kjsthree··on Hugelkultur: Raised Garden Beds
Definitely do whatever you want with your land but thought I’d throw in my two cents on moles.

I gave up worrying about them after learning about all the good they do (aerating, eating grubs that turn into beetles that do harm my garden, etc). Turns out they don’t bother me at all. I live out in the woods though and don’t have a showy lawn.

kjsthree··on Tell HN: Call Mom
3—5 calls per year seems great. I don’t feel detached. Or maybe I am and that’s how I like it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Still love my mom though. Will call her in a bit.

kjsthree··on Ask HN: Is your company sticking to on-premise servers? Why?
This! I very much want to hear about how you get your bandwidth.
kjsthree··on Microsoft is infesting Windows 10 with annoying ads (2017)
Manjaro takes the edge off Arch. After having tended my Arch garden for a year or so (very grateful for all the learning) I’m happy with the balance of some handholding without losing the AUR.
kjsthree··on Safety Meeting
I’m just glad there are diesel mechanics contributing on HN.
kjsthree··on HTTPie – A user-friendly CLI HTTP client
Writing by default is logically followed by stderr? I just don’t follow.

Asking a program for info and then getting that info on stderr seems really bizarre to me.

Is this some historical UNIXism?

kjsthree··on HTTPie – A user-friendly CLI HTTP client
> Like curl but unlike httpie, headers are written on stderr instead of stdout.

What’s the thinking here? If I ask for the headers, wouldn’t I want that on stdout?

kjsthree··on The Maturing of QUIC
> ...chatter within the community made it clear that many organizations were chomping at the bit to start implementing as soon as the IETF...

It’s “champing at the bit”, not “chomping at the bit”

/internet pedantry

Fantastic article though and I’m very interested in the future of QUIC/HTTP3.

kjsthree··on Why is modern web development so complicated?
> Software is the only industry where you are asked to build systems that have never been built before but that are more complex than anything ever built in the history of "mature industries"

I have a feeling that some SpaceX engineers would have something to say about this after one of their rockets lands on a floating barge.

kjsthree··on Show HN: Stretch – A high-performance cross-platform layout engine in Rust
As someone else who knows nothing about how layout engines work, kudos to this response. I understand time and attention don’t scale well and I hope you don’t get overwhelmed but this kind of attitude in open source is the greatest.
kjsthree··on Sketch raises $20M in Series A funding
> Unlike Sketch, Figma runs in the browser which means you can use it on Windows and Mac

And Linux. And BSDs. And Plan9? And Haiku? Probably ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Arch user here and so appreciative that Figma exists.

kjsthree··on How hard is it to have a conversation on Twitter? So hard even the CEO can’t
^ nailed it
kjsthree··on Mozilla hit with takedown request for anti-paywall addons
^ THIS! I don’t see how the situation is in any way more complicated. Real-world analogies can get pretty squirrelly but it would be quite literally like the following.

Man standing on the sidewalk outside a store yells into the store at the shopkeeper “hey there, can I have some free fish?”

Shopkeeper yells back “sure!” and tosses a fish to the man on the sidewalk.

Add more yelling back and forth for TLS handshake.

At this point, the man on the sidewalk can do whatever he wants with the fish. It was freely given.

