoundries for about $30B
Well, Globalfoundries was exactly in the same situation directly after they were spun off from AMD and they bought Chartered Semiconductors to get foundry knowledge into their company. They also hired a lot of ex-freescale and ex-IBM people.

kken··on The inventor of the black box was told to drop the idea
This inventor is probably joined by many others before him that had the same idea, were shrugged off and did not have the tenacity to follow up despite that. Another example for what is common wisdom: Execution is everything.

The myth of the inventor-founder is something from the industrual age. Interesting how it still persists.
