kjsthree··on Go east from Seattle
North of the contiguous US but certainly not north of the continental US.

/pedantry

kjsthree··on Ruby 3.3
I also like to double check these kind of numbers and basically agree with your take. Although, I like to use a 28 day month and an 8-10 hour day rather than assuming smooth traffic over 24 hours. Even with all that, 1/2 a billion is well under 50 req/sec which is not a big deal for the rendering servers. All that traffic coming together on a database server might be a bottleneck though.
kjsthree··on Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
I feel seen!

Just over 200k is my high-score and I've yet to witness the 6144 card. Still out here trying though!

kjsthree··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
This is essentially what I've done. The TV has never been connected to the Internet and my Apple TV drives everything. I would still have payed 2x to support a good dumb TV project and would love to do so in the future.
kjsthree··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Keep us updated. I'd likely pay 2x what I payed for my LG C2 for a "dumb" version. Even if just to support such a project.
kjsthree··on November 2022 Progress Report
Also very excited about the progress Asahi is making. I did technically live your dream though in 2003 with YDL on my G3 iBook. It was… ok.
kjsthree··on The Internet origin story you know is wrong
The story I learned from Where Wizards Stay Up Late and The Dream Machine is wrong?
kjsthree··on AMD Xilinx Kria KR260 Robotics Kit
This dev board is primarily focused on showcasing an FPGA which is a different animal compared to a Pi and other small computing platforms. Selling these Xilinx FPGAs for your PCB manufacturing is the thing they’re prepared to do at scale.
kjsthree··on A dev's thoughts on developer productivity
I call this the “thin thread” and agree that it’s best to get that in place fast and hacky. Then refine and bolster from there.
kjsthree··on Web3 is expensive P2P
Not sure if you’ve heard but, over the last two years, some of the most polished and well-produced voices on NPR were literally coming from someone under a blanket in a closet. I’m not sure how much web3 is happening in closets but I wouldn’t bet on zero.
kjsthree··on How and why Daily is using Rust for our WebRTC APIs
The question still stands though. Does each individual worker have its own bridge to JS? If so it’s just a constant race condition between them.

Actually LOL’d!

kjsthree··on The Animal Is Tired
Wait, what’s this about raw spinach?
kjsthree··on Ask HN: Where do you put DIY servers?
Or maybe better said, there’s no way that box could feed the world over his home connection.
kjsthree··on Ask HN: Where do you put DIY servers?
What does that guy actually do with the box then? There’s no way his home internet connection could keep it fed. I’m trying to imagine local uses for all that I/O.
kjsthree··on Vaccines Are the Safest Medical Procedure We Have. Make Your Wager Wisely
Every time I see “champing at the bit”, I consider it a victory for humanity. People correctly assessing vaccine risk would just be gravy.
kjsthree··on The Mayron Cole Piano Method is now free
Well, now I know about 3Blue1Brown so thanks for that!
kjsthree··on Cloudflare working on Cloudflare Pages, for deploying and hosting JAMstack
Wow, thanks for that! Had no idea.
kjsthree··on Email a Dumpster Fire
Oh my god, the flashbacks!

Circa 2005 doing client work during summers off of uni in this newfangled “Ruby on Rails” (v0.8.x). I was new to all of it. Coming from Flash/Flex/AS and jumping both feet into Ruby, Rails, JS via Script.aculo.us! Great times!

kjsthree··on Laser-Guided Lightning May Help Prevent Wildfires
Yeah, you might have something there.
kjsthree··on Laser-Guided Lightning May Help Prevent Wildfires
It's certainly possible but, as you say, you'd need tie/attach the laser to whatever of your neighbor's property that you want to effect. You can't do this from afar because the lightning strike is coming toward the laser emitter.

Expect your door to get knocked in soon thereafter.

kjsthree··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
Agree wholeheartedly!

Void my warranty, boot with a scary splash screen, whatever, but don’t lock me out of the thing I ostensibly own. Or, maybe change the “buy” button to a “license to use” button in your store.

kjsthree··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
Yes, that is almost certainly the case. They didn’t mention clock speed at all though so we’ll have to wait for real-world tests.
kjsthree··on Ruby on Rails in a week
Haha! That’s the one that immediately came to mind. What a dumpster fire.
kjsthree··on US grid-battery costs dropped 70% over 3 years
> Temperature ranges aren't as wide.

I thought people were mounting these out in the garage.

For me that would be an 80° delta between the highest summer highs and the lowest winter low. The delta in places like Wyoming would be a lot more.

kjsthree··on Hacktoberfest Is Now Opt-In
I imagine a sea of furrowed brows aimed at those showing up to conferences wearing a Hacktoberfest shirt.
kjsthree··on Ethereum Is a Dark Forest
Agreed, somehow bots are able to jump the queue but there’s no description of how or why that’s possible. Why would the bot transaction be given higher priority than the submitted transaction?