kjsthree··on Apple Is Planning a New Low-Cost MacBook, Pro-Focused Mac Mini
Yes, a screen’s HDMI can go to USB-C… with a dongle. Am I guaranteed the upstairs conference room will have one? Nope, better pack the dongle. USB drives, USB headphone/mic adapter, the list goes on and on. I’m not saying it has to bother you but it does me.
kjsthree··on Apple Is Planning a New Low-Cost MacBook, Pro-Focused Mac Mini
Same here. At least for the moment I’m happily running Arch on an X1. Not that there aren’t tradeoffs but man, Apple has been killing me the last few years. I can’t do the dongle life.
kjsthree··on Show HN: Layoutit – An interactive CSS Grid generator
This looks great! Extra kudos for it working on mobile (iOS 11 anyway). I’m usually checking HN on my phone and these things rarely work there.
kjsthree··on Figma Platform
It’s a good example because that’s what they’re saying. With GitHub you’re not limited to editing through the web UI. With Figma you are. Something like Figma backed by data you control would be fine.
kjsthree··on Web application from scratch, part I
Or maybe "given an area of land rich in minerals… yada yada …grow a silicon ingot… yada yada …now you have a virtual DOM webapp. Congratulations, you now have the 'fullstack' merit badge!"
kjsthree··on Firefox is on a slippery slope
Yes I am. But I am a small minority.
kjsthree··on A startup founder and ex-Facebook engineer’s story of the BSD + Patents license
Exactly! I have yet to see a solid walkthrough of how my situation is made worse because of an explicit patent grant.

I believe the fear of a grant revocation also revoking the BSD copyright license has been thoroughly settled. If that were the case that would be an issue but FB themselves have put in writing that that is not the case.

kjsthree··on A startup founder and ex-Facebook engineer’s story of the BSD + Patents license
Yes, you're absolutely correct. So the takeaway would be not to bring software patent litigation to Facebook's door flippantly. A thing I'm absolutely in favor of.

I can't believe I'm defending Facebook though. A company who's data-mining practices completely creep me out. I definitely try to reduce the reach of their tentacles into my life but in this case I see nothing to take issue with.

kjsthree··on A startup founder and ex-Facebook engineer’s story of the BSD + Patents license
I'm not assuming they don't have any patents on React but I also have zero intention of wielding software patents so it's not something I'm concerned with.

You're correct though that if one does have aims to sue Facebook they should cease using Facebook led projects.

My main point is that the patent grant is nothing but gravy. Without it you have a plain Jane BSD license. Certainly not a worse situation.

kjsthree··on A startup founder and ex-Facebook engineer’s story of the BSD + Patents license
> As part of the patent grant, you’d have to stop using Facebook open source upon claiming patent infringement.

IANAL but I don't believe this is correct.

If I'm using React and I decide to sue Facebook for infringing some other software patents I hold, I lose the patent grant for any potential patents Facebook might hold concerning React. Which they could go after me with if they do indeed hold such patents. There's nothing proactively forcing me off React.

I just don't see anything but good from this BSD+patent grant situation. It lessens software patent litigation in general and lets me know I'm safe from Facebook suing me specially. It seems fantastic!

kjsthree··on Doomsday planning for less crazy folk
The Brave browser has a great reader mode.
kjsthree··on Async/Await will make code simpler
Let go and let god. :D
kjsthree··on UglifyJS 3 Released
You can handle es6+ with the harmony flag but if you're already using Babel is there any reason to use Uglify over Babili?

I believe Babili generates minified/mangled output directly from the Babel AST which would be way more performant during the dev cycle.

kjsthree··on Ask HN: Online Security Tips for Newbie Freedom Activists?
Reasons/links as to why no Telegram? Honestly curious.
kjsthree··on The Art of Pitching: How I Got Published in The Atlantic
Standing [slow clap] ovation! Especially that last paragraph!

Maybe you should be writing for the Atlantic.

kjsthree··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
No, you're right. Alas, my wish is fanciful. :(
kjsthree··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
I should start measuring the time I spend fishing around my cluttered desk looking for that stupid dongle because I'm now done with a Hangouts call on my laptop and would like to switch back to my phone to play a podcast. iPhone 7 will crush that metric! Oh wait, lower is better? Eph!

There's also that time that it was 2pm and I still hadn't had lunch. I ended a Hangouts call, yanked my headphones out of my mbp, cruised over to the elevator, and excitedly made my way to Eataly for a prime rib sandwich. Sat down with my sandy, pulled 1/8" jack toward base of phone… Eph again!

The experiences that end in me loathing Apple are building slowly and steadily.
