kjkjadksj··on Factories are just rooms
Certain industries such as film adjacent industries definitely remind me of what you are describing. Small scale, small shop, profound expertise, able to immediately work and iterate. And the way they solve healthcare is simple. They don’t offer health insurance benefits at all. Employees buy it for themselves from Covered California.
kjkjadksj··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
I never saw actual downward price pressure on unsold new physical games. At most they’d go for $45 instead of $60. Only at gamestop with the most ratty booger infested chewed by dog used copy would you see real deals. That or boomer parents selling off their kids childhood when they went off to college for pennies on the dollar, but I think going forward gen x parents are smart enough to check prevailing values on electronics, so that source of deals are gone too.

Discs are way more convenient. You can store how many multi hundred gb games on your internal storage before you have to start triaging. Also, want to play a game you haven’t played in a while after work? Sorry, 3 hour forced update.

In the old disc era you’d just pop in the disk and start playing in minutes. You could have as many disks as would fit in your house.

Oh no, you have to stand up and walk 10ft to put it in. What a great inconvenience.

Your library on steam is tied to you. When you die, it is gone. Your children or family using it is against terms of use.

kjkjadksj··on More evidence is consistent with possible ancient life on Mars (2025)
Some of the more out there UFO theories postulate on these lines. An idea that rather than say send an explorer of your own species to some planet with all the needed life support, you use genetic engineering to create a worker bee essentially, already tailored to perform whatever function under whatever environmental conditions are present at the target planet. You may even be able to build this species using genes already present at the host system in some reduced to essential components fashion like an engineered plasmid in the molecular biology lab. This would also double as camouflage keeping the worker bee genetics separate from genetics found in your own planet or star system, making them appear endogenous to the target planet instead.

Traditional red light cameras take a still frame and are triggered only during a red light violation.

The real eco hippies were fueling a 40 year old mercedes on fry oil. Powers that be want you to replace all sources of oil dependent product with another oil dependent product (after all, EVs depend on oil making plastic and grease a cheap commodity). They don’t want you to buy something they already sold to the unwashed masses decades ago. They want you to buy new thing. Never mind old thing still works.
kjkjadksj··on Dallas Fed: 30% of housing cost increase driven by unauthorized immigration [pdf]
If only they could develop housing! The issue is zoning creating the scarcity.
kjkjadksj··on Dallas Fed: 30% of housing cost increase driven by unauthorized immigration [pdf]
There is plenty of land for housing already. It is just constrained by zoning.
kjkjadksj··on The AirPods Effect
I only use them for zoom calls. Just what I had in the drawer with a microphone during covid and they have yet to break. I think the mic is better than the laptop mic since it is closer to the mouth. For any other audio I break out over ear monitors.
kjkjadksj··on Big Tech is stoking unrest in the UK. Why?
Prices are high from zoning preventing the market to build to meet demand.
kjkjadksj··on Dallas Fed: 30% of housing cost increase driven by unauthorized immigration [pdf]
Immigrants aren’t the ones restricting zoned capacity. That would be local government.
kjkjadksj··on Big Tech is stoking unrest in the UK. Why?
If only there were more customers to grow markets! Hmm I wonder how that could be done…
kjkjadksj··on Big Tech is stoking unrest in the UK. Why?
British people miss the fact that assimilation happens in the generation after the immigrant generation. Italian immigrants were looked down on in the US too. Too catholic, not speaking the language and not engaging in american culture practices. The next generation speaks fluent english and is scarcely different than any other american out of the school system.
kjkjadksj··on Big Tech is stoking unrest in the UK. Why?
If they are fed up with immigration they are stupid. “Gee we have declining birth rates and we want to deny this pool of labor that might correct course because they are brown.” The american empire was built on easy immigration. Turns out the tired and poor that we took in can build empires and win europe’s major wars for them.

kjkjadksj··on I hacked into the worst e-bike and fixed it [video]
8 speed parts that I use are dirt cheap and robust. Thicker chains, thicker cogs. Never broke a derailleur. Yes I park in racks. I looked on ebay and I can get another rear derailleur for like $20. And the mechanical advantages for gearing are so nice. I benefit from that every time I ride. Versus whatever fixie benefit comes from worst case scenario. If my bike was truly wrecked I’d just hop on a bus.
